I have been a long time lurker on these forums and when I built my last system, I relied heavily on forum posts and reviews made here. My previous system has lasted me 10 years and although it has been in need of an upgrade for at least 5 of those, I felt that the money was well spent.

I had thought I was all set when I saw the ASUS Rampage IV Formula board but after reading the review of the LGA2011 processors, I was not as enthusiastic. I realize that there is never a "good" time to upgrade as there is always something better down the pipe, but I would not be opposed to waiting a month or two if there is something "game changing" 'round the corner.

I have never had a water cooled system and don't consider myself an extreme OC'er, rather I am looking to build a high end workstation that will also play games.

Intel is supposedly releasing their new Ivy bridge CPUs in the next 1-2 months. AMD is supposedly releasing their new GPUs in Januaru as well. Up to you if you want to wait.

Now that you stated the motherboard that you're planning to buy, that mobo is a Socket LGA 2011 mobo - but the LGA 2011 platform in general runs very hot to begin with, and if you try to make it run cooler than it currently does, its performance would have been slower than most of the quad-core LGA 1155 CPUs on the market. Currently, only two CPUs are available for LGA 2011 - a $600 i7-3930K and a $1,000 i7-3960X. Plus, LGA 2011 in general is seriously overpriced for what you get unless you do tons of heavy-duty video editing or if you're trying to fold.

By the way, the 22nm Ivy Bridge CPUs coming out early next year will be initially offered only in LGA 1155 (at that time, LGA 2011 CPUs will remain on 32nm for some time afterwards).
 
Would going with an LGA1155 socket board like the ASUS Maximus IV Extreme or similar be a good choice for a new system? It would be compatible with Ivy. Also, any recommendations on Mobos that may offer more? I am a huge fan of ASUS mobo's but would be willing to consider other manufacturers.

Really no difference between the 2600K and the 2700K, except the price, so you can save some money by just getting the 2600K instead. Likewise, that's a really expensive motherboard for a 1155 CPU - do you really need the extra stuff that board provides over the $200 P8Z68-V Pro? No point in buying memory faster than DDR3-1600, as there is no performance benefit to higher speed RAM.

RAM clocking doesn't matter much on sandy bridge, so just get a set of 4x8GB at 1333.

I was under the impression the board could do up to DDR3-2333. Are you guys saying that their is no discernable difference in speed? If not, wouldn't memory rated for higher than DDR3-1600 perform better and be able to be set to lower clock settings?

I see a lot of recommendations for the P8Z68-V Pro. Would the P8P67 PRO (REV 3.1) also be considered a good recommendation? I don't really need on-board graphics and I heard the SSD caching doesn't work so well.

I chose the 1kw due to it's excellent review and that it should give plenty of headroom.

I don't want to just "spend" money, rather I want to get a system that is going to not only serve me today, but years from now as well. I am particular to the ASUS ROG series, and sometimes I don't mind spending a bit more to get the best.

I am going to be pushing this system hard. I plan on running applications such as COMSOL as well as custom apps for molecular modelling and physics as well as DVD ripping (100's of movies) and as I mentioned, some games.

I guess what I am getting at is I want a hard core system and am not necessarily looking for best price/performance, rather best performance.

I'd stay away from the Asus P8P67 boards - they had a lot of problems with them when they came out, and I don't know if they've been fixed or not. The Z68 boards have a much better reputation - and since Z68 is basically P67+, there is no reason not to get a Z68 board except cost.

No noticeable difference in performance outside of synthetic benchmarks with RAM rated higher than DDR3 1600. Hell there's barely a difference at DDR3 1333 speeds. Nor is there a noticeable difference in performance with lower timings and such. So no matter what RAM you choose, it's still gonna feel the same as the low speed DDR3 1333 RAM in most real world applications and games.

I would love to reach 5GHz but I want a stable OC, so if 4.8 is as high as I can go with a stable OC, then that would be fine. Not looking for bragging rights, just performance and stability.

The ROG series are good. AFAIK, there aren't any big issues with them besides being expensive for little gain IMO. As I said earlier, the P8P67 PRO 3.1 hasn't been out long enough to show that it's completely free of all the issues that plauged the P8P67 PRO Rev 3.0 IMO.

I was looking at cases and since I want to water cool both the CPU/GPU, I have been thinking I would need a full tower like the 800D, but frankly, I don't like the idea of having to move my computer to the end of my desk. So after some searching, I found some really cool cube cases that would fit under my desk and should fit all the water cooling equipment as well.

What's your thougts on these?

Well IMO, those cube cases are pretty fugly and overly expensive for what they are. I just don't see the value those cases have compared to cheaper or similarly priced cases.

However, I will fully admit that I'm not an expert or that knowledgeable when it comes to water cooling. So not 100% sure on the viability of those cases for a water cooling setup.

Might want to ask over the Cases & Case Modding subforum or the Water Cooling subforum about those cases and water cooling.

I am going to water cool the CPU and GPU(s) but I am waiting to get the case to get an idea of how much room I have and where everything will go before making those purchases.

I opted for the Lian Li case because it fits under my desk unlike the Mountain Mods cases, looks good (to me) and seems to have plenty of room for everything

I went with the i7-2600k because honestly, 100MHz is not worth the additional $60.

