Here is what I just ordered up from Newegg...

Intel Pentium D 805
Asus P5N-e SLI
Corsair XMS2 2gig kit
BFG Tech 8800GTS
Zalman cnps9500
Seagate 320gig sata 3 drive
ViewSonic VG2230wm
PC Power & cooling Silencer 610

Here is what I am coming from:

A64 2800+
DFI Lanparty UT
1 gig corsair
320gig seagate
6600gt.

This is going to be my first home-built Intel box since I had a dual p3 box like 4 or 5 years ago.

Why did you spend all of that money on mid-high end range stuff and not get a Core 2 CPU?

Please tell me you're just waiting for the April 22nd price cuts.

At the time, its what I had for money for my upgrade.

I was reading that this chip can OC pretty decent, so, I might try that. I wanted to keep everything under $1500, screen and video where important to me the most.

Buh-bye in your face 19" crt, hello 22" lcd that I can push back closer to the wall:D

You could have easily taken money from the psu and gotten a core2, you really didnt need that much psu especially its price.

I wanted a quality PSU, and always wanted a PC P&C. I plan to also add in another video card down the road:eek:

I remember one time, I cut corners on a PSU, and I had caps explode, lesson learned, never again buy a cheap-o.

LOL...

You can also get a Corsair HX620, which is as good as a PC P&C ;)

For the CPU, I agree with others and it's a bad waste. If you are really strapped for cash, then get a Core 2 Duo E4300 and ditch the expensive Corsair XMS2 and remplace it with a cheaper one.

That cpu was a really bad choice. I've heard a lot people say that there fps increased dramatically from switching to a P4 to a Core2.

yeah i wouldnt of purchased the pent d either. with your budget you could of had a c2d. i would of made cuts somewhere else to fit a better processor in. thats so important.

Don't skimp on the PS, Mobo, and Processor. Those are some of the core components that you may be working with quite often to tweak and to provide overall system stability.
I have the Corsair PS and I love it.

If the 805 is just to hold him over for awhile I don't think his rig is bad at all.

A e4300 at newegg is still $170 but the 805 is only $71, thats quite a bit cheaper. And the rest of his rig looks good. He can oc the piss out of the 805, and when he is ready drop a c2d or quad core in there at anytime.

Buying a different brand than PC&C isnt skimping, thats my whole point. You spent alot more on a psu than you had to, and cut back where you shouldnt have (cpu). I dont remember recommending a "budget" psu, I stated that there are other QUALITY brands for less, giving you more money on getting a E4300 or similar. The P-D 805 needs major overclocking to be quick and INHALES power (I should know, I have one).

I plan to OC the proc, and I am thinking wait for quad cores to come, or, the price of c2d to come down on price.

Either way coming from my current setup, it should be a big step up.

Yes, it is.

The setup that you are upgrading to is going to be slower then what you had before. Send back that cpu, send back the psu. The cpu is very important to getting good fps, I would say in a lot of games you are going to see worse performance then what you would see with the 2800+. Big mistake in my opinion. no overclocking will fix your performance problems, since the pentium d was a peice of shit to begin with. you should have posted this before buying, if it hasnt been sent out yet I would call up newegg and cancel.

As far as PSU goes, did you visit the PSU forum lately? Corsair is the latest rage, not PC&C. I'm not knocking it down, it's a quality psu, but it doesn't mean it's the only quality PSU out there. And yeah, with that GPU, you CPU is gonna be a bottleneck, no matter what speed you gonna run it at, imho.

Its been sent out. I guess when the chips fall then it will be time to upgrade.

to me, that looks like a pretty good setup to hold you over until a core2 (or quad, or whatever) .. honestly, I loved my 805 in gaming, even though it was a bit warm. that zalman should allow you to hit 4ghz the chip, unless it's a super shitty chip. A core2 would be nice, but hey, its really not as bad as others are making it out to be.

and coming from a 2800+ (if thats not oc'd to like 2.7ghz or so), it will be a BIG difference, perhaps not so much in games but in everyday usage. I'm running a 915 chip @ 3.78ghz as a secondary workstation and it rocks, feels just as fast as my core2 @ 3.0 in everything but games.

you'll enjoy the rig. :)

I think its still going to be a lot better, this system, is a socket 754 system, and it runs stock speeds. No dual channel, and no upgrade routes really left on this setup.

From what I gather is that you can OC this chip and beat the stock c2d e6300, so I think either way, I will come out good.

I also bought 3 80mm case fans to go with this new setup, and I have a 92mmx38mm fan on the case I will be installing the new stuff into. I will also be grabbing my 80mmx38mm from my barton box, I plan to start with the quiet fans, and go from there;)

This is simply not true, an OC'ed 805 stomps the 2800+.

I like how anyone that posts their rig on hardocp these days gets totally trashed if they didn't get a core 2 duo. Sure they are the best bang for the buck, but they are also not 70 dollars. You pretty much had the rig that I am still on, and I would be very excited to receive what you will be getting. Sure it's not the BEST you could have done, but it saved you at least 100 dollars for now.

I agree. And when the guy wants to upgrade to a Core2 or Core2 Quad, he can.

Yea i agree with everyone. But some people are making it sound like your buying a socket 754 board with an agp slot. He was well aware of his budget and his needs!

What the OP is doing is pretty smart and if I had thought of it might have done the samething myself.

