New Mass Effect

Hmm this could go either way. Combat should be much better but I don't know how the voice conversations will turn out. UE3 can render some really nice up close facial animations and quality.

I think with this one EA will just say F it, let's just make ME the cover-based shooter we've always wanted and ditch all of that extra crap. Probably some token conversation to reduce criticism, but 90% of it will be through non-interactive cutscenes.

I for one look forward to Commercial Effect 44 1/4 and all the wonderful gun skins I can purchase with it. I hope they withhold a really mysterious amount of content so I can get excited about pre-ordering.

ME3 is good. It's only the crappy Earth part (ending) that got me. Most of it felt epic.

Yup. Except for couple of dumb lines in the beginning, the game is pure gold from start to almost finish. Only the ending is a complete trainwreck. With Extended Cut its still a complete trainwreck, just with few survivors this time. :D

This is good to hear. I just started playing through the series again to refresh myself on the story / lore and finally play the last game that I snagged cheap over the summer.

Ah, I knew a Hepler growing up.

I'm not seeing where she says she hates games & gamers in that article. Only that a lot of it was falsified.

she'd made a comment in an interview a million years ago that actually playing the games was not for her because the writing was always overshadowed by the gameplay which is true. Theres a few exceptions to the rule like Enslaved : Odyssey to the west which is an awesome game btw.

A lot of console tards attributed the exceptional amount of LGBT material in DA and DA2 to her, but fuck'm they're the same idiots that will buy anything labeled 59.99 because it must be good if it costs that much.

It wasn't exactly just her commenting that writing is overshadowed by gameplay, but that games should play like movies and have less interactivity. Her writing is also poor.

There has been a lot of quests in BioWare's recent games that drove me crazy & the character interactivity did make it seem like a yaoi flick had landed when I ordered no such damn thing. I'll be highly cautious about any future games BioWare releases after DA2 & ME3. If she's to blame entirely for it, I know not but BioWare fails to deliver strong stories as of late.

There's no way Bioware's failings fall solely on the shoulders of one writer. That's ridiculous.

I'm taking a wait and see approach to this new Mass Effect game. I didn't mind ME3, though it definitely had it's faults, but to make more of them just seems like milking the franchise. It could turn out OK though, but we'll see.

Oh... if the story for DA and DA2 was her, then yea... I hate her stories. The game play far out performs the stories. 2 especially. The game play was fun though the spawns were horrid (and revisiting of the same fucking dungeon over and over again). But the combat in both were good stuff, imo.

In the same light, she has no right to make such a comment, when/if her writing is terrible.

Correct. We can't blame Hamburger Hepler for everything that's wrong with the most recent Bioware games. She is just a small part of the problem.

I said "I know not". Don't misconstrue what I said since I know there's no way that one person is the nexus of failure.

Her writing is also poor.

A lot of the comments thrown her way were way over the top... not surprising given the groupthink of gaming communities. But I agree with you there. In particular, I remember she had a quote talking about the gay subplot in ME3 (Steve), and how it was gonna be a highlight you won't wanna miss (I'm paraphrasing here). I don't have any problem with there being a gay subplot, considering how romance heavy Bioware's games since ME1 have been... but it was absolute garbage. You could take a couple of random lines of dialog from Sovereign and have it sound as loving and heartfelt as the crap dialog from that. Considering that she was personally so proud of that bit of the story, her writing must suck.

Also, I disagree with the notion that ME3 was awesome besides the ending. It was good, yes, but dialog options were stripped down to a bare minimum, and there were those awful child dream sequences. The combat was good, but the level design was much better in ME2. I wasn't a fan of the gauntlet style side missions where you are essentially playing the multiplayer but with bots and flimsy plot motivations.

My thoughts exactly.

Her writing sucks, I agree.

However, I disagree with your disagreement to my assessment of ME3. While the talking wasn't spectacular, and the level design in 2 was better. I don't feel that ME3 did a bad job of it at all. I prefer ME2's level but I think ME3's levels was only slightly less as good. But I guess nothing in ME3 beats shoving a guy out the window. Even the miss and counter.

The thing about the child dream sequences could've been something good. Annoying for a multiple playthrough, but it was only til the end that I felt... that was all that dream crap was about?

Hey, if the dream stuff worked for you then great. But right from the first time I saw the shuttle get shot down in the demo, I just did not like how they attempted to pull at your emotions with this random, nameless, insignificant child. It flat out did not work for me. I think the idea of the dream sequences was okay... but they should have used people you actually care about... such as the characters you've been interacting with for two whole games.

I also thought the Citadel quests in ME3 were generally pretty dull... mostly go to X location and click on X object. I was shocked you didn't get a little target mini-game when you're on that bridge with Garrus... just watching your character take shots... I mean, this is a game, right?

Having said all that, I still enjoyed the game quite a bit. I even enjoyed the Earth level at the end. I just think that the first game was the best of the series and it progressively went downhill even though they improved on certain things in the process.

