Hi guys,

I just got my new PC running, here's the info:

Antec P180 Case
Antec TruePowerII 550 W PSU
Asus A8N-SLI Premium
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
2 GB Corsair DDR 400 Mem
Maxtor DIamondmax 300 GB HD
BFG Geforce 7800 GTX OC (Stock OC)
Sound Blaster AUdigy 2 ZS

Cooling:
the case has 4 120MM fans, one in the front sucking in, one in the lower chamber for the PSU, one in the top blowing out by the CPU, and one in the back, blowing out right by the CPU.

I have an XP-90 heatsink with a silentcat (or something like that) fan on it.

I also bought one of those 2 dollar card cooler slot things from newegg.

System is running stable when its idle, left it on for 24 hours, CPU and MB temps are around 32-34 C. Not sure what the GPU is when its idle, but here's my problem.

I can play BF2 (settings maxxed out of course) for about 20 minutes, then it locks up, and I have to restart. When I reboot, the GPU is around 51 C (120 something F).

I thought this case had superior cooling??!? Im not OCing anything and its already locking up. Spent over 2 grand to NOT have this happen.

Someone help me. Is there a VGA card cooler I should get that will solve this problem?

Note: I took out the little side VGA vent thing that came with this case, it had a 80MM fan slot that blew air directly onto the card, but I took it out for better case airflow.

WHat do you think?

51C isnt that hot at all. Whats the ambiant temp in the room where the computer sits? What RPM is the heatsink fan turning? Have you tucked away all the cables to promote better airflow?

How did you go about applying the thermal paste, and what type did you use?

I'd guess that the lockups are something other than heat related.

whenever you go cutting edge theres a big chance you get burned, thats why its somtimes better waiting a while for the next revision of stuff before buying into it
at least thats my opinion

Does it happen with any other games? You know there is a Memory leak in the new patch (BF2) if that is what you are running.

Thats odd, because I have an athlon 64 X2 also, and 2 7800s, and I get crashes too, like in 3dmark and shit. Although it could have something to do with the incredible amount of voltage im pushing into this thing on stock cooling to hit 2.6ghz. But whats wierd is that prime 95 on both cores would run 4 hrs and no errors, but then when I do 3dmark or something like that I get crashes. So I wonder if something else is having a problem. I dont know. Any suggestions?

I'm having the same issue. I tracked it down to my BFG 7800GTX overheating. (71c+ with a window fan blowing on it.)

I'm thinking it's a good excuse to go watercooling. Now if only AC will release a 7800 block, I'll be set!

a lot of people get errors after more than 4 hours on prime. And you were running two copies of prime right? You seem to be implying that.

a graphics card will not overheat at 71c. If that is the peak temp, then it isn't a problem as long as you don't overclock the gfx card higher than it is right now.

---
OP:
Maybe the fan can't keep the cpu cool at load temps. It sounds like a low cfm fan. You might also not have good contact between cpu and heatsink.

This is stock out of the box, with a window fan on it. Without the fan, I don't know how high it gets, because it locks up :)

so how do I go about figuring out what this is? Asus Probe finds nothing wrong with any of the voltages on the PSU. I heard some weird bug with Corsair mem and ASUS boards, how would I go about finding out what it is?

I don't think its your graphic card overheating, my 6600GT used to run at 64 degrees idle and reaches 90's in some game and it never lock up, but anyways now i got a cooler for it so yeah.

I would suggest running memtest on it? What memory chips do you have? 4 x 512 mb? Unmatched 2 x 1 gig?

Some motherboards have problems running four chips dual channel. Unmatched memory chips in dual channel configs can also cause that problem you are having. I've seen it before with two unmatched hyperx memory modules where it'd only crash in game.

This is what I have:

CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail

Here's a little info that might help out:

so the computer is running stable, but sometimes when I boot up, it gives me a boot disk, system error thing, it cant find the HD. Then sometimes it will cycle a disk check over and over until I skip it.

When I installed XP SP2, I "quick formatted" the brand new drive, could this be part of my problem? Is it smart to re-do this, and do the long slow format?

Where can I get MemChecker or whatever that was called?

