Ive had my system for a while and im lookin to upgrade. Ive had a viewsonic pf790 monitor for like 6 years and its been great to me. My GF is buying me a dell 2407 24 inch LCD monitor for xmas, so i want to make a new rig with it. My current system is

Asus K8V-X
Athlon 64 3400
1GB Generic Ram
radeon x850 Pro (AGP)
WD Raptor 72 gig
SB Audigy Sound Card

I pretty much just play WoW and and BF2. I want to be able to run them especially WoW, on the highest settings/resolution with that monitor. From what ive been reading it seems intels CPUs have taken the upper hand recently in terms of performance. Ive never really been into Ocing much but im going to do it with this rig. I want some opinions on SLI with its performance or down the road longevity . I am doing this now cause of black friday being this week i may find some deals, but this is what ive come up with.

EVGA 680i Mobo or Asus P5W
Intel 6300 CPU
Undecided on RAM but plan to get 2GB
Undecided on video if im going SLI or non SLI
Keeping current Raptor and adding another 200gb HD for storage
Keeping current Sound Card
As well a new case and a hefty name brand PSU

I went with these mobos cuz i want to be able to upgrade to a quad core when the prices drop. This CPU is lower priced and seems like a good choice and has some potential for OCing. I just dont know if im better off going with SLI or non SLI. I know alot of new video cards are just around the corner. What mobo and other components would you recommend for me going from my current system? I want to be able to upgrade this platform when the newer vid cards and the intel quad cores prices drop. Will i notice a large increase in performance with my current system or am i wasting money? Your input is appreciated.
 
How much do you want to spend? 8800GTX is the best video card right now, but it will cost you.
 
Yes you will notice a huge increase in system performance.

Anyway, personally, I don't think SLI is worth the extra cost and hassle. Some games don't take full advantage of SLI and there have been a few cases where SLI actually hindered the performance games.

Before I suggest parts, what is your budget?
 
Sorry for not posting my budget but i dont want to pay over 500$ for one component. Example 800$ video card or 900$ CPU, cuz theyre just gonna drop in half after a month or two usually. In a nutshell im lookin to get the latest and greatest thats not over 500$ per component. If my current video card wasnt AGP id stick with it and wait for the new radeons to come out hoping for a price drop on the 8800's. I went with the 6300 CPU for the time being until the quad cores come down.

Im problably gonna hold off on SLI and go with the Asus P5W. Hopefully this friday i can find some alright deals on this stuff.
 
For a new videocard I think it would be wise to wait a bit and buy one that supports Direct X 10, nvidia has the 8800 and ATI will be releasing theirs too in couple of months ... Also Quad cores are coming out soon by both AMD and Intel. Expect a considerable price drop for dual core cpu's and DX9 cards in Q1 2007.

7950GX2 would be next in line I guess, for nVIDIA. X1950XTX would be next in line for ATI.

What is your overall budget? The 8800GTS is $460 at Newegg, plus tax and shipping of course (if you live in cali, it'll come out to $505 shipped). Though, I wouldn't buy that card at that price. They should be dropping in jan because ATI will release the R600 based DX10 cards. I'd go with a 7900GT for $205, then sell that and upgrade in about 6 months when the 8900GTS comes out (if its even called that). If you'd rather not upgrade so quickly, go for the X1950XTX for around $400.

The P5W is the same price as the 680i SLI board... if you want crossfire, go with the P5W DH. If you want SLI, go with the 680i SLI board. I think you'll see some improvement with SLI/Crossfire, but I still don't think its worth the price premium ($250 mobo + 2x$400 vidcards for 30% performance gain?). I'd rather get a $130 mobo and $400 vidcard. It should handle your 24" fine.
 
The Gigabyte DS3 or Foxconn. If you want an Asus, the P5B-E or Deluxe. Though, going with one of those means no possibility of SLI without buying a new board. SLI mainly helps with higher resolutions... and in your case, there may be a point in time in the future when SLI would be worth it. Though, $260 for any mobo is overpriced, imho. I'd wait for the 650SLI boards, hehe... or at least until more nF 600 series boards come out to give that eVGA some competition (which will hopefully lower the prices).
