Ok so i have my new 16core Nehalem box, but I cant get any VMs to start with more than 8 cores.

Win7 x64
VMPlayer3.0
 
Are you running notfreds or full linux distro in the VMs?
 
Did you edit the vmware file in a text editor and change the amount of cpu's to 16?
 
even with dual 8core VM?

I'm not sure of the core limit of the VM3 player, so...
 
How much memory are you giving the VM? Maybe that's the prob.
 
actually i just went thru this earlier today with my 16 core nehelam i decided not to fight with it and just running 2 8 core vms. simple as pie

i properly edited my vmx file and it first told me that 8 cores was the limit, and also after i lowered the cores down to 8 it told me max ram i can allow is 3600mb

im also running server 2008 R2 standard, which is 64bit . my rig has 2x 5520s and 12gb ddr3 1066 registered ecc ram.
 
Maybe a native install of Linux is the easiest solution?

Yea i know, but that cant be the case because last week i had n i7 with 4096mb ram allocated.

did they update VMplayer3 to do some funky stuff?
 
No updates have been done to VMPlayer as of last week, they have been pretty set on there current release although I know they will be releasing a small update in a week.

How much RAM do you have allocated for the VM to play, and you do have it set to # cores to 16 correct?

Yea Workstation only sees 8 real cores
It doesnt count the HyperThreading

Well I am thinking that Hyper-V will work better than VMware.
I would prefer to use Win7

Could you try windows 7 pro? That supports 2 physical processors...

Its not a Host OS issue

I have Ultimate, it also supports two CPU Sockets.
The problem is VMware sucks, because they dont have much competition.

This thread over at the FF has details of the the trails of getting a 16 core VM to work.
It looks like VMware Player only supports 8 cores.
You may need to use Virtual Box to get 16 core support.

If the disk image was built on a 32 bit box, this is around the limit that the VM can see and is locked there when moved to a 64 bit box.
You need to get a disk image built on a 64 bit box with a lot of ram to have 5 or more gigs set aside for the disk image.
I've just built one with 6 gigs set aside for the VM because my original disk image had that limit.

Unless you are wanting to run the -bigadv units, there is no difference.
(If this is the case , you will want to run -15 smp for the best performance on those units)

Running -16 smp in a VM (Hyper-V or Vmware) is not the best idea.
Just run -8 x 2 or -4 x 4

Well its on hold until I can get a 16 core VM going
Theres no way I can afford to run a dedicated Linux Box.
And I dont have a 30a circuit in that room.
The 32core will become my WHS and Cert Study box.

The bonus from -bigadv is not liner.

Say your base PpD from just running 4x 4core SMP work-units is going to be around 16k PpD.

Now if you run 2x 8 core VM's with -bigadv work-units and can finish a frame every 44 mins the your PpD doubles to around 32k PpD. Thats finishing 2 work-units every 3 days.

Now if you run just 1x 16 core VM with -bigadv work-units and you can finish a frame every 22 mins then your PDP goes up to around 45k. Thats finishing a work-unit in a day and a half.

So 2x8 and 1x16 do the same amount of work, but the 1x16 gets ~50% more PpD.

A 32 core system can finish a -bigadv work-unit in around 1 day and gets around 90k PpD from it.

I paid 700 for two 295s (30k)
I paid 360 for 3 260's (22k)
I paid 320 for 4 88's (21k)
I paid 620 for 4 GX2s (42k)

Take the 88's out and there is about 90k, for about 1700$ (damn I spend too much on folding :( )
Then there is PSU's and CPU's, cant forget those...
Im over 2 grand not counting my 88 4 way and I promise I pull more power than his 32 core would..

Hopefully, we will see true SLI or xFire folding in the next GPU client/core, to allow the massive parallel processing power of our GPUs to be unlocked.
 
that would be good, until Fermi I can only fold on 2 of 4 cores on my 295's, Ive got them as a Quad SLI setup in my gamer rig

Might have to set up a 4 Core VM to help make a few more points lol

VMware does not support it.
VirtualBox doesnt really work well.

You're looking at 8 CPU at well over $1,000 each plus prob over $1,000 for the dual mobo's needed plus 8 banks of server memory plus a dual redundent PSU's, etc, etc.
You'll be very lucky to get any change from $20,000 ...... :eek:

Actually I have everything but the PSU's and some stuff for the case mod and Im at $1368 so far.
