Bought a New WD 160gb HD. Formatted it and installed Win XP pro (a copy) Everthing installs fineno problems. Untill it trys to boot off the HD itself. It Gets to the welcome screen then freezes. I"ve tried 2 different HD's both 160gbs to the same result. I tried installs a copy of XP home edition from my friends Dell Xp disk. Still nothing. Any ideas this is getting really annoying. Also if i install my old 40gb it will boot Win and see the 160gb and run apps off it no problem

is your 160GB drive a SCSI//SATA?

do you need special drivers for it? did it come with a floppy?

have you checked WD's website?

Didn't you have another thread about this already?

How did you format the hard drive, with the floppy/cd that came with the drive or during Windows XP Setup? If you did it with the floppy, take the disk and throw it out the window, it's crap and not needed on any newer PC. During the blue and white text of setup, delete any partitions on the drive and have setup partition and format the drive.

Also, what version of XP do you have? Service Pack 1, 2 or before Service Pack 1? If it's before SP1, slipstream Service Pack 2 onto it and use that to install Windows with. Pre SP1 had problems with drives that were over 120GB. There was a registry setting you had to add to enable big drive support. SP1 fixed that.

OK I got it to work. I installed Xp on an old 10gb HD. Then cloned it to the 160gb. All is pretty much well guys. And i'm also slipstreaming Sp2 to, that works great!!

$5 says that with SP2 slipstreamed into the CD you could install to the 160GB no problem now.

That's probably why. I'm betting he, for some reason, decided to make the whole 160 GB his C drive, and his pre-SP1 installation wouldn't accept it. Which also explains why the 10 GB worked.

ok, i'm having a new problem. THe comptuer boots to the desktop then locks up 3 seconds after that. Any Ideas. I have all the latest updates. This is getting really annoying!!!

Did you install SP2? If your system isn't up to date it will have trouble detecting any HDD larger than 127GB.

You really should have slipstreamed SP2 and installed off that. You wouldn't be having these issues if you did.

Red the post above, I fixed that problem already. I faced with a new one. Can I run memtest in dos? Cause I cant seem to get windows to load past the welcome screen? Also where can I get memtest?

Might want to read my signature. It never hurts to just open up Google and search for something. You'll find a ton of download sites, and you have the option of making a bootable floppy or a bootable CD. Just download the one you want.

Yea, I dont see what the problem is there? If I dont know where to find it and you do would it kill you to say go here or go there? Maybe you have a better website with more programs then the one I found. Also I CANT BOOT WINDOWS so I cant run a windows based program.

Don't be another noobie with an attitude. I clearly stated above that you could download a bootable floppy or CD image. In the time it took you to post that smartass reply, you could have it downloaded already. This isn't an ass-wiping or hand-holding site. We work WITH you, not FOR you. If you want help, drop the attitude, and work with us.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Memtest

First hit. Took all of 4 seconds.

btw, memtest has never been, and most likely never will be, a Windows based program.

dumbass. google is your friend

there's a difference between "Google-whoring" (just saying GOOGLE to every question posted), and getting someone to be able to be self-sufficient. This forum should be a place where people who need help can post--in order for them to get it, they have to be able to help themselves.

Ok, I tried repairing WinXp, It boots to windows now and i'm running memtest. Question. If the problem was my ram would it do it all the time? Or would it do it infequently??

wha?
so you can boot into windows, but right now you're not in windows because you're running memtest, right?

at any rate, it depends. memory issues can be very interesting--sometimes problems can occur consistantly, sometimes not. so it depends on how the gods of RAM are feeling towards you at any given moment. it's the nature of the beast (read the memtest documentation if you want to find out more)

No I downloaded Memtest for windows. Look if you guys have a specific memtest program that you use religously just tell me what is it. SO I dont download the wrong one then you guys be like, Why you using that one its crap.

Ok that you very much I will do what you say with these programs. I dont mean to be rude, But i'm a novice I can handle most things but these problems are getting to be over my head. And I'm beggining to get very frustrated at this point.

np man, we were all there at one point, i understand how you feel.

gl and post back with your results! btw, you should let memtest run overnight to be sure of no instability...

just use whatever cd-burning software you have, even the built in WIndnoes one can do this, just copy the *.iso file to your CD-R disc

just copy the iso file, that's all you need to do -- it's already bootable

OK i did what you said and it wont boot from the cd. I have it set up First boot is off the cd-rom. But when it says boot from cd hit any key. It goes to Hardware Profile/ configuration Recovery menu. Says choice a profile then boots win normally?? Am I just retarted??

sounds like it. check the memtest page i linked you to again for help

try making a floppy instead. for me it wouldn't work off a CD, but it worked off a floppy.

remember, you have to change your BIOS settings to boot from CD (or floppy) first.

OK , i cant seem to get this boot disk down. I tried copying the ISO to a floppy disk. And it tells me that its too big for the floppy disk. Am i copying the right ISO? I'm copying MEMTEST86-3.2.iso

You can't copy an .iso file to a floppy and expect it to work. That is a CD image, that your supposed to burn to a CD using something like Nero...choosing the option to burn CD Image. You can also download .zip file that will extract a bunch of files, letting you make a bootable floppy.

I don't mean to sound like an ass with this comment, but if your having trouble with these steps, it's time to find a friend who is computer savvy and ask them to help you out. There's only so much we can do over an internet forum.

