Don't really need help with a build, more so looking for whats the best bang for the buck right now on the non gaming or performance side of things. I have seen some nice deals on the x6 1045T I think and the like, but not sure how those stack up to the newer AMD chips or an i5 etc in every day tasks.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Web browsing, youtube, facebook, maybe some word processing.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$400, tax and shipping included.

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
Houston area texas, and yes, I have a MC I can go to.

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

I have parts I can give them, such as DDR3 1866 RAM (8GB), HDD's (or maybe an extra SSD I have), PSU, case (maybe), dvd burner,

6) Will you be overclocking?
Doubtful, this build is all about stable and not very demanding usage, I also live out of state and can't run over to fix a problem if the OC is not stable or the like.

7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
1920 x 1080 21.5"

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
No set date, but they want it in the next few months.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.
None, other than built in video, most new CPU's have iGPU's anyway.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
No, plan on Win7 64bit.

You have to be more specific on the parts that will be reused on the new build, especially the RAM and PSU. Some DDR3 RAM is rated at a significantly higher voltage than what many newer CPUs can safely handle (most likely, your existing RAM is almost always rated at 1.65V or even 1.8V while newer CPUs can only handle up to about 1.55V), while a lot of PSUs can't handle more than about half their rated wattage.

I know what I have, and it will work, don't worry. As I said, not looking for build advice, but rather whats the best deals going around right now for non-gaming CPU's.

Ram is 1.5v or 1.35v if I use the Samsungs I have laying around, PSU I have a large pick of options, from 430W Seasonic to a Silverstone DA800.

We're just making sure. We get way too many people here who think they have suitable RAM and PSUs when it turns out those parts are crap. In your case, you do have good parts to reuse but these days we just can't take the word of the OP at face value anymore.

In any case, for the usage you're talking about, honestly, even the cheap Pentium G630 would fit that need just fine. I'd honestly doubt they'll notice the difference between a Pentium G630 and a Core i5 2400 or AMD Phenom II X6 CPU or even an AMD Llano CPU in everyday tasks. In fact, at this very moment, I'm on a laptop with an Intel T2050 CPU at 1.6GHz watching youtube (well listening to a youtube video), posting in the forum, and browsing Facebook.Considering that the Pentium G630 is far faster than my laptop's CPU, that (or virtually any CPU of similar performance and price) should fit your clients' needs just fine.

MC's August deals ends today so we won't know what MC's September's deals will be till tomorrow. So what's the likelihood of you being able to buy in September? I ask because it's those MC deals that usually makes AMD a pretty good bang for the buck option.

Oh, I understand, which is why I said not to worry, I see that allot also from friends who think they "know" computers, and I ask what PSU they have and I often get a blank stare, they don't even know. I am shocked myself how people spend over 1k on parts and think almost nothing of the single part that powers them all.

I also understand the CPU power side of it, the current rig is a E2100, it's not a bad little chip by any means and does the above pretty well. However, I am thinking about doing a mini-ITX build with this inside of a BitFenix Prodigy. I also have just about everything other than CPU/mobo and OS for it, but I also want something to future proof for a good while which is why I am looking at the more powerful side of things, and since I am using allot of left over parts that I have, and talking them into 400 on a computer is easy, that's a fair amount to future proof on a CPU/mobo, at least I think so. I believe they will see the biggest change with the SSD and what they do with it.

The biggest reason for this build is that the one they are using is an old HTPC of mine which is running linux, something they can not get use to and call me many times a week on how to do something with it, or are having a problem. Which is something I would much rather not having to do and I don't want to buy a new windows key and put it on such old hardware, if I am going to have them buy a new OS, I want it to be on hardware I know will last a good while longer.
 
Well you can rarely ever future proof anything since the user's needs can change over time.

In any case, since you're planning on a mITX setup, that basically rules out AMD as there's only two AMD socket mITX mobos available on Newegg and neither are that great: One's a low quality Jetway AM2+ mobo that still uses DDR2 RAM and the other is an AsRock FM1 mobo. So you're basically stuck with Intel if you want mITX. CPU wise, I'd recommend the Pentium G630 at a minimum, a Core i3 2120 at the most, and the Pentium G850/860 in between those two CPUs. mITX is not a have to, which is why I did not post it in the first post, it's just something I would like to do, as I have never done a mITX build. However, what I do build will depend on what deals and best bang for the buck I can find, if it does not offer allot over what I can get an mITX build with I would go that direction, other wise there are no size restrictions.

Also, users needs over all might change, but given subsets (such as my parents) never do. And I think of a i3 as a minimum rather than a maximum. Also for the price of that mobo and a i3 I can get a 2500k and mobo from MC for less, or a FX8120 with mobo for $140. I am trying to spend as much of the $400 as I can, but at the same time buy the CPU that will perform best with the kinds of loads listed.
 
There is another offering for a AMD board (sorry late to this party). It got some very decent reviews from a bunch of different places and is cheaper than the ASRock board, more than the Jetway and from a decent brand: Gigabyte

Not really, as I have everything other than cpu and mobo, with a microcenter near by, the performance per buck I can get you would be hard pressed to find a Dell for and well where is the fun in that?
 
If your parents like the design of the Prodigy, then go for it.

Go for a basic good quality board like the P8H77-I it's around 100$
Fix it up with a basic Intel CPU like the Pentium G630 or i3-2100, around 120$.
Win 7 will cost them 100$
Bitfenix prodigy is 80$

total 400$ using prices found on the egg.

You should be able to go below 400$ with MC combo deals.

I 2 or 3 years the basic dual core may not be able to keep up, but by that time you may be looking to replace that 2500K you are using now, allowing them a simple boost in performance when that time comes.

No, however the more power it has the longer it will last, also it has to do with power per buck, which having a microcenter near by makes the prebuilt choice not that great. I can pick up an i5 or FX for the same price, now if microcenter did the same deals as cpu's on prebuilts it would be worth it. And it's no fun.
