New HD wont Boot Xp PLEASE HELP

Memtest been running for 20hrs and 30mins. No errors how long i gotta let this thing run??
Others may have a different answer, but in my opinion, if you let it run that long with no errors, your memory most likely isn't the problem. Let me read through again to come up with the next step to try.

EDIT: The problem now is, you can boot to the desktop, but it locks up 3 second afterwards? Try booting into safe mode (hit F8) during the boot screen. If you can get into safe mode okay, the problem is likely a driver. Once in safe mode, uninstall all drivers you loaded and reboot. Load them again on at a time, rebooting after each one.

that seems fine to me. it's not your memory. now i'll go read your original post to try to figure out what the real problem is.

okay, after re-reading the entire thread, i still don't have a clear picture of what your current problem is.

if i have it correctly, you can't boot into Windnoes, right?

just post back and tell me the problem, i can't figure it out =\

My problem was originally I bought a new WD 160gb HD. I loaded windows on it and everything and it worked fine for a few days. THen it started lockin up on me. So i would reboot the computer then it woulod either freeze at the welcome screen or 4-5 seconds after the desktop loads. I recently tried repairing the copy of windows, that was working the last time i was in windows when I was figuring how to make a boot disk. Like i said it works for a day or 2 then shits the bed.

why not partition your hard drive (look at the link Papa-Ming mentioned to find a guide about that) and make an 8GB NTFS (that's the format of the hard drive) partition and install XP on that.

that should solve your problems (yes that means you have to reinstall Windnoes--there are guides for this in the sticky Papa-Ming mentionned, look for them.)

Gutlass Cutlass said:
Yea but how would that solve my problem?
i'm not sure, but i think the reason why your install is fubared is because Windnoes can't recognize a hard drive that big.

if you set up an 8GB partition, your install should be fine, and it should work fine. (Just like it did on your other 10GB HDD).

Whatever I'm willing to try it. i'm getting really mad now I was Playing Doom3 and it locked up on me again!!! i'm going nuts. How do i make the 8gb partition. I did this once but dont remember

How about checking to make sure your case isn't over-heating? Make sure the HSF on your processor is seated correctly and that the fans are spinning at a good speed.

I know thats not the prolem I know for sure. I had my computer overclocked to 3.2 and the temps never went about 32c. Do you think this could be due to the overclocking? I never had a problem till I tried to install the HD's

If you're going to try and assist people in this forum, you can take the time to spell Windows right. It's insulting to some of us who spend our career working with it.

We don't sit in the Linux forum and call in Linsux or something childish like that.

Thanks for your consideration. ;)

It's kind of like the people who sue to have the word God removed from government buildings, but yet they have no problem using money that has God printed on it. I am truly amazed at the number of people who complain about Microsoft and Windows, but still use them. I happen to like Windows XP, so I can still use it. :D

It's always been trendy for greenhorns to bash Microsoft, not sure why, but most grow out of it eventually.

shit dude, calm down...I use Windnoes also, i just like saying the word "noes"
don't take it personally.

The only reason i'm considering switching to *nix (and even so, it'll be a dual boot) is b/c of some security reasons (That have been beaten to a pulp in another thread).

I like saying Windnoes. deal with it.

Umm how do i do the partition???? So i can play Doom3 again
You reformat and re-install, as described above in the same post that recommends it. I can tell you right now that isn't going to solve the problem. If the problem was the size of the drive, it would have installed just fine, but only showed you as have a 137 GB drive.

I got both 160hd's readin Full amount. Do you think there can be a problem with my motherboard?? It's weird once it locks up once it wont boot after that. And I have to re-install Win XP and I do have a disk with SP2. This is really getting annoying is there like a Guru for this stuff that we can run this problem by?

we are the Gurus.

have you tried a LiveCD (of LInux), go try Knoppix (google it and download it, burn it to a CD just like you should have done with the memtest iso) and see if it works.

if it works, you hardware is probably fine.

Do what makes you feel good I guess. Some of us who have been around for a while just get annoyed by people who jump on the MS sucks bandwagon. Especially when it's obvious they use the product they supposedly hate.
I'm also trying to bring to your attention that when someone posts in the Windows forum and offers advice, they sound ignorant when they jump on the M$, Microshaft, Winblowz, etc bandwagon.

Each to his own though.

let's not start a flamewar, but to be honest, i generally try not to jump on bandwagons. Whatever i believe, if i believe it strongly, i generally have researched. I don't like to be wrong, or misinformed. My personal beliefs are that any large-scale deployment of a Closed Source enterprise is bad. That's personal, and i happen to express it in the *noes *$ manner, but that's what it is, personal.

For me, though, that doesn't mean everyone should get their knickers in a ball about it  :p

don't worry, i'm not the 12-y/o-AOLEr1! heh

What does this program do??

I found that program on Goggle but when i accept the user agreemeant it jsut shows me a directory of stuff, But no download link?

Have you tested your HDD using the manufacturer's diagnostics?
Have you installed all Windows updates including SP2?
I saw that you were overclocking before. Are you overclocking now?

if you google knoppix the first hit is Knoppix Linux Live CD.

After you click the American/British flag it takes you to the English version of the site.

where it tells you what Knoppix is:
Knoppix said:
KNOPPIX is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it.

then, after having scrolled down a whole two more mouse wheels, you click the Penguin on the CD with the word Download to go to the mirrors list

here it provides you with a list of mirrors to download from--choose one close to you physically. Assuming you're in the U.S., this one in Florida might be good for you.

after clicking that link, you have to click Accept, then download whatever the latest version is. you'll probably be looking for a link that says something like "x86"

and of course you want to download an *.iso

alternatively, you could go here to LinuxISOtorrent.com for BitTorrent access to Knoppix.

or, you could go to The Linux Mirror Project for more access to BitTorrent downloads.

i'm done, i want to eat dinner. i feel like a fucking Wikipedia article.

I may have missed some posts, but how is a live CD going to help his computer stop crashing?

You can't play Doom 3 off a live CD AFIK. :)

what the LiveCD will let us do is see if it's a hardware problem or not.

if Knoppix runs fine, then it's a software (read: he screwed up the Windows XP install) problem.

if Knoppix doesn't run fine, then it's a hardware problem (since we know it's not his RAM thanks to memtest, we can start testing other components...)

plus, if he can boot up in a LiveCD, we can test the CPU by running prime95

it runs fine for a while then crashes. I'm suspecting my MOBO cause now my ethernet adapter is starting to go screwy and now not workind and my onboard soundcard stop'd working. I havent downloaded that program cause it was workin fine for a few days and now its messin up again. I'm gonna take it a tech guy soon cause I gotta ge tback to backing up my DvDs
