Just got 3 new Toshiba drives in from Newegg, no clue if this is a new norm, but I like it a lot more than what they have been doing. Sorry for the phone pics.

Edit: Sticker on the static bag even says "Made in China by Hitachi Global Storage Products," nice.
 
That is not new for newegg (I sometimes received that sort of packing more than a year ago). But what you get varies between which newegg warehouse it shipped from, when it shipped, and probably which drive(s) you ordered.
 
No matter the number of drives ordered they've always sent me the standard bubble wrap BS.
 
That's some nice packaging but as others said, it varies, in the past I've gotten bad drive packaging from Amazon even. I'm not sure where everyone typically gets their drives from these days. Been a while since I've ordered drives online, last one I bought I got locally right after the floods (before the stores had jacked up prices).

Slightly unrelated but terrible packaging (and luck) actually saved a Bluetooth device I ordered the other day... I was on the roof when the postman came by and I actually saw the retard fumbling to squeeze the package into my mailbox before he (and this really threw me for a loop) looked both ways like a child who's about to do something bad and then squeezed/crunched it on one end with both hands before putting it into the mailbox (so that it'd fit, standard mailbox w/curved top).

I actually had to brace the mailbox with one foot and tug at it with both hands to yank it out. Luckily the product box was on the other end of the package box and all he squeezed into were a couple of air bags. Kind of retarded it arrived in pristine condition all the way to Puerto Rico and then the postman mutilates the box in front of my house instead of knocking at the door.

I once got a replacement drive (for an RMA) from Hitachi using the packaging on the right. I even saved the packaging for the next time that I will need to RMA a drive. :D
 
I got the same packaging last time I ordered from Newegg.

I don't understand why people complain about Newegg's shipping. After all Newegg and its employees are not packaging engineers.

The problem lies with the manufacturer who does the packaging. Perhaps ordering retail packages would solve the problems that people complain about. But I guess those who complain just want to complain not solve their problems.

Newegg does the packaging for OEM drives, which is all anyone here really orders.
 
Newegg probably gets some of the OEM drives in crates with foam inserts that hold multiple drives, and they sometimes repackage those in nothing but a few layers of wrap around bubble wrap which easily goes flat in a box... Hence the complaints.

What an absurd thing to say. Those boxes and plastic endcaps are easily available fairly inexpensively to a volume shipper like newegg. It does not take an engineer to put on the endcaps and put the HDD in the fitted box. Given the number of OEM 3.5" HDDs that newegg ships, it should be standard procedure to train the packers to put the HDDs in those types of boxes.

Not to mention Newegg has some of the highest DOA's from customer reviews on HDD's than I've seen anywhere else on the Internet. This could be a packaging issue, or a shipping issue (USPS/UPS/FedEx) where they rarely treat something fragile (especially a hard drive) with the care it needs. Or a combination of both. When ordering drives online I've heard estimates placing it as high as 1 in 3 chance that it'll be DOA just from shipping alone damaging the heads.
 
My retail drives came like the new ones. To me this is new from Newegg since I always get bubble wrap. One reason I only ever order drives from Newegg if it's with other things I know will be shipped from the same warehouse.
 
My results with Newegg seem to be hit or miss, it doesn't matter which warehouse it comes from sometimes they are packed like shit and sometimes they are packed with care.
