Two weeks ago one of my friends gave me a Mac for free. It is a Powermac G4 dual 450. The computer came without ram or an original CD rom. So after going to OWC.com i bought some ram, and i thought that I was good to go. Unfortunelty i cannot get it to install a Operating system (mac osx / yellow dog). Since it didnt have a cd drive i tried to boot from an external usb one i had and it worked! sort of. It tries to install osx but after the apple logo the spinning wheel keeps going and going and the screen houses a black text box where the prompt should be. It doesnt seem to get past that point.

PS: Should i see a list of hard drives installed when i press the option button on startup?
It just displays the arrows on each side.

Edit: is there a problem with installing from a usb cd drive? i have another mac, but no firewire cord

Thanks, Pbrane

you would probably have better luck booting from an external firewire optical drive. also, as dtm said you could pull the optical drive out of the external enclosure and install it in the computer.

"the black text box where the prompt should be." does it say "the computer must be restarted" in four different languages?

and no, you won't see any hard drives when you push the option key at startup unless you have a bootable hard drive in the computer.

No, it doesnt have any text at all inside the box. Im gonna grab a firewire cable later today and try to connect it with my other mac to see if that helps.

PBrane, if you live near an Apple store, give them a visit. My son recently went through a similar situation, but the "Genius" at the store installed an updated version of the operating system and the problem was solved. The service was free. Good luck.