With the new system he has now with the 805D @ $71 he can play around with overclocking the piss out of it for 3 to 6 months, enjoy a nice increase in performance from what he had. Then sell the 805D for $35 or $40 to someone who does not have a c2d ready system. He had the use of the 805 for awhile and is only out $35 or $40.

By then the Intel price cuts will have kicked in full force and pick up a nice c2d quad in the $250 range and see another huge increase in performance.

what ya'll say makes sense if he hadn't just taken the money he saved on not getting a C2D and then wasting it in other parts of his PC... its not like we're saying spend less here. We're saying that he could have got a Corsair PSU, cheaper ram that is nearly as good, and gotten the C2D for the SAME money, and better performance now.

Sure but it's moot anyway since the first thing he posts is;

Here is what I just ordered up from Newegg...

Sorry to disagree with the other posts but I know folks with 805, 920 and etc.. sitting there unsold. They can't hardly give them away.

I'd save even more money and not bother with spending extra on that new *rage PSU either;) C2D will have a higher resale value and delays a need to upgrade longer as well. Its a better deal than any of the cheap P4s that will still suck for games. Extreme Overclocks or not and the C2D doesn't *need extreme overclocks to kick ass.

Comnon, even the 805 will not suck at games with the video card he has. The 805 is the cheapest dual core money can buy. Runs hot, but not a bad cpu for the money. Some of you are so ingrained that all netburst cpu's are useless in games, that is simply not true.

As far a selling the 805D, just look on ebay. He will have np selling it for $30 or $35. What's his down side? not much. However if he was going to buy a E6600 now and sell it in a couple of months, the down side could easily be $200. Even buying a e4300 right now would have a larger down side in 3 to 6 months than a $70 805D.

He probably did not make the best choice as far as "bang for the buck" on the power supply and the memory. But what he orderd is still good quality parts.

Like I said, if I had thought of this I would have done the same thing, being I was in the same boat and had a aging system, and then sell the 805 and get a quad core this summer.

I bet he bought the corsair twin-x because the gig he bought at least 4 years ago, and, paid top shelf prices for($475), still works great and preformed even when over clocked.

I bet he also bought that huge ass quality PSU because he wants something thats also going to last for years to come and do its duty very well.

I bet within a few months, he will prob dump the 805 and find something better to OC and play with, but, I bet he really wanted a really nice psu, ram, display, and video.

I think I went a little overboard when I said the pc is going to be worse. Its going to be a great pc, since you can still upgrade the cpu next month or two to one of the core 2 duo's. The monitor is an excellent decision, I have a 22" and love it. Just don't go towards the overclocking mania, its just not worth it. I always get paranoid that my overclocked cpu just locked up the system or that the application crash was becasue of the overclock. Dont put yourself through that. The reason I went so overboard was that you could have been more cost efficient with your purchase, other then that have fun with your new pc.

I have been down the road of overclocking, look at my join date;)

I have many boxes that have been overclocked, I did OC this one, but, because I also have about 2tb's worth fo hard drives in it, I don't want to risk corruption.

This 2800+ ran 2.4ghz on air, but because of the drives, I backed it down.

I had a barton 2500+ I ran at 2.45ghz on air

I had a 1ghz tbird I put to 1.73ghz.

I used to go thru cpu's and video cards like TP. All of my oc'd boxes have been amd systems though....

i loved my P5N-E SLI combined with my 805D... but the difference between it and the e4300 are staggering. of course, that's like saying the sky's blue.

going from an 805D to an e4300 increased my FPS in every game i play by a fair margin... but people could make the same 'you suck, go an die' argument about my 7600GT's.

enjoy the games.

well....in all honesty i would have held off until the end of april and waited for the price cuts.

OR.....rather than spending more than double on the PS than you did on the CPU, i would have backed down just a bit on the PS, and gone for something a little economical

Why would you order this and then ask for feedback? I'ts like buying a car and then taking it to a mechanic to see if everything is in good working order. It's too late now, so what's the point?

Because the person has made due this long, why screw around with taking the chance of bending spings on the Socket 775 and etc....? Sorry but the 805 does suck IMHO and really not worth it in a main use system. Thought it Home fileserver proc.

I'd just wait for the april price cuts and then not worry about reselling anything. OTOH, sure picking up a used on for one used for $35 might not be a bad idea but hey:)

The OP is at his discretion to play around with an 805 obviously.... but I think with all the money spent on the setup already, the extra cash for an E4300 wouldn't be unreasonable. That would seem to me why people are like.... "aaaaaaand an 805 to finish it off... Huh??!"

To the OP - Good luck with 4ghz + though, you could get bragging rights at least :D

My PC Power 510 is almost 5 years old and its never let me down..... It powered my NF-7 and 1700+ back then and it can still handle my E6600 right now and everything else I had in between..... It was at the time in a class of its own but not anymore, there are some many capable PS now for alot cheaper....... It even makes less sense that you are sacrificing the main part of you computer so you can get a PS thats at most marginally better..... Just using cheaper rams instead of Corsair can probably save you $40-$50,......

Well the new pc is together, its a lot better then the last one.

I just need to do some research on these intel fsb settings and ram dividers then its time to juice it up a few notches.

Right now, I have my aa and af maxed out and its still smooth, but, I have not run fraps or anything to get a constant FPS reading. I am going to try a large battle with c&c3 and see how that shapes up, with the last PC, a medium battle really made it choppy.

22" wide screen FTW!
