Ok so I just got a 360 with the HDMI out on it, but the big news is the wife just okay'd an upgrade!

So I need to find a TV that I can game/movie on and really impress her so I can get a Blu-Ray soon! Here's my limitations:

Price: Up to $1300
Size: Going for atleast 50"
Type: Not sure DLP or LCD
Inputs: Atleast 2 HDMI and 1 PC connection
Rez: Not sure on this one.. I really want 1080P but don't know the difference from 1080i to 1080P (i'm sure blu-ray will benifit from 1080P)

That's pretty much it.. I Don't have much experience in LCD, DLP and whatnot but the ONLY thing the wife cares about is the viewing angles.. SHE HATES it if the screen goes dim if you got from side to side. I just want something to watch Football/Baseball and game it up with the 360 and my PC without ghosting.

Please feel free to post your experiences and help me out! :)

FWIW I've been finding out that LCDs can ghost just as much as plasmas...
Can't comment on DLP, however.

You want a 50" for under $1300???

I'm guessing DLP is your only chance for that. DLP is great though.

You are going to have a rather difficult time finding a 50" 1080p LCD for < $1300, so you're probably going to have to go with DLP. I see that Newegg has the Samsung HL-T5076S in that price range, with free delivery, so that might be worth looking into. Modern DLPs don't suffer from the rainbow effect, though, so the only serious trade-off is being heavier and a little bigger than an LCD - and you do get better IQ, so that's a plus.

if you find an lcd panel with all those spec at that price... tell me , im in

Bestbuy has the Westinghouse 47" for $1300, plus you might be able to add a 10% coupon.

Yea, i have the 42" Westinghouse from best Buy, got it for $1000 with the coupon and a replacement plan. The set is awesome.

I was able to find a Panasonic TH-50PX60U 50" for 850ish on ebay, works perfect and has no scratches.

They normally go for around that on ebay.

I have a 42 inch Westinghouse 1080p and while it was a great value for a PC monitor, I think there are better options for consoles.

For instance, you can pick up a large, 720p Samsung, Sharp, or Sony LCD for around the same price, and in my opinion it looks better. I have a 720p Sharp LCD and the PS3 and 360 look better on it, over the 1080p Westinghouse. Most console games run in 720p anyways. If you want to future proof with 1080p, then thats another matter.

Thats just how I see things.

50" Plasma for $1300 is what I've found (A Samsung)... you didn't mention plasma not sure if you'd want that or not...

Well I knew it was going to be hard to find a LCD for >1300 hehe. I am kind of leaning towards DLP but not sure what all the benefits are from it yet.

Ghosting wise, I know that will drive me NUTS! As far as 1080p vs 720p is there a HUGE difference right now?

The sales in my area are fairly modest, I think costco had a 52" Panasonic or Sony LCD for $1399 or so, did not write down the model numbers though. They also have a 55" DLP from samsung for like $1299.

I'm not sure what the rainbow effect is and how to check for it in stores, I know it has sometime to do with the color wheel(what should I look for in a quality color wheel?)

Thanks for the help guys :) KEEP IT COMIN!

Circuit City has the Sony KDF-50E3000 on sale for $1399.99...I figure that's just about as close as you can get.

I recently got a Samsung 4665f for $1499 (free shipping and no tax) from Buydig.com. It is only 46" and is a little over the $1300 price tag you are looking at, but it is 1080p and the picture is spectacular. I don't think you can get a better 46" LCD for under $1500.

From what I hear, DLP is actually a little better for gaming (don't have any experience with DLP, so I don't know if that is true), but I needed something I can mount on the wall. I avoided plasma because I watch a LOT of ESPN (scrolling ticker all the time) and though burn-in is less prevalent, it can still happen when you have tv watching habits like mine.

If space isn't a concern for you, I would look at DLP as it provides the best "bang for your buck" in my opinion. That is probably the only thing you will get over 50" for under $1,300.

I know:
LCD = Generally more expensive, no burn in
Plasma = A bit less money, but burn in is more of a problem
DLP = larger (no wall mount) size, what else???

My vote goes for the new LED DLPs. I got a 50" Samsung from amazon a little over a month ago and love it for gaming.

$1416 shipped

I was a little afraid of the shipping company (Eagle USA) because I've never heard of them, but the package came in so fast, it only took like 4 days. On top of that, they called me to let me know the package was in my area and they scheduled a delivery for 15 minutes after the call.

so my vote goes for a nice LED DLP and buy it from amazon.

Whatever you set your eyes on, look the TV up on avsforum and read up on it. I did it for mine and knew all the problems I could have with the TV before I got it

Ah well I suppose I should have stated that size is NOT a problem, we really don't have a wall for anything to go on as of yet so right now the DLP is looking like what i need to get.

I do watch a LOT of espn and even more sports. So yes ghosting is a huge issue for me. From what i've read on dlp's if their is fast action they don't blur right?

As for the LED DLP's I'm not too sure. I read up on one review for a samsung led dlp and wasn't sure what to think. He said it had a decent picture but the screen was bowed in the center BUT people have been saying that a lot about the Samsungs. Well the people who are reviewing whatever samsungs i've been looking at anyways hahha.

I will start to focus purely on DLP's then. I plan to hit a few stores tommorrow just to see what else is out there and to see if anyone has any of the LED DLP's in stock.

I would check out CNET too. I find their reviews to be pretty thorough.

That's the best info in this entire thread. Just don't wander into any other sections of AVS, as you'll find yourself upgrading your speakers, receiver, tweaking stuff to death and buying dozens of blu-rays every time there's a sale at Amazon or Fry's.

Some of the samsung DLPs do have a bowing issue, although mine does not at all. As for ghosting and delays, the newer models dont have any of these issues.

As long as you don't intend to play precision timing type games such as fighting games, or the jap versions of music games, you will be fine. No HDTV on the market is immune from input lag.

Recent games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band give the players a wide berth for getting the timing correct AND have calibration adjustments. A fighting game is completely random and based on reaction/action so if your window of opportunity is 3 frames, by the time you see the first frame, the window is closed.

No offense to people who don't notice the lag, but your senses aren't just up there to care or the old adage, ignorance is bliss applies.

I think we're still a few years off of a true "input lag free" HDTV, for now Sharp's really the only manufacturer that actually has a solution that's only off by a frame most of the time.

SAMSUNG HL-T5076S is the TV I bought. 50" Samsung 1080p Slim DLP TV. It's awesome man. Best deal you can get for a 50" 1080p tv right now. It's 1,299 on Newegg right now with a free Samsung DVD player. I bought mine on Amazon when it was down to 1,199 with free shipping. It's up to 1,302 on Amazon right now, but you have to pay for shipping and it doesn't come with a DVD player like on Newegg, so get it from Newegg then you could just sell the DVD player or something. It has every connection I could have ever needed on it. 3 HDMI, 2 Component, 2 S-Video, 2 Composite inputs, VGA port, USB port, and built in tuner. http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16889102137

I love the thing. Blu-Rays and HD-DVDs look amazing on it at 1080p, and games are amazing too. I would however suggest a speaker system of some sort, but if you had to, the speakers aren't that bad either.