It doesnt sound like heat. My 7800 GTX will reach 71+ centigrade in games and thats with two 80mm side window fans blowing in. Do you have nVIDIA firewall installed??? I just put up a new system last weekend with an ASUS A8N sli-deluxe and the minute I installed the firewall the whole system got real buggy. I got rid of it fast. Now I have no lockups at all. I think you should slow format your brand new drive, too.

The nVIDIA firewall is part of the motherboard driver package on the MB disc. I recall the disc will ask you if you want to install it. I think I said yes and it installed. You will see the icon in the tray if its up and running. It is not part of the bios per se. I am not sure if the firewall alone or in combination with another piece of software was the culprit. BUT just after I chose to load NV Firewall and Norton security all the bugs started. My set froze like an iceburg. So since I wasnt too far into the whole deal, I reformatted, reloaded XP, then MB drivers less NV firewall, then loaded all my other drivers, etc. The system runs smooth as silk now. Im not 100% blaming the firewall,but.... I also read where there have been memory issues with 2GB and ASUS delux and premium SLI. More premium than delux, which is why I chose to buy the deluxe (its been around a bit longer) check your bios #, you may need a newer one??? I have 1011 and it runs sweet. I have an FX, 2 GB of HyperX PC3200, the MB,7800 GTX, and an audigy sound card. I hope this helps. Im not an engineer, I take things slow and check for bugs after each time I load something. I tried to simply DISable the nvfirewall and the system still froze...so I jetisoned it. Who knows....

I just installed the same 2 x 1gb corsair memory, and I'm having issues /the ram. Took me almost 4 hrs of bios tweaks/reboots to get this thing running @ my same oc, except mem is @ 195mhz instead of 231. I just oredered 2 x 1gb patriot ll ram, gonna try those and decide which ones to rma. Not sure if I just got a bad set of corsair sticks, or if it is indeed a mb
related problem.

I have 4x512 sticks of HyperX rather than 2x1Gb maybe there is something to filling all the slots????? Im no where near a memory expert so maybe you should search a thread on the Asus Sli and memory????

Any update? This makes me pretty nrevous since I have pretty much the EXACT SAME setup coming in via FedEx, even the same RAM and case.

Same mb, same cpu, don't have the 7800gtx installed yet (waiting for ramsinks), possibly same ram (can't look it up at the moment)...

My system booted fine, but when I tried the slightest OC it would bomb out. Finally realized that the Asus bios (and I did flash it with the latest stable as of about 1 month ago) was feeding the ram something like 2.43V or something and had auto set it to something like 3-4-4-11-2T. When I went to the Corsair site they were talking about how they ran a nice steady 2-2-2-5-1T at 2.75V (!).

I have since changed my mind (for the time being) on OC'ing the system, but I DID want to get rid of that 2T command time; in bios I manually set the CPU to 1.4V (possibly 1.45 - whatever the upper range of standard is for the cpu - check the AMD site), left the bus at 200MHz, but also changed the ram to 2.75V, 3-3-3-8-1T.

During one OC session (minor - was only shooting for 2.4GHz to get the equivalent of a 4600+) the system ran 100 sandra tests (memory, cpu arith, cpu float, and cache) with no problem at all; but when I booted into linux (where I spend most of my time) I got driver load errors. So I am not convince that using Sandra burn-in is all that inclusive of a stability test...

After changing the ram voltage it has been steady as a rock. Note that I am running a PC Power and Cooling 510W SLI psu, and ensured the 12V and 5V (but haven't checked 3.3V) were good via a multimeter, so the psu should definitely not be the problem.

So I'd go to the corsair site and check your specific ram (in case it is not the same as mine) for good operating voltage, and check your bios & adjust as necessary.

yep yep gotta prove in that memory, and if you are overclocking its crtical. google memtest. quick check is to loosen the memory timings in the bios and see if the freezes go away but couple runs of memtest is better.

It must be an issue with the asus a8n-sli dlx, as I tried the new patriot 3200LL sticks, and had the exact same issues as the corsair. I have lower timings witht the patriot (2-3-2-5....1t), but still cant use my 8x multi with a higher htt. Stuck @ 2772mhz, 308htt, mem @ 198. That kinda sucks,as thats a 33mhz drop (66 ddr) on the ram speed.....its noticable in f@h in fold times, but I can't notice any diff. in games.

I would suspect the 7800GTX OC is the the thing overheating, it is notorious for running at 70+ celcius, and that's on stock.
