Was looking at i4u.com and saw an article for a new modular power supply.

sin-tek.com

Comes in 500W and 600W versions in both silver and black. I don't know how this PSU stands up, but maybe we'll see reviews before long. All of the online retailers listed on its website do not carry it yet.

Seems like a good PSU except it doesn't seem to be ATX 2.0 compliant. Features and looks are to be commended IMO. I just bought my Seasonic S12 600W, but I wish it was modular.

What do you guys think? Does it seem promising?

The specs look decent, and they even included a temperature spec of 41C!!! If it meets specs, it may be a decent modular. The voltage trim pots are going to be too easy to bump out of spec, and some of the features look a bit gimmicky. Let's see a review.

The 600W has all it's extra power added solely to the +5V.

That's pretty weird...

BTW, anyone know if this is a rebrand?

Letter to Performance-PC's:

Gentlemen,

I saw the SinTek on the front page of the site. The label or box for that thing doesn't happen to have a UL number on it, does it?

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!
Jon

Got a reply back from Hank (that was quick.)

There's no UL number anywhere on the PSU or box. :(

again Id say its an accident waiting to happen without knowing the range of those adjustable rails

and the obvious:
Its an ATX12V v1.3 priced at a high quality AYTX12V v2.01 pricepoint with lots of eye candy

serious investigation is merited

Well.. the game plan for me now is to sell off some more PSU's and buy a Hitec and Sintek. I might have to raise my prices a little. :D

Here is for hoping

You know... I was thinking this thing was a Youngyear and I couldn't quite put my finger on why I felt it was. There was just something about it that seemed "familiar."

Maybe because I had a good night sleep or something, but this morning it dawned on me.

I THOUGHT that aluminum housing, two fans, speed controller and little window looked familiar. I actually had one of these once, but never had the chance to review it because I took it apart BEFORE load testing it. The housing goes together really funky (the ends actually screw on like caps) and I didn't get it quite put together correctly after taking photos of it. When I fired it up, it blew up from one of the PCB or wires shorting. It was quite spectacular.

Anyhoo... Now that I know that, I have to say Ice Czar is right. You're talking about a single-12V-rail PSU with rails that don't have tight enough regulation for those knobs to be considered "safe" And if it's crossload is anything like any of the other Youngyear 500W and up PSU's I've used.. LOOK OUT Socket A users! :D

Rips the knobs off and cut the price in half and maybe... just maybe... And if I get another one I'll make sure to load test it BEFORE breaking the "Warranty Void" sticker.

So based on the apparent assumption that this is a bad PSU.... has anyone tried one yet ?

I never said it was bad. Just not recommended.

Certainly a bit overpriced. And the pentiometers (pots) open up a Pandora's Box of potential problems (that was almost a tongue twister.)

I'd just say; if you REALLY like the looks of this thing and have that kind of money burning a hole in your pocket and feel you just have to have it, make sure you have a PC that's not going to crossload the thing (no Socket A's, people.) and dial in the pots at idle. NEVER under load or your'll peak your tolerance when the PC is idle. And always use a UPS with AVR regardless of who makes whatever power supply.

Steve and Kyle need to strap one of these to the review bench and make it bleed....... ;)

Total POS & at a high price too boot!

I don't know what is wrong with jonnyGURU these days, he is just too damn polite! :D

EDIT:

If you don't see it recommended here, don't even consider it! :)

What the hell happened to the forums??? I couldn't get on for like a half hour. :(

as you might catch here and there is a sig or two

this isn't a court of law, PSUs are assumed guilty until proven innocent

being that they are the one component capable of frying all the rest
and "trying" a PSU isn't going to tell one alot either,
the best that can generally be said is it didnt blow that config that day for that set of variables (load, VAC & Temp)

either someone competant gets their hands on it to do a real review (a very short list IMO)
or a fairly large amount of people need to push it without an anomolous number of failures
anything else is more "faith" than science

I prefer constructive criticism over complete condemnation. ;) Besides, I've got two PCs here that've been running with Youngyear based units for over a year, and I'm afraid if they hear me say something bad they'll release some bad ju-ju on me. :D

You are right, post something constructive, ok.

I believe that once you remove the useless guts from the PSU case,
that the PSU case can be used for something constructive, like a squirel feeder! ;)

Leave the guts and cook the squirel :D

jonnyGURU: If I insult it will you review it?

I think the new PC P&C 1KW PSU is a total POS!

Now let's see you load it, so you can test it! :p

Actually, I'm trying to get some funds together for one of those, a Hiper and a TP-II 550. Bunch of stuff up on eBay right now. :D
