DVL73 said:It can do it, no problem. As soon as you select 1280x1024 (or lower) resolutions, you may select the "expansion modes" from the NEC on screen menu. There are 3 expansion selection modes available via OSD (and I tested them via DVI input).Moose1309 said:That's a little disturbing, since I was planning on running non-WS-native games at 1280*1024 (which I guess is 5:4), with either no scaling, or scaled slightly to fill. Will it not do this? I suspect PCMag got a bad unit for review, if they couldn't scale 4:3 content.
- Full is stretching the image completely, so that whole screen is covered.
- Aspect is trying to simulate the monitor wide-screen aspect rate 16:10 on the selected resolution. It's stretched little bit, but there are still black bars left/right but not at the top (as far as I can see).
- Off is disabling any picture scaling processing. Resolution is natural as it should be. It's sharp and unaltered in any way. And, yes, there are tiny black bars on top/bottom and larger ones on left/right. Monitor is able to scale the picture for the resolutions of 1280x1024 and under.
Is US version any different ?

I'll quote what I've read from DVL73 on another forum, about this monitor's scaling:
Hope it helps.

Thanks
grimble said:well, I finally caved... I just ordered the NEC 20WMGX2 from pcnation.com. Under order status it's been at verifying address for almost 48 hours now cmon!
NicoTak said:Concerning the scaling:
I use the DVI-D.
I set Win Xp in 1280*1024.
Opening OSD of the monitor and going to "tools".
There's an "expansion mode" menu there. with three options: FULL, ASPECT and OFF.
FULL stretches the image to completely fit the screen, it is quite blurry due to rescaling. No black bars around the picture.
ASPECT keeps the screen ratio intact but stretches the picture to fit it vertically. A bit blurry too due to the slight rescaling. No black bars on top/bottom but large black bars on left/right side are present.
OFF is not touching at all the picture size and quality. It is a 1:1 pixel ratio. There is large black bars on left/right (1280 vs 1680 = 400/2 pixels) and little black bars on top/bottom (1024 vs 1050 = 26/2 pixels).
Tried also this with games and it works as it should.
I'm from belgium (central europe) and it is the 20WGX² version, without the built-in tv-tuner. That version is not sold in europe, due to some crappy laws...
If someone can verify that it is the same for the US version, that would be maybe helpful for some people.

Great! ... and such effort! to import the 20WMGX2 from the USkilly3000 said:Just got my 20WMGX2 and it rocks! No backlight bleeding or dead pixels that i can see and it has far and away the best picture i have ever seen on an LCD monitor!
I'm not quite following you. You are working with the NEC (US ?) on the "public" firmware for the new monitor revision, but on the other hand you are releasing your "own" firmware version (and NEC will give you the firmware ?!) so that you may release it to the public ... so I guess that we just have to "firmware flash" our monitors somehow ?!BitchBreaker said:Guy's with the NEC 20WMGX2 keep your eye's here in about a month im working with NEC on a public firmware they will use in the new revision of this monitor, it has some nicer option's and a few extra little spiff's, Ill be releasing my version of there firmware with a few other mod's
So ... what exactly is wrong with the current firmware and what improvements do we need or may expect ?! Is this only for 20WMGX2 or European 20WGX2 version is also included? I've never heard that you can flash any firmware for any LCD manually, so if your statements are honest, this must be the breakthrough ... no doubt.BitchBreaker said:I work with NEC on new hardware, review's, beta testing..and so on...im making us a better firmware based off there new firmware for these monitor's and ill show ya how to flash the firmware on your own
It's just slight overdrive overshoot (as I explained above). Apart from movie playback (slight pixel flashing/noise), it's not noticeable in other working modes ... so no reason to worry about. Generally, any LCD (even LCD TV) with overdrive is suffering from video noise (twinkling) to some extent. Solution is that you watch your movies from the distance, which is somewhat normal.WickedWeasel said:Tom's Hardware latency graphs are a great way to see the actual response of the LCD panels. The NEC20WG latency curve looks like crap on the left side. Is the left side just shades of gray and won't be as noticeable?
LOL ... well don't watch your movies from the close proximity (that's the solution) - or even better, maybe it's time for more practice - less watching.WickedWeasel said:The review on video playback is disappointing since I plan to watch porn on the LCD!
JohnleMVP said:I took some pix of DOA4 (XBOX360) on the monitor. The pics don't do it justice because I think the best part is the rich color of the monitor. This is my brothers monitor, I'm tempted to get one but the lack of aspect ratio modes is holding me back because it makes XBOX360 games aspect ratio slightly distorted.