Never said it couldn't be better, but I thought it was fine...... and also thought it'd finish better. Of course, it didn't and that just made me think the ending is even worst.

As for dullness... the ME2 DLC quest where you picked up tags...... HOLY CRAP that was boring. ALl the ME games had their fair share of meh quests though. Actually, I'd pretty much say all games has meh quests.

And the garrus thing... I don't know why you're annoyed by it. Would you have preferred a weird punching mini game to shove that guy out of the window?

If we're gonna talk about improvement... one that would've been great (I've thought about this endlessly through ME, more so than other games, though I have with other games as well) is that cutscenes varying depending on your class.

EDIT: Just wanted to add, I'm only stating my opinions, because I think it's a game that's worth playing through, and I think too many people emphasize on the ending being utterly trash that they think the entire game as trash.

Of course. I just think ME3 had a higher share of dull quests than ME2, which I'd guess is a sign of a rushed release.

As for the Garrus thing, I think we might be thinking of different scenes. I was referring to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zluVsjkzyqo. It's a small thing... but how can you have a shooting contest in a shooting game and not actually let the player shoot?! I suspect pre-EA Bioware would have done just that, but I'm just speculating.

And I agree with you about the game vs. the ending. I think the quality of ME3 is very uneven throughout, but the highs are really good. Like the scene with Tali on Rannoch. Overall the game is definitely worth playing.

I like this game , and I played the first two parts and it was very interesting for me .
I didn't play the third part yet , but I will pay it..

I count those child dream sequences as part of the ending, really. :D And yes, the lack of dialog options sucked badly. Not only did it force you to be either "lawful stupid" or "chaotic idiot" during those rare moments you actually do get a choice, but it also ruined some replayability to me. Middle ground options were sorely needed, even if some of them could backfire on you.

But still what is there is so emotionally gripping that I still get goose bumps about thinking of some stuff in there, OMG.

Can't lie, I'm interested. Particularly in Frostbite 2.

Might equate to one of the most visually spectacular science fiction games when it's released. That much it may gain credit for. As for the rest, we shall see...

Exactly. And I'll admit to being a sucker...after the ME3 ending which spoiled an absolutely fantastic game up to that point, and DA2 being shitty (although it did have some strong points), I probably would have waited to purchase these. But on Frostbite 2, I can't wait to see it and both the new ME and DA3 will probably be day 1 purchases. May the gaming gods have mercy on my soul. ;)

I just finished the first Mass Effect last night, hoping I can snag ME2 and ME3 on a sale over the holidays.
The individual prices got raised everywhere recently because of the ME trilogy EA just released.

The story is what I like most about this game, so long as the story and writing stays good I'll probably keep on going down the line.

ME2: Gameplay improved overall, but regressed in some ways. Story quality nosedived from ME1. Made up of character-focused side stories (which still had plot holes) and no coherent grand/epic plot like in ME1. Raised serious questions that interfered with the coherence of even ME1's plot (if you take ME2 as canon...you could always decide ME ended with ME1 in your world).

ME3: Gameplay regressed overall, but improved in some ways. Story became utterly nonsensical (from the very beginning) and the ending was so bad that even someone who expects plot holes and imperfection from games (like me), but was still strongly connected to the story / characters, cannot stand ME anymore. The ending destroyed what little coherence the trilogy's plot / atmosphere / theme had left. I read all the complaining (avoided spoilers) about ME's ending before I even began playing it, and I figured there was probably a lot of truth to the complaints while at the same time some exaggeration. I didn't even play it until after the Extended Cut was added. I was still utterly shocked that it was THAT bad once I got there. I could not believe that the final cutscenes were happening, and the longer they went on, the worse it got.

There was no exaggeration in the complaints :(

Have to offer a different take here:

ME2: Gunplay drastically improved. ME1's terrible inventory management was overcorrected, going too minimal on upgrades/inventory. Enjoyed the character driven story, thought the ending and overall storyline was still epic in scale.

ME3: Hit the sweet-spot on inventory management. Gunplay continues in the vein of ME2, very good. The rolling from cover to cover was a bit overdone. Story is excellent up until the last 5% of the game. Character interaction however seems to have gotten worse; rather than cut scenes and interaction on the ship, much of it is just in-game, one-sided conversation where your crew members talk at you. Overall could have been one of the all-time great games, if not for screwing the pooch on the last mission and ending of the story. As an idea of how bad it was, I actually couldn't get it out of my head for approximately 3 days, even crappy dreams about it. Re-played ME2 several times. Since trying a half-hearted 2nd replay of ME3, haven't touched it again, haven't even bothered to watch the Extended Cut that was released afterwards.

The main plot of ME2 was pretty lousy, and the final boss a complete joke from a story perspective... but the side-plots were excellent... best in the series.

You're forgetting the gawd-friggin-awful textures used everywhere throughout. Faces are the only thing in game that don't look like pixelated dawg shit.
