Nvidia GeForce GTX 280.. or is it the 260? Either way, both are even cheaper now!
We've been on the phone to Nvidia this morning and have word on price drops for the latest Nvidia graphics cards: GeForce GTX 280, 260 and 9800 GTX+. The exact pricing for us (or you) Europeans and our neighbours in the States is:
The GeForce GTX 280 drops to $449 or 359 Euros

GeForce GTX 260 drops to $299 or 239 Euros

GeForce 9800 GTX+ will come in at $199 or 169 Euro
Exact pound sterling prices are as yet to be determined since obviously our small island matters less, but you can extrapolate for yourselves a balance between Euro:pound exchange rate, with the inevitable "British tax that makes everything more expensive than it should", added on top.

The GeForce GTX 260 should now make the competition with the Radeon HD 4870 more fierce, as will the price drops for GeForce 9800 GTX+ with the Radeon HD 4850.

The GeForce GTX 280 price drop is in anticipated response to the Radeon HD 4870 X2's release in the next few weeks.

While a few people that have already bought cards might feel a little bitter, GeForce GTX 280 especially, we'd say that's just the price you pay for jumping on the bandwagon early. Competition is great for the consumer, and thankfully now we have it in spades.

I think a very healthy lesson is being learned now in that jumping on the latest and greatest can cost you in the long run, but never have I seen such a price drop in just a matter of 2 months on the GTX280.

Good to see NV dropping their pants!

It sure does suck to be one of the people who bought a GTX280 at launch.

Poor people who bought a bunch of them at launch and are trying to sell them on Ebay for $800. :( What will that do when the next gen hits? Will they not try to buy out the entire inventory again?

good to see competition firing up but ATi's cards are still way better with price taken into consideration

2 months? You mean 1 month.

BTW, I think the GTX 260 is very tempting now, since it's at the same price as the HD 4870. The 4870 is probably still a bit better, but its idle power draw is horrendous. ATi desperately needs to fix that. For now, I'll have to place my recommendations on the GTX 260 at $300.

I don't think fixing the idle power consumption is going to be a problem. The high draw at idle is because the clock frequency of the GPU and RAM aren't reduced much compared to full load frequencies. You can already change both the idle voltage and clock frequency by editing the BIOS - soon, you'll be able to do it in software using something like Rivatuner. ATI will probably also set the idle clocks lower in a future driver.

Yeah, but who wants to flash their GPU bios and potentially brick the card. AFAIK, that is not a manufacturer-supported option. I've heard of dying 4870s as a result of these bios flashes, so that doesn't leave me with much confidence.

You dont have to flash your bios to set idle clocks. You can do it completely software with just rivatuner. I have my idle clocks set at 325/475/810. You can setup profiles so that the card will automatically overclock when a certain app is launched. Much safer route.

lol poor 280 suckers! ... but hey if you were able to get a good deal on one, then more power to you , but if you bought one for 650 haha I have no pity for you :p

maybe those pour souls were expecting the GTX200 would stay high for a few years like the 8800 GTX/ULTRA did.:D

Why would you"pity"someone who can afford to be cutting edge and blow $650 on a video card because they want to??:rolleyes:It seems the ones who couldnt do it bitch more than the ones that did do it..

I'm pretty sure all the early adopter's here know that lesson.

I couldn't agree more. Ti4200>6800GS OC>8800GTS(320) here so I've never had something insanely high end. The day I ordered my 280 I knew exactly what it meant but it's totally been worth every penny. It's depressing, and at times offensive, to see people on here trying to assign worth to someone else's purchase without any knowledge of what it means to the buyer.

Ps. First post, been reading since the beginning of the year. Nice to meet you all.

the GTX280 buyers remorse thread was a place for these early adopters to go and share thier pain with us.. shame its a dead thread

welcome to the forum.... we love all companies here.. NVDIA and ATi

Step one of a two step waiting period complete!
Step two: Intel price cuts on Q9550 to OEM $316 near the end of this month.

Step three? Buy buy buy.. finally!

Yes, I know nehalem is coming however I refuse to wait any longer. My AMD 2800+ POS needs an update, bad!

Hi Foxhound. Welcome!

Here's a quick summary of the phenomenon you're seeing. . .

There are people who have to scrimp and save to buy their gear. They wait and wait and make 110% sure that their money is being spent as wisely as possible. Sometimes, these people even fall into the camp of the "wait six months crowd" that never upgrade substantially because something better is always "six months away." These folks are usually just your average, nice people who just don't want to make a mistake and don't really begrudge anyone else their purchasing decisions.

