New System Build Recommendations

Hey guys, could use some help here from the hard crowd. I know most of you probably are more up to date on what's coming down the road in the near future, and I've been putting off the build for a while now, because there's always something "right down the road" and I don't have the cash to upgrade every year, more like every 5 -6 years, though it's been longer than that this time.

I'm coming from an old quad core2 , 8gb ram, which still serves me well for MOST of what I do. It's the stuff it doesn't do well that's driving me to upgrade.

I know most anything will be a huge upgrade in performance, but that doesn't mean I want to settle for last year's tech either. I've got a single ATI 6770, three monitors, 1 standard hd res and two 1900x1200. I've got two samsung evo 840 250g system disks and a 1 terabyte x (2x1 tb) raid 1 external esata, and a Rosewill 80 Plus 630w power supply.

My concentration is on productivity work, I constantly have many programs and many windows open, with lots of input i/o over network and drive to drive.

My ATI shows no weaknesses with 2d stuff, and even powers my 3 monitors just fine for the occasional gaming experience. Obviously I'm not cranking settings to the highest nor playing the latest games, because I'm not a big gamer. I wouldn't mind being able to slap another cheap 6770 in there for some cross fire love, or maybe for future monitor upgrades (more monitors or higher resolution ). I know motherboards can be expensive but my gaming requirements are minimal, and not very concerned at all with overclocking cpu/gpu.

Where system leaves me wanting for more speed right now is when I'm encoding something like multiple flac to aac or bluray to mkv ( all of my stuff is legit, on physical medium), or when I'm using it to serve to another tv in the house through plex. Obviously there just is never enough speed for something like that, it can always be faster, but I'm several generations behind, and that kind of stuff is slooooooow

I'd like have as many of the "latest technologies" without having to wait more than 2-3 months as I've been putting off for a couple of years already. Right now I think is a good time with USB 3.1 , Nvme, etc. I've got 4 real cores now, would like to have at least 4 real cores, preferably more cores or same cores with 8 threads. 6 cores/12 threads would be awesome, but I also am not wanting a something that will heat my whole house and burn my wallet if the performance gap is not significant.

I've got a nice midtower case with 120mm fans waiting, it's been in my pile of parts for a while now.

Basically I need mb + ram + cpu + cooler ( or factory cooler) non-overclocked) . Looking in the $500-$1000 range, 16gb+ ram would be nice to have but 8gb would be fine for now if expansion slots available for 16+gb later

Optionally another used 6770 ($10? lol) for crossfire + more ports, or one of something faster if it's got plenty of monitor ports. two of my monitors are display port capable, one is dvi/vga but will probably be upgraded soon, and if I'm not mistaken display port can drive more than 1 each. My current card is a single slot with hdmi , dp, and dvi, which is a huge mess, but it fits in my current minitower.

Some spare pci-e slots for future expansion would be nice, but not anticipating a big need for that if usb 3.1 is on board :)

I'm on wired GB ethernet + 802.11n, right now but wouldn't mind 802.11ac x 3, and since lighting blew up my 802.11n asus router recently, it seems like a good time to upgrade :)

  • What I've got: case, sys ssd drives, bluray drive, case, 630w power supply, monitors.
  • What I need: cpu, mb , ram, ac wireless, usb 3.1, anything else that you might think of
that I might need to consider or forgot.

Thanks in advance for your help

What PSU do you have?
What case do you have?
Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
Will you be overclocking?

was being silly :) because I provided the relevant info in original ;)

-I'm in the usa, city / state not sure what the point of that is, I'm buying online anyway
-630w 80 plus Rosewill power supply
-Midtower case, not sure what make / mode, again, not really a concern it's got more than plenty of room for anything I will be doing
-Not concerned with overclocking

Actually you didn't. Otherwise, I wouldn't have to ask the questions. Here I'll show you why I asked those questions:
-I'm in the usa, city / state not sure what the point of that is, I'm buying online anyway
The point is to let us know whether or not you live near a Microcenter as that can save you quite a bit of money.
-630w 80 plus Rosewill power supply
Not specific enough. Specific model number please. I've seen too many times in this forum alone how people get their actual PSU brand and wattage wrong. Nor does "80 plus" really mean anything when it comes to the PSU quality. The model number clears up everything. In addition, it also tells me whether or not you actually have a good PSU and a general range of its age.
-Midtower case, not sure what make / mode, again, not really a concern it's got more than plenty of room for anything I will be doing
No offense but in my ten years in this subforum, one person's definition of "plenty of room" differs from what is objectively plenty of room. In addition, no point in getting new CPU and GPUs if the case can't provide adequate cooling. Again, I see plenty of examples of people over-estimating their case's cooling ability.
-Not concerned with overclocking
That one I'll give you.

I'm trying to cover all the bases here and make sure that we can all give you solid recommendations without having to waste our time.

Geez, never mind. Forget I asked. Thanks for your attempt.

He wasted all that time writing a story no one cares to read while ignoring the sticky that says start here with a list of pertinent questions. Super not surprised he said screw it.

I agree Dangman works really hard to keep everyone happy in this sub forum. Don't get snippy with him, I'd like him to stick around and continue answering my questions.:p :D ;)
