Problem: PC is hanging after a day or so being left on idle.

No BSOD, the screen just freezes. I can still hear my fans spinning and the LED lights on my rig are still on. At this point I have to press reset.

This has been happening for the past 2 weeks since I built this system.

Specs:

Core i5 2500K
MSI P67A GD-55
PC12800/1600mhz Team Xtreem DDR3 (8GB) (CL9) 4x2
HIS HD 5870
Windows 7 64bit Ultimate
1 TB Western Digital Caviar Black
750 GB Seagate Barracuda
Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium

Stuff I’ve tried:

Reformatting
Installed all the latest drivers
Re-seating RAM
Defragmenting
Testing RAM on BIOS, says its good

I’m pretty sure now that this is a hardware problem. Motherboard or RAM issue defect?

Any ideas guys? Thanks.

Check the stickied 'Basic Troubleshooting Guide". In addition:

[Testing the RAM]
Download Memtest86+ v4.00 or whatever the latest version is, unzip it, burn the ISO file to a CD, and then boot from it, just like you would do with the XP/Vista install CD. Let Memtest+ run for at least three hours on each stick of RAM separately as well as test the RAM all together. Go for a full 24 hours if you want to be completely sure that the RAM is not a problem. If you start seeing errors, than your RAM is defective or you have incorrect settings for the RAM.

[Testing the Hard Drive]
Download the CD image of Hitachi Drive Fitness Test, burn the ISO file to a CD, and then boot from it, just like you would do with the XP/Vista install CD. Test the hard drive and see if any problems are found. DFT will run on most manufacturers' hard drives. Alternatively, you can use Seagate's SeaTools for DOS to test a Seagate or Maxtor drive. For a Western Digital drive, you could use Data Lifeguard Tools for DOS to test a Western Digital drive.

[Testing the CPU]
Use Prime 95, OCCT, Orthos or Intel Burn Tool to stress test the CPU.

Thanks, I've tested the RAM already and it is fine.

However others have said that this RAM may not be compatible with the motherboard.

Someone else mentioned this in another forum:

"So what i did i was only to changing XMP profile / SPD memory from JEDEC4 to XMP-1600 in my bios, all the freeze/hangs stopped. Do give me your feedback if it helps to solve your issues too."

How do I do this? I'm not familiar at all with playing around with those settings.

My mobo uses a UEFI BIOS interface.

Try manually entering your memory settings.

Can't remember the exact area in the UEFI, but in the Overclock section, change your Memory settings to "linked".

Then under "Advanced DRAM settings", set the corresponding values accordingly.

Don't forget to adjust set the DRAM voltage to the appropriate value as well

Ok so I went into the bios and took a pic. Here are the default values:

Also, I tried playing around by manually changing the settings and it it now won't even boot up saying Overclock Failed, change settings, etc.

I think it has something to do with the voltages, etc? I didn't change those things because I honestly don't know what I should be changing.

Can you guys tell me what I should change it to please?

My ram is:

DDR 3 1600mhz CL: 9-9-9-24 (1.65v)

Update:

Ok so I got it to boot now. I did all the changes and manually set it to 1600. As you can see the default set it to 1333, WTF?

The only thing I didn't do was enable XMP because it wouldn't boot with that on, weird?

Anyway it's working now and I hope the hanging issue is fixed, do you guys think this was the reason then?

Here are my settings now:

Leave XMP off.
You probably needed to bump up your DRAM voltage to 1.65v to run it at 1600. Looks like you're good to go.

Thanks.

I would just like to know one thing to have peace of mind.

Was the setting of 1333mhz the cause of these random crashes then?

I'm not sure but I wonder if running the RAM at the lower voltage was part of the issue?

Yes, I was wondering this as well. I guess I have to give it a couple of days to monitor the situation and see if the crashing has stopped.

Unless anyone else has other ideas or comments.
