New i7 - Benchmarking Issues

Built a new i7 machine this weekend (first timer). I am running a few benchmarks and am having issues with two. I read a forum in the CPU board but it mentioned a hotfix which I have. So here is the issue. Any help is appreciated:

PC Mark05 - runs 7 of 11 tests. Completes, but no score, not sure why some tests are failing.

3DMark Vantage - runs 3 of 4 tests, stalls on the 4 test which tests the CPU for the second time. This is the Physix test.

Note: 3D Mark 06 ran fine and scored 14500 however, may not be related

Prime95 - runs along with RTHDribL, hasn't crashed, but I haven't gone more then twenty. But the real issue is the CoreTemp test which shows the CPU maxed at 100% and the temperature of the cores at 95-100 degrees, which is worrisome.

Side Note: 120mm Fans: Any thoughts on the extra two fan placements for making the case cooler?

Last Side note: I played Oblivion for 30 minutes no problem and averaged 60 FPS even outside while battling

i would recommend manually setting your memory timings, along with memory voltage in your bios specifically to what you're running as a start.

Without reading the rest of your post, the above may be your problem. And even if it isn't the cause of your current benchmarking problems, it is still a problem that needs to be fixed. I suggest you remount your heatsink, using a thin coat of TIM over the entire chip. I also suggest you avoiding any fancy TIM techniques such as putting a tiny dot or line and hoping it somehow covers the entire chip.

Yep, the chip throttles at 100C. It's overheating. Set the rear and top fans to exhaust. Not sure about the side fan, but I assume it should blow air right on the CPU.

is speedfan more reliable temp wise then coretemp?? coretemp is showing 90 - 100 degrees in the cores during prime95, but speed fan is showing 78 - 85 degrees. i'm confused.

even if unreliable, the margin of error still says you're too hot. Take some pictures of your computer (inside) and post them. Maybe we'll see something you don't.

use realtemp. its dead on. use the latest beta, which is at the bottom of the first post.

On my p6t/i7 build the latest realtemp beta and coretemp provide exactly the same values. Pick one, they're identical. I prefer realtemp's interface a bit.

Speedfan uses the motherboard's sensors. It's reliable in that it's consistent and provides a real value, but it doesn't measure the temperatures that everybody on these forums uses so it's of limited use. Also speedfan's "core" sensors are off on the i7. Don't use them either.

so by reseating the intel stock heat sink and using the artic silver 5 grain of rice / spread method, i used a lot of force to get the HSF secure.
i am now running idle between 33-39c degrees.

i launched 5 instances of prime95, one RTHDribl and the internet and the temp rose and leveled for over an hour at 77-82c degrees.

is this where I want to be with an intel stock HSF with the i7 920 (not oc'ing), or is this still too hot and running the risk of burning out the CPU?
