I hope your April is going well, mine is about to get better: I'm looking for a new system!

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
I am going to be gaming.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
My budget is 1300 after tax. I would typically go to a retail location to pick up the system.

3) Where do you live?
I live in Toronto, Canada.

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
I need a case, mobo, ram, processor, PSU and video card. And if we can sneak in a TB HD, that would be nice but not needed. I was thinking of a 4890 card. And potentially a slightly beefier PSU for a future upgrade of a second card.

I need a mid-tower case, I don't have room (or budget) for a full-tower. I was thinking of something like this: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3911521&Sku=A406-1101

I'm not sure where I stand on the multi-core processing: is there enough evidence to suggest that i will get good value, from a gaming perspective, using dual or quad core? Is one better suited than the other?

I would rather stack in 4 GB of RAM, even if I am using XP - in hopes that W7 will be a good investment. Or, if I can be sold on Vista I might include that.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
I have 3 HDD I will be reusing. I have an Xfi card which I might as well swap in. And I wifi card.

I have an OCZ 650 Powerstream, which I am thinking might be wiser to use as a backup in case of a failure, than reusing. i have RMA'd it once for a replacement.

6) Will you be overclocking?
Nope. Stock.

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
A Samsung Syncmaster 244T (or a very similar model) 1920x

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Within a couple of weeks.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
I would like crossfire, for a future upgrade option.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?
I have a legit copy of XP. Should I try Vista or wait for W7?

Thank you for any help.

Oh and wait for Windows 7

Well, for one thing, if he orders from NCIX/Directcanada which is cheaper in almost all cases, it's only 5% tax. So he would have $1228 to spend rather than just $1000. NCIX also has a price match system, find a cheap price, and just link it in the cart to have it price matched (Canada only and they do check).

So basically, he can assume ~$10 for shipping (NCIX has the promo every couple of weeks where you buy the $10 gift card and get free shipping....you can use the $10 gift card on a mouse pad or something later).

Use shopbot.ca and pricecanada.com to find cheapest prices on items in Canada. Very useful for price matching at NCIX. All my prices are from there and now you've got a very reasonably fast computer!

And...PC_User's processor leads to a Q6600....

CPU: i7 920 - $360
Video Card: Power Color 4890: $270
RAM:G-Skill DDR3-1333 -$100
Mobo: MSI x58 for $222
PSU: Antec EA650 $92 or PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610W for $92 after $15 MIR

CASE: A good quality (aluminum) case >> plastic/steel cases...trust me when you need to move your case around or anything. Maybe try lian li?

Quite a bit of money left for a case and if you decide to, maybe cut down on the case for a hard drive although I wouldn't. A hard drive is cheap and easily upgradeable in the future, buying a crummy case and having to move parts over would suck and the price of cases remain relatively constant.
Or, spend an extra $80 on a P6T or DFI LP Dk motherboard. Both are pretty good choices.
