new graphics card help

i just got my system together and i need a decent video card.
i dont want to spend more than $190, all i play is half life 2, i would really appreciate any help, maybe i will overclock, im just new to all this, thanks
 
oh yeah here are my specs:
asus a8v
amd 3000+ 64 bit
so i cant use pci express
 
ok just for shits and grins, what if i wanted to stay below $150, i had an ati radeon 9600se, what would be better than that card for under $150, thanks a lot guys
 
The $50 more you would spend on a 6600GT would be well worth it. That card is faster than even a 9800-pro. The money would be well spent considering that rest of your system would be able to push a 6600GT very well.

Stay away from the FX series. They choke pretty bad in DX 9.0.
 
God, read the damn question people. He says "under $150," and he gets NOTHING but over $150 answers. People can be so unhelpful on these forums sometimes.

You might be able to find a used 9800 Pro for that price. You might find one on sale on ebay by a reputable seller and get one for cheap.

In a NEW card, the best you will be able to do is a 9600 XT, it will run Half-Life 2 well and run about $130-140. The comparable nVidia card is the FX 5700 Ultra, but they tend to be overpriced and hard to find.

Best bang for the buck at the low end is probably the 9600 Pro, a little slower than the 9600 XT, but alot faster than anything near its price (about $100).

Yes, a 6600 GT would be better. But it will cost more like $200 new, and any used copies of a card that new being sold for much cheaper are probably defective.

See any contradictions here?

First, the original title said under $190.
Second, a tax free, free ship $170 is comparable to a B&M $150 card.
Third, people are only offering advice. The poster is interested in playing probably the most graphics intensive game out right now. Skimping on a card is only gonna lead to slow, stuttering, headache inducing gameplay.

Recommending an upgrade from a 9600se to a 9600XT is not helpful.

thanks a lot, yeah i get the whole 9600se to 9600pro wouldnt be a huge change, but the 9600se is now broken, so i just need a cheap fast purchase, ill probably get a regular 6600, or 6600gt if i can find a cheap one, thanks a lot guys
