Are these good picks?

Please answer the stickied "ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FIRST!" so that we can help you better.

Though both build lists are pretty bad and could use some massive improvements in quality and performance.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
- Gamming, CAD and a bit of photoshop and vegas
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
- 1200€ all included
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
- Portugal
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
- GPU, Mobo, CPU, Case, Hard Drive, SSD, PSU, RAM.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
- Nothing to be reused
6) Will you be overclocking?
- Yes
7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
- 1920X1080, 23''
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
- Dec, Jan
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.
- Mainly USB 3.0, SATA 6Gb/s, UEFI, RAID
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
- Yes Win 7 64bit

So is he doing a lot more CAD work than he is gaming or vice versa? In other words, what matters more to your friend: AutoCAD performance or gaming performance?

What programs is he using for CAD work?

To critique your builds while I wait for your answers:

Build 1:
That motherboard won't support the CPU out of the box. Since more than likely you won't have some nearby with the older Core i7 3820 to do the BIOs update, that Asus motherboard is not a good choice for that CPU. Also, none of the socket 2011 CPUs come with a heatsink. So you need to buy a 3rd party HSF no matter what with the socket 2011 platform.

The video card is almost the bare minimum for 1080P gaming. So I would recommend something higher-end if possible.

Build 2:
IMO, unless you're aiming for extremely overclocks, that motherboard is bit overkill for your friend. Also, you're missing the 3rd party HSF needed for an overclocking setup.

The RAM is stupid overkill. You won't notice a difference between DD3 1600 and DDR3 2133 in most real world apps and games. In addition, the PSU is not a good choice since it's actually of significantly lower quality than the XFX PSU in the first build. So you're better off with the XFX in the long run.

Here in the U.S, the GTX 770 is a bit overpriced. However, depending on your answer to my two questions above, that GTX 770 might be a good buy.

For both builds:
Not entirely sure of that case. It looks rather...weak for the price it is. See if the Corsair 300R or 400R is available for around the same price. Also, look for the Seagate 1TB instead since it's a tad faster. Finally, see if the Samsung 840 Evo 120GB is around the sme price as that Kingston SSD.

I talked to him about it and he wants a some quind of a hibrid.
From the description he gave me about the program, its a CAD like analysis software for his university projects, a high CPU load program. So i don't know if i'll go to a i5 or i7 :-S

About the overkill choices he wants something to last, at least 5 years.

I have the Zalman Z11 Plus and i'm happy with it, so that's why that case. But ill look into those and see what he thinks.

Also the parts you mentioned are about the same price so I'll make the change :)
SEAGATE 1TB SATA III 64MB - 58,90 €
SAMSUNG SSD 840 EVO 120GB SATA III - 90,90 €

BTW: this is the shop i use. ---> http://www.globaldata.pt/index.aspx (u might need the google translator its in portuguese)

What's the name of the program? Your answer will determine which CPU and GPU he should get.

He could want the system to last 10 years and that still wouldn't change the fact that the motherboard and RAM are effectively useless to him.
