Cases should be in next week. Then the fun begins.

I have recieved a few e-mails asking for pics or general info on why we are doing this project.
Reason #1: Because we want to.
Reason #2: Because we can.
Reason #3: Because we think it will be cool.
Reason #4: Because no one else has.

I also got a few questions as to what kind of crazy set up do we have in the house that would require such a massive amount of storage. So here are some pics of our desks.

For those of you who are interested in this thread the last of the storage drives has arrived.
Total of 24 250GB Wester Digital SATA Drives. We only are still waiting on the cases and boot drives (Both back ordered). Then we will have some pics for the project to actually move forward.

Dam... I've been wanting to build a raid 5 setup for a while now, but have been lacking funds. Seeing your plans makes me want to sell a kidney or something...

Just got a call from Fedex. The Cases were shipped yesterday and will be arrinving later today. They are being delivered to Captboom's office so we have to get them home from there ourselves. The only problem is that each case is 72 lbs. and the boxes they come in make it difficult to put in a car. So I may have go to Captbooms office and take them home in my truck. That is a minor problem compared to not having the cases at all.

I totally agree with your reasons for doing this. Besides, it's fun! I would do something like this if I had the funds. You have said that you guys are in IT but what exactly do you do? (If you don't mind me asking)

Actualy i have a total of 6 EQ toons.

And 3 toons that where given to me when they quit.


3 more and i would have 12 which is 2 full groups.


Means i need 6 more comps


Now to just come up with a way to have them all in front of me at once.


Don't suppose you all know where i can get like 10 " lcd's that i could build into a big board :)


Better yet a neural interface to the game.

72lbs per case? Good thing you have a truck. Can you imagine me trying to put that in a taxi on my home from work....the cabbie would demand the craziest tip...

better still, the subway! They'd think I had a bomb!
 
75 lbs x 2 chassis = 150 lbs.
1.5 lbs x 12 drives x 2 chassis = 18 x 2 = 36 lbs.
Misc. hardware = 10-20 lbs.

150 + 36 + 20 = 206lbs.

Mount that sucker low, man. :)

Been having some problems


First off the supermicro powersupply headers are to short i had to buy extensions.

Then the front panel connections where 6 inchs to short so i had to solder in 6 inchs extensions into them FUN FUN


Now i have to figure out how to get the drive leds from the hot swap backplane to plug into the 3ware card Fuckers don't just plug in.

Not to mention that even though i have 12 250 gig drives configured for raid5 with one parity drive atm my total raid capacity is 2.5 terabytes but windows will only give me a formated capacity of 2 terabytes somethings not right there.

Also it won't allow me to convert the drive to dynamic


Getting a bit frustrated.

Also the stuipd sata cables that came with the 3ware are freaking long as hell i need to buy replacments that are closer to the right length


Any ideas why window wouldnt display a drive size larget then 2 terabytes even when the raid controller shows it as being 2.5 terabytes

250gb (theoretical) = ~233gb (real world)

so (233 x 12) - 233(parity) = 2563gbs

It's like you lost nearly two and a half drives there..which, at about $150 a drive, is like $375 w/ of hardware......x2 cause you have two of the exact same setup? That's almost a $1000 of drives you overshot according to http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm

This isn't all bad news. Don't unix/linux file systems offer more space? you could create your unimatrices in those OSes, formatted as such, and then get drivers for your machines....samba style or whatever's out now. With hte drivers, you'd still be able to access all the storage space...I'm really just hypothesizing here.

That's the exact same calculation i used.

But the windows drive capacity shows me 2048 as the biggest volume

Regardles of how many drives i use

I even temp configured it for raid 0 jbod and had 2.7 terabytes according to the raid array but windows still only shows it as 2 terabytes.

I am currently exploring using a unix like suse to see what it detects the drive as..

However it's looking like maybe the damm os's can't handle this much capacity

Maximum Volume Size - "Volumes larger than 2 terabytes (TB) are possible by using 64KB clusters to achieve a 256TB volume. Volumes larger than 2TB must be dynamic, not basic." In windows, you have to have 2 x hardware RAID5 partitions than software striped to have <2TB.

For ONE disk, Windows can only support up to 2TB, even though theoretically NTFS can support > an Exobyte.
For Linux, 2TB is the limit for all block devices in 2.2 and 2.4 kernels. This is
from 2^32 * 512 byte sectors. I believe the artifial 2TB limit will be addressed in kernel 2.6.
Although, I do remember hearing something about ext3 supporting 4TB ...

I remember hearing that there were patches which addressed the issue, but nothing official.
You may want to look at XFS which is a 64bit file system.