I went with the ASUS Maximus because I am a slave to ASUS and the sheer awesomeness of this board :D

I may have to extend my budget a bit as I had not completely factored in things like monitors, keyboard and drives.

I would love to hear recommendations on the RAM. Seems to be a consensus that DDR-1600 is the most I have to get, so with that in mind, what would be a good choice if I wanted to go for the full 32GB and 16GB options as well.

I would like to continue this thread until I've completed purchasing components, at which point, I will create a build thread for keeping track of the next steps towards the build.
 
The overwhelming majority of people will probably tell you to get either Corsair or G.Skill ram, in particular, the vengeance, dominator, ripjaws/ripjaws X lines. Kingston is also a viable brand. Just make sure that the heat spreaders on whatever one you end up getting won't get in the way of other parts in your board, since some of these (I'm looking at you corsair vengeance) have some ridiculously tall heat spreaders.

If you want the full 32 GB, you'll need to get a 4x8GB kit, which'll set you back by approx. $200+ if i recall. For 16 gigs its much cheaper, the G.Skill ram is on sale for $35 a set, so get two sets for $70 and you're good to go.
 
If you decide on Kingston be sure to check the voltages - some of the HyperX modules are still 1.65V.

If there is anyone out there that actually owns the ASUS Maximus IV Extreme B3, I would be interested to know if there are 4 SATA6 and 4 SATA3 because in reviews, they show that, but in ASUS's documentation, it states there are only 2 SATA6.

Also, I may wish to go with a SSD Raid 5 as my OS/Programs drives with a Mech Raid 1 as my Backup/Storage drive. Is this mobo capable of that or do I need to invest in some PCIe2 raid controller cards?

The two extra SATA6 ports use a separate but onboard Marvell controller that does not support RAID.

Odd, because the manual states I can use the Marvell Raid controller to create a RAID 0 or 1 array.

If I wanted to go with a RAID 5 or 10, am I correct in assuming I would be forced to use the 4 3GB ports? Also, if I decided to do a RAID 1 instead, could I use the Intel RST and the 2 6GB ports?

AFAIK, you can create a RAID array that uses all the SATA ports that are powered by the Intel storage chip. As such, you can create a RAID array across the SATA 3.0GB/s and SATA 6.0Gb/s ports.

Go with 4x4GB imo. Costs $70 and I highly, HIGHLY doubt that you will use more than 16gb of RAM. Even in the next 5 years it's not going to happen.
 
Alright, so after hours of scouring the web and researching various products, I think I can safely add some more components to this build...

I went with 2 240mm radiators which should give me a heat dissipation of 600W which should be ample for the i7 and 2 GTX580's

I went with the Koolance RP-450X2 and the dual pumps because it should make for a clean install and dual pumps for redundancy.

I had an option to mount a rear HDD caddy, however I would have to sacrifice a 120mm fan with an 80mm fan. With this setup, I can mount all 4 drives in one 5.25 bay and they are air cooled. That would give me 1 5.25 bay to spare. I am still not dead set on a particular SSD yet however I think 120GB would be sufficient. I intend on RAID 1 for both sets of drives for redundancy.

I have toyed with mutiple different configurations inside this case, finally arriving on what I believe to be a good setup...

I will mount each of the RX240 rads in the lower front HDD bays. On the right hand array, I will mount the Koolance reservoir above the RX240 on that side leaving one available slot at the top for a controller like the Aquareo sometime in the future.

I will mount the Addonics Disk Array and a Blu-ray writer (tbd) above the left radiator leaving me one free bay for future expansion possibilities.

I will also populate the rear 3 120mm fan holes but cover the upper 2 80mm fan holes as they are blocked by the back of my desk (wood support). I am still unceratin whether I will have enough fans in this case or whether I should buy the top fan adapter and add two more 120mm fans there.

:D Yeah, the budget is definitely going to be raised. I have gotten approval from the boss (wife) so I should be good up to around $4k. After that, I will need to buy components at a slower pace.

May I ask why you went with the more expensive kit? You won't see any noticeable performance benefit.

I tried the 20% promo code but it told me it was not valid on the item, so I decided since the price difference was minimal, why not go with the 1866.

I must say, I am impressed with the quality. All aluminum construction. Nice snap when drive is pushed all the way in. I am going to replace the 40mm fans with even quieter ones. The ones it comes with are not noisy, but they can be heard even though they don't move that much air.

I am going to have to wait to order more components until my next check from work. Then, I can order the PSU, Hard drives, case fans (any good recommendations?) and possibly one of the GPU's

Keep in mind the Crucial M4 sale is limited time, so pick that up ASAP.

I don't think you'd need that X-1250 PSU, the X-1000 should be plenty for everything you have even if you SLI in the future. I'm running a 940 clock OCed 580 with a 4.5GHz Oced i7-2600k off of the X-750, and i'm no where near the upper range of the PSU.

Also, for case fans, I love GELID NanoFlux Bearing fans, I have two of them in my case, and they are extremely quiet even at high RPM. There are fans with lower dB ratings on Newegg, but an in person comparison has shown the GELID To be the highest CFM for least noise. Plus, they come with rubber mounts for the case, removing the noise from vibration entirely.
