I am looking to build a new computer mainly for photo and video editing....

my budget is $800...not including monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc...I have been out of the customer system build scene for a couple years since core2duo first came out...so I am not quite up to date on the hardware...I am hoping you can help me out.


I am looking at the i7 and at least 4gb of memory...

what else does the i7 compare to?


what would you recommend for a motherboard? I have always had good experience with Asus.

Which video card would you recommend?

It is preferred that the motherboard be future proof or expandable...so as many features as possible like USB3.0 would be nice, but within budget.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?

Total = $810 ($25 MIR = $785)

Socket LGA1156 is not "Futrue Proof" as Intel has previously announced there we be no 6-8 Core CPU's for that socket.
Gigabyte Mobo is the X58 version of the board It_Shiro mentioned. Includes USB3.0 and Sata 6gb\s
Lastly, 6GB of RAM versus 4GB or RAM. Slower clock speed, but you won't notice with the added benefit of Triple Channel bandwidth.

You say Socket LGA1156 is not future proof for 6-8 core CPUs. Which socket is future proof for upgrade?

The 1366 socket will have a 6-core i7 hopefully in March

For your usage, other i7's. :p AMD has no competition for Core i7's. ;)

If you can get the 920 for $200 at MC, or if you can't but have more money to spend, Torrent's build is good. Otherwise, shiro's build would still be good, especially if you have no plan to upgrade to a 6/8-core CPU within the next two yrs or so. If you plan to build a new system in 2-3yrs, then LGA1156 would be fine.
 
awesome, I think I will be looking into the 1366 socket, because I want my system to be future proof and easy to upgrade in the future to a 6 or 8 core cpu.


Now as far as a video card, do you think I will be ok with 1 or should I go for 2 videocards in SLI?

No reason whatsoever for you to use SLI considering your answer to question 1. So one video card will be fine.
 
If you have room in your budget, you could go with better video card. I agree with Danny Bui that for your purpose I don't think you would realize a performance boost that would justify the price.