Yo bro, I tried copy the ISo image to a cd, that didnt work, even carnival said he couldnt get it to work of a cd. And I also tried copyin the unzip'd files to the floopy and booting off of that, And its says remove the disk or eject media. So if your gonna do nothing but sit here and rip on me cause i'm not as cool with computers as you are then dont help me! I'm trying to get help to solve my problem if you have nothing to say except i'm noobie with an attitude then go crap on someone else. I've been nothing but nice to anyone thats been trying to help me, Except you who has a problem with people that dont know as much as you. Excuse me for choosing a different carrer then you. Forgive me if I upset any moderators but I cant stand being crap'd on by some guy!!!

If you think you've been nothing but nice, you better start reading the thread over again. The ISO image works just fine. I downloaded it over the weekend and used it. The VAST majority of people having problems with it, simply don't know how to use an ISO file...case in point by you trying to copy it to a floppy.

I also clearly stated that I wasn't trying to be an ass by suggesting you have a friend help you out. You need to chill the hell out, and realize we aren't sitting in front of your PC. We are posting on an internet forum. In many cases, the problem can't be fixed unless someone is in person, looking at it. I did support for 8 years, so trust me when I say, these types of problems are common. Sometimes you just need to sit in front of the PC to fix it. I'm sorry you take issue with this, as maybe you don't understand the problems of trying to troubleshoot remotely, but you really need to change your attitude towards those offering help.

I have no problem with those offering me help, I greatly appricate anyone that tried to help me. But when you call me a noobie with an attitude come on man, And I have been nice you got all bent out of shape when I ask where I could get memtest, you had to be all look it up urself google it blah blah blah. The reason I ask where to get things is I wanna know the source that you get them from. This ways theres no mix up's like oh you needed the 3.2 version not the 2.5 I.E. If you give me the links it can help me find the programs I need faster instead of searcing threw thousands of web pages looking for something when I dont even know what I'm looking for. Carnival had no problem simply posting thelink,(which greatly help me that you carnival) Like I said before I dont mean to be rude, but when i'm trying to get help and people are telling me i'm a noobie with an attitude and i need someone to hold my hand, I get upset! Fi you cant respect that then i'm sorry for you.

Now back to my problem at hand. I got the boot floppy working, I had a bad floppy disk. Its running memtest now. I know carnival said to let it go overnight atleast. Should memtest find any errors, The worst that would happen I would have to replace my memory? And If dosent find any errors is there something else that I should try after this. Thanks to those that are trying to help me wiht my problem

To the OP:

download this *.zip file: http://www.memtest86.com/memt32.zip

extract it.

format a floppy.

double-click the file called "install" that was uncompressed from the *.zip you downloaded

restart the computer.

enter the BIOS.

set first boot device to floppy.

exit the BIOS.

restart the computer.

let it load from the floppy.

np man, glad to hear it.

lol, you've had a really hard time with this, i hope the problem is your RAM...if not, at least you've learned how to use memtest! ;)

at any rate, let it run overnight and then post back w/ your results so we can continue to help you further

good luck! :p (if you want to show appreciation, why not come and FOLD for the greatest team on earth?)

Is this another message board?? Also where did you learn computers Carnival?? Im looking to go back to school for computers do you know of any really good trade schools??

relic's DC prayer

Behold the smile of the innocents'.
A soul unmarred by grief or pain.
With tiny hand, reaches out for comfort.
Be that I could give it.

We, imperfect and unsure, do struggle with faith
No sense to the suffering, we strive for reason.
Yet the strength of conviction guides us onward,
We shall make a difference.

From the first one to the next, we join.
Band together, and follow the call.
Noone knows from where the horns sound.
Nor care we, our mission is clear.

Since mankind began, he has combined his efforts.
But now, with effort unique in it's scope, we may change our destiny.
Why now have we been given this?
Perhaps we have gotten an answer to our prayers.

More than the sum of us, we have been given,
This chance to make another's life whole.
No reward shall we see, not even the fruits of these efforts
Yet my heart reaps the bounty, my soul, peace.

If there is to be a judgement
When the face of our creator we shall see
Though our failures shall be noted
So too shall "DC for humanity"

I find in this, great peace and solace.
For I have been given this chance

how you can get started: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=905909

and i learned about computers in three ways: 1. i googled everything i didn't know 2. i posted here about what i still didn't know and 3. i did trial and error until i did know.

sorry man, can't help you w/ any trade schools..heh, i'm still in high school

thanks you guys , I've been learning the same way that you have been carnival. I'm just looking to take it to another level.

When your here longer, you'll know why I refered to you as an NWA (Noobie With Attitude). It's a very common problem we've had in here lately. And yes, you did cop and attitude first, and I wasn't the only one to point it out. But that's in the past. As I said...once you've been here for a little while, you'll surely see more examples of NWAs.

As far as learning computers, that goes back to my previous points, that you took offense to. The way I learned was from friends who knew more than me. They'd come over to show me how to fix a problem, and give me a lesson about it. Eventually you can start to pick things up yourself. It never hurts to have a friend get the ball rolling. My interest in them was sparked when a friend helped me build a new computer for myself...a screaming Pentium 233 Mhz.

As far as you go, my advice would be to relax and not be so sensitive and uptight about things. You tell me I have a problem, but your the one getting upset from an internet website. You also didn't really understand some of my comments, such as the hand-holding, etc. You sound young, which means you probably haven't been out in the corporate world long...if at all. Once you are, you'll understand that phrase more in terms of computer support. We were all noobs on here once, regardless of skill level. You just need to chill out a little....don't get so worked up about every little thing, and you'll be fine. If your planning on a career or hobby in computers, you will need more patience, because it's frustrating...but very rewarding. If you do choose that path, good luck, and we will always be around to help. Just remember, like I said...chill out and as Ranma_Sao always says, help us help you.
