new side pannel design

si school ends on thursday this week and i need something to do while im not at work, i have always wanted to change the side pannel to my tsunami dream. here is the idea. everyone has seen those roll up wharehouse doors

i plan on modifying the design a little thouhg, instead of having the door rull up it would just slide on a track behind the motherboard.

i think if i took some 1/4" plexi and then some of these hinges

or maybe somehting smaller i could wokr it out as far as the door. any ideas on what to use for a tracck and the way to drive it?

advice or critiscism welcome
 
I would say to get inspiration from those pull down windowshades you see for car windows. My mom uses one and there is a button on the retracting axel that you push that releases the gear from its "catch". Remember though that you door is going to be rolled up and potentially take up a lot of space. You'de have to make the sections of the panel very short to get it to roll up and down smoothly.

well the program is called sketchup the smae one the creator of paralles hex uses

i forgot to add this to my fisrt post, but i can not take credit for the design of the case, mobo, psu, hdd, or cdrom, i did make the case pannel thouhg. i could ahve made my own stuff, but it would ahve teken way to long
 
Pretty cool idea...
I know that a roll-up door was used on the Doom 3 mod out here, so that may be a good place to look for inspiration. Are you looking for a motorized solution to open/close the door or just a manual one? Obviously, the motorized version would be more complex, but still doable. And I think your idea to roll it over to the other side of the case is pretty smart, too. The only problem there is that it's going to be a pain to get to both sides of the case at once, unless you design the door to be removable.

As for the hinges, though, you're going to want some other than just standard door hinges, unless you find some really small, decent looking ones. and a piano hinge may even be better. You'll have to do some figuring so that the plexi panels are touching when the hinge is fully open, too, so that you don't have a bunch of open cracks.

On the tracks, you just need to find some kind of U-channel that is a little bit larger than whatever you are going to have sliding through it. Keep in mind that it has to be something you can bend or easily fabricate a curve out of it. If you've got access to a milling machine, I'm sure Al would make some really slick tracks! And you should be able to get away with adding end pieces to the plexi panels that just have a small finger that fits into the channel. Of course, it would be much smoother if you could somehow add a wheel on that finger and have the wheel move inside the channel.

Dangit! Now you've got me in "resolution mode." as one of my friends calls it! :)
 
The role up door that I made for a furniture project was made from glueing 1/4 or 1/8 inch thick wood strips to canvas or burlap. Not sure if you are wanting to use wood though.
 
idealy the door would be see through.

i guess i will go tKe antoher look at the doom 3 case mod
