New Storage Array

im interested to see how this works for you. were going to be buying sata raid enclosures here where i work as an alternative to the scsi ones. 14x140gb 10krpm u320 drives are very pricey :( you can buy 3 or 4 200+gb sata drives for the price of 1 140gb
 
Does the 9500 series support a single array larger than 2Tb? I kept running into that issue with the 7500's.

Anyhoo.. specs say that it will support a single array of over 3T.
 
How are you going to config your storage?

Single Large RAID5? Or RAID 10? etc?

Or multipe RAID arrays?

Looks like with a single large RAID5 you will have 2.75 TB of storage. That is a lot of PORN.

P.S. if going with a single RAID5 setup I would strongly suggest having atleast 1 standby drive. That many drives having a multi drive failure within a short period is not un-heardof. Also with that much storage you really do not want to loose it to HD failure.

Also what is your backup system? Cause that is a lot of data to go down the crapper ;)
 
I plan on haveing 3 hotspairs

The enclosure supports 15 sata hardrives.



And as for backup

Well that would be handled by it's brother

Um are you doing this for home use? Or is this for work?

Also while I can not think of a better way to backup ~3TB of data than your solution without spending a crapload of money, are you concerned at all by location catrophe? Cause if the house burns down your screwed.

The best/cheapest way to handle offsite backups with 3TB is to have an extra set of drives to swap out on the "backup box" and take them offsite in a nice padded case.
 
having 3 hotspares may not be such a great idea... the controller only has 12 ports, so if 2 disks die in succession, you have to rearrange the cables to have 12 drives plugged in before the second goes. The disks will also be spinning all the time, so it's more likely they'll fail...

Also, you will want to back up often, even with the second one. If you delete a file, it's gone from both forever. The other reason to back up is that hardware raid cards are dumb as bricks. my dad had a 8-drive ide raid array, and one disk died. Raid5, so no problem, right? so he pops in a new disk, and it promptly copies the contents of the new disk onto the old array. thankfully it was stuff he didn't need... so basically, back up early & often.

Home use

My roomates and i are in the process of cleaning up the server room and building this stuff.

We are going to be posting some really sick photos soon.

And we picked a name "Project Borg"

Bingo hit the nail on the head


Plus i have 3 hardrives already mounted in drive trays and can swap them out at a moments notice. No waiting on rma's to load a new drive in.

Replacing hardrives as they fail withen minutes of failure is always the best way to do things.

As for what we are doing with it.

We have a massive collection of Anime. Startrek, Farscape, Stargate SG1.

We currently have them spread out on cd and dvd and we wanted them live.

Not to mention our software collection is massive.

Currently live storage in the house totals 1.5 terabytes between all the full hardrives cd etc etc.

So right off the bat where eating up half the array.

We are already talking about adding 2 more in 6 months.

Would bring total capacity up to 12 terabytes

Well since most of your data is of the "static" form, backups are simplied a bit. With good organization doing the backups to DVD type media should be a non-issue.

I currently have a small ~100GB of music in FLAC format and have a very nice storage method that allows me to create a sinle backup set once, and just create another single backup of new stuff I add WITHOUT have to backup what has already been done. This makes backing up to something like DVDs of 14-20 DVDs not an issue since you only do it once. The music does not change once I get it, same with movies and such.
 
What kind of power supplies? You picked the best card IMO...

Whats the build cost? I was thinking about doing the same thing (only 2GB in the beginning though). I'd recomend you have 1 hot spare, so it would be 2.5TB (10 data + 1 parity) in RAID 5.

well, to each his own. ive never used a WD drive and ive had terrible luck with maxtor.
 
I have had just the oposite.

Hitachi bought there drive division from IBM.

Just about everyone knows about the High failure rate of ibm drives and especialy how ibm tried to weasle out of it saying the drives where being used to hard and werent meant for extended use as it shortened there lifespan.

These hitachi hd's are based on the very same technology.

Until they prove themselves over a few years as being reliable i am not jumping on that band wagon

3ware =P the way to go!

i personally have 2 3ware cards on 2 machines.
one of them a 7810 with 7 200gb (filled with anime only on a 100mbit line =)
the other a 7500-8 with 3 250gb (desktop)

hope you dont choke your raid card like i did.
 
Could make a nice direct connect hub, assuming you have enough bandwidth.
 
Ordered the 2 cases today there on backorder for 2 or 3 days


the hardrives are going to be here by end of week.

I will let the roomates provide there own system specs as the above is just me
