Alright here is the list and as far as the questions.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
It will strictly be a gaming system.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
~$800 not including shipping.
3) Where do you live?
Continental US
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
All but no monitor
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

It's for a friend who is going to be playing KOTOR3 when it is released not sure on monitor size; however, graphics are very important.

Nothing specific, possibly Crossfire if it can be done with budget, but from my knowledge I don't believe so.

For its capabilities, I think the motherboard is a bit too expensive. That Asus board only allows Crossfire in an imbalanced x16/x4 configuration. Plus, you're also paying for onboard graphics that you likely will never use given that you're building a gaming system.

If you're going to be using just a single HD 5770, I'd recommend a DDR3 motherboard that uses an AMD 770 chipset that does not have onboard graphics support (it should be significantly less expensive than the 785G-based motherboard that you're planning to get). Otherwise, if you want to run two higher-end cards in CrossFire, I'd recommend a DDR3 motherboard using an AMD 790FX chipset or wait for a motherboard based on the new 890FX chipset.

As for the hard drive, I'd recommend ditching the 640GB WD Blue in favor of the slightly smaller 500GB model. Newer production models of the 500GB are confirmed to be of a single-platter design while the 640GB model still uses two 320GB platters.

And the 750W HX-series PSU is overkill unless you are going to overclock the 955BE to rather insane levels. If on the other hand you're going to stick with stock speed and a single GPU, you might not even need a 650W PSU.

Thanks for the quick response Eagle as far as the motherboard, I don't know AMD motherboards. I have been out of the loop for a few months.

Could you maybe pick a motherboard out for me?
 
Totally concur with E4g1e. I'd get this mobo:
$90 - Gigabyte GA-770TA-UD3 AM3 AMD 770 Motherboard

HDD wise, this one:
$56 - Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

And if you really want a modular PSU, then I recommend this one:
$100 - XFX P1-650X-CAG9 650W Modular PSU

The above changes should free up enough cash for the HD 5830 which has finally reached a price point where I can start recommending it:
$230 - XFX HD-583X-ZNFV Radeon HD 5830 1GB PCI-E Video Card

Unless you lived pretty close to a Microcenter or planned on a low power non-gaming HTPC, for a gaming PC for $800, your best bet would be AMD.
 
Cooler Master has some good deals on cheap refurbished cases.

Also, Microcenter has a great deal on a 965 with free ASUS motherboard. It isn't the bees-knees motherboard, but it saves you enough to get you into 5850 territory :)

I wouldn't recommend this, seeing that the motherboard accepts only DDR2 memory. In fact, I would not recommend an all-new build with DDR2 memory since DDR2 memory prices will continue to increase for the foreseeable future while DDR3 prices will remain relatively flat. And right now DDR2 memory is as expensive per GB as DDR3 memory.

That's definitely a good point. Personally, I'd rather have a better gpu than ddr3 over ddr2, but i'm sure some would disagree.
 
Would the step up to the 5850 be much better than the 5770 I had picked out?
 
Yes quite a bit better, as for the DDR3/2 thing vs the gpu, honestly the performance difference isnt there, its just that DDR2 is becoming old tech, so theres no point in investing in it at this point.
 
Heh, and if those combos aren't around when you buy, I do have a couple x4 955 NIB CPUs in my FS thread. ;)
 
Hah enginurd I'd be glad to take them off your hands possibly. Just need to get my paycheck and I have a friend who is buying a system too, so.... ;)