But unfortunately, there is also a subset of those described above. These folks are bizarrely fixated on those who are able/willing to pay more. They seem to really have a hard time with the fact that some people don't agonize about needing to get a price adjustment on their hardware two weeks later or needing/wanting to ebay and trade up if something much better comes out a month or two afterwards. So, this strangely obsessed subset of otherwise fine folks, makes thread after thread, and post after post containing passive-aggressive attacks on those who they so clearly resent. All, of course, not-so-subtly disguised under a false cloak of smarmy "concern" and condescension. After all, why attack someone directly and call them "stupid" when you can "fly under the radar" and make post after post saying that you are oh-so-sorry that they stupidly bought something that you never would have bought.

But in the end, what we usually end up with are people quietly and unassumingly enjoying their top-end equipment while those that are bizarrely fixated on the spending habits of others work out whatever jealousy or inadequacy issues they've probably had from childhood via thinly veiled trolling.

I hope that clears things up. ;)

Your forgot the other type of buyer. The educated one who just doesn't agree with you. You know, the ones that you troll constantly but don't actually have the verbal or intellectual acumen to take on directly. So instead you make your lame little posts in every possible thread feigning sympathy and avoiding actually saying anything of substance. Rather, you just assert that you're right and oh-so-cleverly call people "idiots" without getting in trouble because you (again, oh-so-cleverly) put "nv" in front of the word. Anyone who doesn't agree with you or your troll-ish ways is told that they are a fanboy. Yet I'm switching to an Intel-based motherboard and offloading a GTX 280 so that I will be more flexible come 4870 X2 time. This decision has been made easier for me not by your one-sided view of the facts, but by my favorite game having SLi issues.

So, I go with whichever company suits my needs best. And I'm aware of what's available and what is likely to be available in the near-future. And I can still clearly see that you are a troll. As do most who aren't troll-o-philes themselves.

Have patience. You've been banned before. I assume you will be banned again (ideally on a permanent basis). It's just a matter of you finally pissing off the wrong people or the right people finally taking notice of your blatant disregard for basic decency and several of the forum rules. My guess is that those who would ban you actually find your antics entertaining. But they'll get bored of you eventually. Or you'll end up on the wrong side of an argument using the same tactics. . . and you'll be out.

I mean, look at yourself. You quote someone in your sig praising yourself for a thread that got you temp-banned for its blatant trolling. That's, well, what trolls do.

You can try to give people good advice without name-calling and making blatantly antagonistic troll-posts intended only to stroke your own ego and demean those who have a different perspective. I'd say about 10% of your posts are purely informative. The rest are intended to stoke people's ire. Most have just learned to ignore you. As I once had. And now I'll start doing so again.

I don't tend to feed trolls. And you've gotten too much of a belly-full from me already.

If anything, you're sorta. . . sad.

your gorgeous Mr. POPE

so far only gigabyte has a 450$ GTX280. we need Evga XFX, BFG!

btw lemonheads rock.

Im not gonna lie, i love reading your responses to him, but...if he is ignored and no one produces the response he's after...he'll probably go away.

Again with the insults...

I dont follow any of your crap, and ive got a plenty speedy rig, and more than change in my pocket.

I picked up the MSI gtx280 for $460 (after MIR). What sucks is my hx620 PSU doesn't have the 8 pin pci-e cable I need, so I had to buy a new PSU to get one in a timely manner.... and while I sit wait for that to show up, my still unused gtx280 has already depreciated $50.

But then after making a cash offer for $69k on a new Lotus this weekend (which they declined), the $$$ situation with video cards seems pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

rabident, can i be your long lost son who you send money to once a month to upgrade my computer so we can 'stay in contact' plz

nissan me and u dont get along.... but i am still trying to reach out 2 u in friendship

u seem to be a good guy

HX620 does have an 8-pin PCIE.
In fact, it has two.

Indeed. it should have 2x 6+2 PCI-e cables.. or if yours is really old, still 2x 8pin PCI-e cable.

If not, msg RedBeard or take a walk over to the PSU section.

I just recieved an HX620 today, and all it had was 2x 6pin PCIe cables. Is there an adapter or something?

Everyone forgets my classification:
The Purchaser That Knows Way More Than You with Deep Pockets. ;)

I'm very, very not interested in purchasing or reselling nVidia right now - especially since the PNY Quadro exclusivity is a total screwjob anyways. This cut is not a wise move on nVidia's part from a purely financial perspective. It is not going to result in a significant increase in sales, and those sales will be lower margin or even at loss.
When they're about to get utterly slammed for the G84/G86 fiasco, to put it mildly, it's a really bad move. At the first hint of a class action lawsuit against HP, Dell, or Lenovo over the known defective parts, they're going to practically throw the confidential documents from nVidia detailing the blunder at opposing counsel. At which point they're largely in the clear, and have just thrown nVidia - along with their stock - under a speeding bus.
