New System Troubleshooting: Help :(

SelRahc said:
Well, the memory does the same thing in the other system. It fails memtest. So there may be a ram issue.

Also, the video glitching came back again....

EDIT: While i was typing this it just flickered real fast and reset, as if i changed resolutions.... bad... bad.. bad....

I'm at my witts end. I may just RMA the MB and the memory and say screw it. Hell I should just RMA the entire computer. I'm so over this.... :(

Were you grounded when you built this computer, because the more i read, the more it sounds like you weren't. See, if your mobo was bad, the other ram would have tested bad too. I'll bet that your video problem is either your psu or the vid card itself. Once again test your "bad" video card in your good system and see if you get the same thing, if you do, problem solved. If not then there are a few other things to try. But the card itself seems like the most likely culprit. Before you pull your card out, unplug any unneeded hardware/extras from your system so its only your mobo, ram and video, then boot into your bios. If the problem goes away, its your psu. If not, move the card over to the good computer. If it tests good there, then you know for sure its the mobo.

Once again test your PSU first, then move the card over.

I could have explained this alot better if i wasn't so tired, but i thikn you get the point.

Good luck testing.

Given the amount of gear you bought, and the probability of finicky comptuer equipment, I would have been VERY surprised if everything worked perfectly out of the box.

I would RMA the mobo AND the ram, since the video errors are likely caused by a mobo fault. Makes me wonder if the mobo messed up the ram. Is this possible, anyone?

Hang in there, I ran into a rough spot getting a new psu for a Tyan 2462. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a ges psu, when you don't know you need one? Be happy you have people here with suggestions. Imagine how much worse it would be if you couldn't get online and ask, or didn't know of a place where you could ask! I'm grateful you're doing this, it gives the everyday guy's review of gear we're all looking at.

Good luck!

I wouldn't RMA a damn thing untill i knew what the problem(s) are/were. What i'm telling him todo is the same thing we do in the shop. Its basic troubleshooting 101. Simplify your problem to the easiest form and test it, and don't include other variables when they aren't needed.

EDIT: I hit enter in the wrong area and it post as I was typing. Real post is below.

EDIT: Sorry I hit post on accident before I was done typing the message. Ignore my last post please. Wasn't slapping a dead fish, sorry...... >.<;

Just so people know, I wasn't going to RMA until I was fairly sure I knew what the problem was. ;) Also, I have an antistatic wrist strap I use.

Anyways, so my system is having the problems, my wifes identical system is not. So here is what I have done:

MEMORY:

My memory in my system= Errors
Her memory in my system= No Errors
My memory in her system= Errors
Her memory in her system= No Errors

So I tend to think the memory may have a problem, wouldn't you think?

POWER:

Power in the MB Bios shows stable rails.
Power in Motherboard Monitor 5 also shows stable rails. So I don't think I have a power issue.

VIDEO FLICKERING:

The more I watched the problem / flickers on the monitor, the more I thought it may be a monitor problem. I took my wifes monitor and set it next to mine. When I plugged hers in, no flickers. I immediately change to my monitor and it flickers again. I took my monitor and hooked it to her system and got flickers.

So I started playing with the cabling. When I bend the cable one way, the flickers are real bad, and another way it stops alltogether. So I think I found the flickering culperate. Looks like my monitor cable is messed up :( It's not too old a monitor but it has taken alota beatings and several moves, so I wouldnt doubt it. I guess all the connecting and disconnecting for all this testing finally just took it's toll... and the timing was just perfect... wouldn't you say?

A rubberband on the cable keeping it bent the right way to prevent flickers. I just need it to hold out till next year when the faster flat pannels come out ;) So that eliminated the flickering problem as being non-related to the issue at hand.

So that's that. I am thinking that I'll RMA the memory and go from there. Is it possible the MB made the memory bad? That could be I guess... Those are the two culperates I was looking at. But from the above, I'm going back to where I thought the problem was in the first place.... I think the memory is the source of my problems.

How's that sound.....

Previous post, ignored.

Memory = BAD
Monitor cable = BAD
Problems solved.

And to answer your question, it is possable that your mobo made your memory go bad, albeit highly unlikely. Because if that was the case, it prolly would have taken your Vcard with it as well. There are a number of factors that can make memory go bad, i could prolly fill the rest of this page with them. RMA your memory back to corsair. What kind of monitor do you have, because you may be able to do a drop replacement on the cord. Sounds like you have a broken wire internal to the cord, also check and make sure that no pins are bent on your connector. As part of troubleshooting, you when your system goes wonky, you always check the most recent changes first and work backwards. And by the sound of everything that was going on or the way you were explaining things, i didn't even think the monitor was a possablility. I'm sorry i didn't think to tell you that, but even the best of us miss things. At least we know now. Congrats on figuring out your first major computer AFU problem. Next time we'll tackle troubleshooting a dead cockroach behind the mobo, lol, you don't even want to know what problems arise when you get dead bugs behind the mobo. :)

Dead roach behinf the MB? Haha. Gives a new meaning to computer bug I guess....

I didn't even THINK it was the monitor at first. It was easy for me to be in denial... I like my 19" Sony Trinitron. :( It's definately the cable though. Pins are ok. Once I found the break point and bent it right, I just twist tied it in place... I can't imagin having the cables shorting out inside there is too good for the system... I hope I can replace the cable itself...... Otherwise I'll hafta solder.... I'm not getting gid of my monitor just cause of the cable... I like my trini!

Anywhosey... RMA the memory on monday I will. Crucial will crossship so all should be good in the world next week.... I hope.

Thanks for all the help guys & gals.

Glad to hear you solved your probs, and yea, monitors don't tend to ship with the most durable cables out there (even the better brand ones)... it's really bad when the cable is a permanent part (or semi-permanent anyway). I've got a similar issue with a SyncMaster 955DF here, two of them in the house and the newest one (which ironically hasn't been shipped across the US twice like the oldest one has, due to college) has developed a nasty focus problem...

Small text is gonna be unreadable soon if it gets worse and I can't seem to find where exactly on the cable is the damage (can't replace it either). Pretty certain it's the cable though, due to the squishing and shifting it's had at it's current cramped location.

Almost makes me wish I paid for extended warranties more often, almost... I need to be more like my cousin, pay for them always but then be aggresive about them. Soon as it's about to expire take advantage of it even if it's for something relatively minor, heh. 'Course it helps if you work at the place where you're returning the stuff.

Ya. Well my monitor is a few years old. I don't know if the cable is easily swappable or not. I'll take a look inside it later on and see. If I can solder a new cable on I'll do that. I just want it to last alittle while longer... I want a flat pannel.... just not quite yet hehe.

Just be very very careful in there, there is enough juice in that monitor to kill you. Do some research before you attempt going in.

When I first got my comp up and running, it rebooted a couple of minutes after booting to Windows. I checked all connections and such but came up empty handed. I decided to try on last thing, I swapped the Neopower 480 that I had just bought with the Antec 350 watt PS that came with case and it stopped rebooting! So I RMA'd the Neopwer 480 for another one and since I installed it I haven't had any problems so far with the new Neopower newegg sent me. I think because it's a new product they havent't worked all the bugs out yet so there are some lemons out there. The Neopower my brother got works fine. I did notice on the dud Neopwer I had that the power switch on the back of the PSU didn't work right. Hope this helps

Nate
