Hey I heard from the grapevine that Intel is putting out new processors that are 50% faster than the Conroe's? Can anyone Clairify?

dont think its 50% faster i think it was around 15% clock for clock? :confused: *From the rumors and benches ive seen online*
 
Yeah, a new core codenamed Penryn is coming out, first for servers in Oct-Nov and an extreme version for desktops by the end of the year. More desktop chips are supposed to follow in early 2008.

It has 50% more cache, but it's not 50% faster. It's a tweaked Conroe on 45nm with much reduced power leakage. It has very low idle power consumption and load power consumption is also somewhat reduced vs rev G Conroes. It has improved performance per clock over Conroe, but nothing too great in general (SSE3 swizzle has been improved significantly, and cache latency reduced by 1 cycle). Higher clock speeds are mostly what is going to make it faster.

It also includes a new set of 47 SIMD instructions called SSE4.1. Those instructions do help with certain applications like video encoding which is 100% faster using a SSE4 build of Divx 6.6.

At equal clock speeds, about 15% faster clock-for-clock, though some have said it's up to 20%. As far as stock speeds, he's right, the first Penryn is due at 3.33ghz, so compared to a Core 2 @ 2.4ghz such as the E/Q6600's, the stock Penryn will be 50%+ faster. They're also supposed to ramp in clock speeds better than the Core 2's, both in overclocking and normal product lines, due to their 45nm architecture.

What are we talking about speed-wise, 4ghz range? Or is that a little optimistic?

This is exactly why I have had a new build planned for when penryn/phenom/g92 comes out sometime around novemberish.

Conroe while a decent upgrade, wasn't enough of one to justify the cost for me.

I suspect either nov/dec will be when I build a kick ass new quad with NV's new MB/chipset and graphics card. Woot! Can't wait.

Not all Prescotts were that bad. The almost 3 year old G revisions were all 84W-89W up to 3.4GHz and I've seen the 84W versions bumped up to 4GHz with less than +0.1v voltage increases. It's not cool as Cedar Mill, but it puts TDP of the G1 Prescotts running at 4GHz at "only" 110-140W.

But that's not much of an accomplishment. You can take a 65W Cedar Mill P4 3.4GHz to 4GHz under 80W TDP, or a Pentium D 925 (Presler) to 4GHz under 130W TDP. I have a spare Presler laying around because it was so cheap, but I wouldn't buy either of those chips for a main system. ;) Conroe and X2 EE chips are just so cheap now.
 
Im no expert (by any means) but the quads are building up enough heat that older heatsinks with great reviews for dual cores aren't sucking the heat off well enough. So.... it makes me wonder if there will have to be another wave up heatsink upgrades or will they manage to make them effecient enough to keep the heat down so that a Tuniq tower or Ninja, etc can handle them with some moderate overclocking.

It also makes me wonder how long it will be before there are mainstream OEM watercooling solutions.

Quads get hot, but they're designed to take the heat. People worry too much.
