I upgraded from a Canon S45 to a Canon Digital Rebel XT today. Very nice camera ! Looks like I'll have to do some reading before I start snapping some pics (right). I always took pics in the "Auto" mode with the S45. I'll have to learn to take advantage of the settings on the XT now. Any recommendations for on lenses ? I'm sure I don't need another lens until I get used to using this camera. July 4th weekend is coming and I plan to go up to Vail, Colorado with the wife. I should be able to snap some nice pics while we're there. :)

The kind of lenses you buy would depend on the kind of subjects you shoot. For a nice, decently fast zoom lens, there's the Canon 70-210/F4 L lens, which I think goes for around $600 new. It's part of the L series of lenses, which uses Canon's top end glass, and has a constant aperture of 4 throughout the zoom range.

You might also want to check out some prime lenses, which tend to be sharp as a tack and and are also usually very fast lenses. There's the good old nifty 50mm/1.8 (~$90), or the much more expensive 50mm/1.4 (~$300). I have the Nikon version of this lens (the 50/1.8), I use it a lot more than the 18-70mm that came with my camera. It's nice for portraits and for low light photography thanks to its max aperture.

Then there's also other fixed lengths like 85mm, 135mm, all the way up to 1000mm or more (though cost gets up the the several thousand or higher for the really long focal lengths).

Outside of that, that's all I can say about lenses for Canon, as I have only used a Canon system a few times. However, both Nikon and Canon make 80-200/F2.8 lenses that are fast and sharp but also go for at least $900. It's the lens I want to buy someday. :)

So get used to shooting with the 350D. Getting back into photography with an SLR, I never use any of the automatic shooting modes like Auto, Portrait, or Landscape on my D70. I only use Manual, Shutter Priority, and Aperture Priority. Otherwise, using it like a regular point and shoot all the time would defeat the purpose of having an SLR, right?

Have fun in Colorado.

The 17-85 IS is a nice lens, little expensive though.

The kit lense works but not well, its short zoom range sucks if your trying to use it for a carry around lense. I have a 70-210mm F/4 (not L), a great lense for the price (can't buy new, can get them off ebay ~$150) but the low end of it (70mm) might be a bit much for you to carry around. I'd look into 55-200mm USM or 28-135 USM, the prime lenses are awsome for soft fast portirats. (Some people use them for everything) The L lenses are awsome, but i've read once you get into the low fixed apeature (F/2.8) it becomes a hit and miss with them.

Good luck and let us know what you choose!

Bastard......Just kidding...Seems like everyone is getting the camera that I am eyeing....
