I doubt that will happen this year but the other offerings look interesting.They still need to get a six core out to the masses for around $500.
I'm thinking after the holidays we should be able to pick up 970's for under $500
its intel you really think thats going to happen? they have no competition and they have proved they will wait as long as they have to before dropping prices on stuff.. i mean hell even their lowest end i7 920 sells for 200 dollars still.. so i wouldnt expect an i7 6 core to hit 500 dollars any time soon unless its insanely gimped.. maybe the 700 dollar range but thats about as low as i see it going until AMD releases the bulldozer some time next year..
and another note thats 1000 unit tray pricing.. so expect the retail price to be in the mid 900's when they first release..

$865 for the 6 core i7 970? What in the hell are they thinking? It seems like people who are willing to spend that kind of money for a processor will just spend a little more and go for the fully unlocked Gulftown 980x.

I hear it overclocks very well too.
Their yeilds must be utter crap for the 6 cores! They wont sell many at that price point, and I doubt they would sit on a mountain of chips.
$300 is my personal max for any CPU. I paid that for my 600mhz coppermines (dual cpu), my 3.4ghz P4, and my W3520. So unless I get some finacial winfall I doubt i'll ever justify some super high end cpu. I might consider the 6 core if it was $400 or lower, otherwise![]()
because thats exactly what they want people to do.. price it near the 980x and people will usually end up spending the extra money to get the 980x instead because they will think its a better processor then the 970 even though its not..
AMD has a couple of 6 cores right in your price range. However, it is likely that we will never see any Intel 6 cores in that price range for the forseeable future. They are complete monsters, and Intel has no need to price them that low. If they would do it, then AMD is in trouble.
Except the 980x is fully unlocked and thus a better processor. My local Micro Center has tons of AMD Thuban 1055T's, but sell out of the 1090T's as soon as they get them in. I suspect that people are spending the extra cash not just for the higher clock speeds, but also to get a fully unlocked processor. Right now, i'm debating on whether I should upgrade my gaming rig with a Thuban and bring it online to fold full time when i'm not using it for other stuff.
been proven time and time again that unlocked processors means nothing on intel processors where as its very important on AMD processors well up until the 8xx series boards came out which has made the unlocked multiplier a mute point since they overclock exactly the same now.. but thats the biggest difference between overclocking on amd and intel..
yes you should upgrade to the thuban if your motherboard supports it.. thuban at 4ghz avg's between 14-15k PPD on the A3 WU's compared to the quads that do 7500-8000 if your lucky and can hit 4 ghz on your processor.. not to mention the thubans run way cooler then the quads..

What about improving the cooling system of this computer? Dropping temperatures on the components that get hot will also lower temperatures where the computer is located, thus indirectly helping the AC unit because ambient room temperatures will then be lower. Everything has an aggregate effect on temperature, thus cooling down one thing more efficiently will lower temps everywhere else. Conversely, increasing the temperature by a few degrees on one component will also have a domino effect on everything else eventually translating to higher ambient temps in its location.I'm already doing that, but my gaming rig is on the top floor of the house and the window unit is unable to keep up on a hot summer day. Even with it on full blast, room temps can hit mid 80's and higher when the sun is directly overhead. This circuit is also almost completely tapped out and is unable to accomodate any stronger window unit above the 8000BTU unit currently there. If I do go this route, i'll definately sell you my quad P2 965 for cheap. Best of all, it is only overclocked to 3.5ghz, so it has never been abused.

Another tip on hot days is placing a pedestal fan several feet away from the AC in the air flow, and rotating the fan to point in the most effective direction to cool the floor it's on. This is one of the cheapest and best solutions to increase AC efficiency I know of. For ~$20, you can lower room temperatures by propelling the cool AC air much further, and in effect multiplying the capacity of the unit without getting a new one, and for a minimal amount of increased power draw. It sounds like something that seems too simple to be effective but it actually is.
I actually already have a fan just as you described. I have it in front of the air conditioner and blowing air towards me. My gaming rig is in a HAF932 case, so it has plenty of cooling. There isn't a whole lot you can do as you are still heating the room, and that cannot be changed. Nothing in my computer really runs hot at all as I only barely overclock my cpu to 3.5 ghz from 3.4.

weak.. just cut a hole in the ceiling/roof and vent the heat out that way and overclock that poor processor.. its begging for it..
I have been considering a Noctua NH-D14 cooler, which is that monster dual fan tower cooler than TJ runs on his Gulftown. However, there is little reason to upgrade the cooling on my current Deneb as I have no desire to run it that hard. If I do decide to get a Thuban, then that will be a different story.

no reason to even go with a heatsink that big for an amd processor.. xig s1283, sunbeam core contact do perfectly fine on the phenom II's at 3.8-4ghz..
