hi and ok

so ive got some issues, power issues i think, if not i am sorry and mods please move to proper section

basically when i put everything back together when i press the power button all my fans turn about 1/4 and then stop like something is causing a short.

however when i look at my case i see no frayed wires or screws that would connect something to cause a short. im at a loss. when i take everything out and put it on cardbaord it boots. back in the case, 1/4 turn syndrome

parts
rocketfish case (rebranded lian li case)
850hx
5870
rampage 3 extreme
1600 dominator ram
930 i7

about to run a "test bench" again later tonight. will report back after i have done that, but in the mean time wanted to get this out there because this is starting to get really really annoying

edit
if there is anyone around 90808 that would like to meet up and help me out that would be sweet

If you're running everything fine from the motherboard box but not when you put everything into the case, it's probably the case that's causing the short.

You may need to put those paper washers in between the (back of the) motherboard and the screw-in board risers within the case.

i like that idea tiraides, would i pick those up at ace hardware or lowes or something? but if there was that possibility, wouldn't the case makers throw those in ?

If it runs fine on the bench, almost has to be a short. Look for standoffs that are not properly screwed down, ones that are extra, or ones that are missing. Try running the system with only the motherboard, processor, one stick of RAM and video. If that works, add things back into the case one at a time.

Of course, could be you found a haunted case kinda like my boss ran across a few years ago (actually a customers computer). The hardware refused to run in the case at all. Take everything out and lay it on the bench, no problems at all. Tried an entirely different set of hardware, and it also refused to run in that case. He never did solve the issue, and just put the customers hardware in another case.

i really really hope i dont have a haunted case. i modded it for water so its got the rads in already but i havent bothered hooking everything up because i just want to get back to having a real computer to use.

Oh, wait, did you drill holes in it? You may have metal shards left over from the mod that are shorting somewhere in the case. Try blowing the case out REALLY well with an air compressor if you havent done so already.

there are some holes drilled into it yes. ill go looking for my canned air and redo the bench. but at this moment i just have no will to move it. i think after dinner seems like a good time to start working. i remember when putting together a pc took only like 30 minutes. i feel like i was putting this bad boy together for several hours :(

but if there was that possibility, wouldn't the case makers throw those in ?

Because it doesn't happen that often to warrant the small costs, which becomes pretty large in aggregate, to put those washers in. Although some cases do come with those washers.

yaa i went to ace and picked up 20 plastic washers.

and back from the bench
it boots, posts, dosent launch windows, but its because the sdd was from an older system, easy fix now that it powers on.

now to put it back together in the tower and hope its not haunted. also blew out the case, found a like 2 metal shavings, all gone
if the case is haunted, mountain mods case? probally the pinnacle because i dont care much for the box cases. thoughts?

Local mom-and-pop computer stores may have them, but I haven't tried looking for them at a hardware shop.

Some cases have them, but many don't. Sometimes, it's the luck of the draw.

turns out i kinda found found where my problem is, well kinda.
the issue resides when i hook up my 3 hdds and 1 ssd on the same cable.

and there we have it
a busted harddrive. how it happened is beyond me, but that is what is causing my system to not boot
stupid data drives ><

You may want to perform a repair installation, but only with your SSD connected to your computer.

That way, if another drive goes bad in the future, you won't have any boot-up issues.

At least you figured it out, and it wasnt something major like the motherboard. Good luck with the rest of the build!

yaa. im still stumped how a harddrive causes a short to prevent me from powering on
o well

yaaa now its time to tweek, its running a little slugish right now, but at least it works again
