I am planning to assemble a system to operate a scientific instrument in a chemistry lab. This would run almost 24/7 for long periods. The instrument will be connected to the PC via LAN (2+ LAN ports are preferred). Also, it should be a VERY solid system - that is, MUST run flawlessly during experiments - PC will collect data real time and it will also control the instrument. Intel platform is preferred (according to instrument mfg).

No overclocking. No OS required. Already have Win 7 license (Enterprise).

Here is what I thought of:

Is there any way I could significantly reduce the total cost while staying within comparable performance? The ideal budget is around $700, but $850 is affordable.

Why is a dedicated video card needed?
Why that overly expensive and poor choice of a mobo? I.e what features does it have that you absolutely need in a motherboard?
Also, do you really need a 21.5" monitor? Is there a minimum size or resolution needed for this usage?

I thought of the MB. None of the others I looked at (Intel P45 or P55) seemed to have good reviews. Can you suggest a better, cheaper option? I used Intel boards (with on-board video) for such purposes in the past, but they seem to give troubles after 1 year or so.
 
Yes, I like to have a large monitor - analyzing data involves large spreadsheets and charts.

I know you've had problems with Intel in the past but in this case, Intel is really the beter option:
$95 - Intel BOXDH55HC LGA 1156 Intel H55 HDMI ATX Intel Motherboard

The above Intel mobo has two NICs, one of which is an Intel NIC. Intel NICs are far far faster and of better quality than many other NICs out there. Plus you can use the onboard video which saves additional money.

A simple mobo swap and now you've saved $145 right there. But a few more changes are needed:
- That Corsair 650TX is slightly overpriced and pretty much really overkill for your needs. I recommend this PSU instead:
$45 - Antec NEO ECO 400C 400W PSU

Though if you want to do complete overkill, then I recommend this PSU instead:
$80 - Antec Truepower New TP-650 650W PSU

- For $10 more, you can get slightly larger sized Monitor:
$160 - Acer V233HAJbd Black 23" Widescreen LCD Monitor

1920x1080 is slightly easier to read on a 23" than a 21.5" monitor

I think you should consider this type of setup as oppose to a desktop cpu build. Intel Xeon cpus are designed and spec'd to be ideal cpus to run 24/7. Also, should consider enterprise class harddrives for 24/7 operation with ECC (Error Check Correction) memory modules.

This is what I was thinking. The Enterprise HDD consider something like the Seagate SV35.5 ST35004 10SV 500GB HDD for $49.99 as the primary drive and the Western Digital AV-GP WD15EVDS 1.5TB for $79.99 as storage. These would be ideal for collecting real time data over long periods.

We normally use Western Digital RE3/RE4 enterprise HDD in our servers but, it's going to cost more though. Heh, but I must say despite their Enterprise claim, 24/7 operation etc etc, they are prone to failure.
