New system problem

Okay so here is my problem. My computer powers on but sometimes there is no image being put through the dvi, sometimes it does.

When there is information being transfered to the screen the fan on the video card is running at normal speeds. When there is no information being transfered the fan is on maximum speed. (Really distinct audio difference... much noisier)

I just got back my motherboard from an RMA so I don't know about the stability of it yet... it came with a beta bios. (Although I did downgrade to a stable bios) The video card is brand new.

I don't think it'd be a memory problem or a video card problem because to my understanding, if those were the issue, I wouldn't be able to play games right? I played a couple hours in TF2, Crysis, HL2:E2, MOHA... everything was fine.

What do you guys think it could be?

Edit: Specs are in the sig

what was wrong with your motherboard that it had to be rma'd?

Also i remember seeing something in another forum possibly about the Powersupply you have not working good with some video cards.

How long have you had the system?

I killed the bios and I got a replacement motherboard.

This system is only a few months, like 3 months, with a FRESH Vista installation... and the card is brand new.

The system powers on and everything, hard drives spinning, optical drive blinking, fans whirling.... I think I got a DOA replacement motherboard....

But I need to hear some opinions about this... because I don't hear beeps from the mobo or anything.

I mean if it was only the video card that was funky and just strictly being a dick and not producing an image, I should hear windows start up right?

Not necessarily, if it doesnt initialize the video it wont load into windows.

And if everything was working fine until your bios went to hell then there is a chance that you did get a bad board.

Do you have another computer you can test your card in?

Well I seemed to have found the culprit.....

It's blurry but those who own a P5K-E Wifi or whatever Asus motherboard uses this thing... it was the one that kept my computer from posting. THAT and the other switches other than the power.

Although it doesn't power on sometimes... it's sorta fixed...

More a bit later...

Update: Oddly enough when it enters that weird error where it won't post, it resets itself and begins posting.

Although the computer works afterwards, this kind of odd crap is making me pull my hair out trying to figure out what the hell is wrong.

Stressing the video card doesn't seem to affect the computer. No crashes or artifacts. I am guessing this rules out the video card yes?

I used Everest to stress the CPU for a while... I didn't see crashes or anything.

What programs do you guys recommend to test?

Brought it to the store because it wouldn't post... just a black screen with everything running. Hopefully I'll get an answer later tonight when I go pick it up.

Well since I can't do this troubleshooting myself because of exams I had to let the store do it. And I just called the store and the tech guy told me the system works outside of the case but not inside... bizarre. Anyone know what it could possibly be?

That's the double booting issue and it's actually a common thing with the P35 chipset. The double booting does not cause any problems but it is an annoyance. It can be fixed sometimes by a BIOS update.

As for not working inside of a case, that means that something inside the case or mobo is shorting out the mobo. Maybe a loose screw, over tightening of the mobo screws, weird placement of the screw/standoffs etc.

See the problem here is that the motherboard worked fine before I completely wiped the bios to hell. Even after I updated the bios on the new motherboard to the bios in the cd it did that. And the double booting thing only happened that one time.

Hopefully the guy at the store will figure out what it is... because I can't and really don't want to mess around with it since I have too many things to do already at school.

OMG I AM SO ANGRY!!!

I go in today because they tell me they fixed my computer. They charge me 50 bucks to pick it up because the guy somehow figured out the problem. Instead of using screwing all the screws to hold down the motherboard he only used 4 screws because THAT was causing the non-posting problem.

I bring it to school and borrow some of the I.T. guys equipment to power on my machine.... NO POST!!! I tried for several hours and still nothing.

I bring it back and ask them to solve the problem or refund my money. They tell me they'll fix it for me because it isn't something common to them that a customer had to come back to refix the machine.

GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT!!!!

He pulls out some ram and my video card.... and you know what he does with his fingers? He rubs the gold contacts with his fingers. EVEN I know that is NOT a good thing.

I saw this on the way out of the store by the way. ( girlfriend was rushing me to go somewhere.... )

I have to go back to get my stuff back and demand a fucking refund. And if there is damage to the equipment money from that too.

Does anyone know if theres a quick way to tell if the ram or the video card would be damaged from this? And can I just wipe the grease off with some special cleaner?

Got it back today and it boots outside the case but not when things are inside the case. I booted the computer when it was on a cardboard box with just the video card, cpu and memory installed.

The technician said that the video card, the cpu and the memory were all fine. What can be the issue???

I've never heard of anyone using plastic standoffs before. Dunno if those kind of standoffs can handle a mobo.

Are you sure that the power button on your case is still working? Or are you using the power button from your case to start up your PC outside of the case?

With the mobo back in case, make sure you do NOT overscrew the mobo to the case. Make sure that no other part of your case, besides the standoffs, are touching the back of the mobo

The last time this happened to me, I just ended up replacing the whole damn case.

I just simply turned on the computer by using a screw driver to you know... the thing with the pins. haha

Nothing but the pins are touching the motherboard... I made sure of it...

Honest to god right now I am contemplating buying a new case and selling this cooler master 690 case...

And for the plastic standoffs... I figure its plastic, it shouldn't carry any kind of static left from the case to the board right?

spoke too soon... only boots up sometimes... probably some weird static problem.. anybody else have any ideas?

Weird. Pick up a cheap case from your local PC store and put your PC in there. If it boots every single time, then your case is the problem. If it doesn't, it might be your mobo.

Thanks Danny... I tried throwing everything in a spare case I had and it still does the same thing.

SOOOO I went over to my friends house with EVERYTHING and tried it all on my friends mobo and guess what? Boots every time. I have concluded that the mobo I got back from an RMA is a dud and now I am ultra pissed that I have to go back to the store, have them rma it again, and play the waiting game... or hungry hungry hippos. :(

Been so long... waited for so long without my computer...:(
Motherboard is still being repaired/replaced and the calling the store that handled this for me said that it's already being rushed yet the estimated arrival time is going to be after the 27th...
So... angry...
