Well I've been planning to build a new computer for a couple months now, but my old system is finally starting to crap out(I get BSOD, black screens, and get stuck in infinite loops with only light usage of this machine)

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811208021
Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131299
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814129113
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231122
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148316
22" LCD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236028
Thermal Paste: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007
HSF: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835887011

total: $1280~ shipping, before rebates(about $1200 after)

edit: $1185 with these promotions http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemai...mc=EMC-IGNEFL081908-_-email-_-E0A-_-Moredeals

I'm hoping to build a system capable over maxing all settings in all games at 1680x1050, I already have a relatively new 22x Samsung DVD burner going into this build as well as a 500GB seagate harddrive in my current computer. I want to overclock the Q6600 processor, can anyone recommend a place to buy one with a G0 stepping?

Please do not tell me to buy a 24" LCD, I wont stand for medium settings even if the resolution is higher, unless I could afford an HD4870x2 and a 24" I don't see it as a reasonable decision.

Looks pretty good. I also wouldn't recommend getting a 24" LCD because I have one and it's just not worth the price over a 22" LCD unless you like to sit really far away. So good decision on that one.

too much clicking. Anyone seeking advise on a build should list their parts with a link, not just a link. DUnno about everyone else but i dont have 8 hours a day to click on links.... oh yeah thats right i actually do have 8 hours free tiem at work. I'm just lazy and makes more sense to give specs :p

Ever hear of tabbed browsing? It takes literally 3 seconds to click all the links and have them open in tabs.

But if you still cant be bothered:

CPU: Q6600
GPU: Visiontek HD4870
Motherboard: ASUS P5Q Pro
PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W
RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3320613AS 320GB
LCD: ASUS VW222U Black 22"
HSF: ZEROtherm Nirvana NV120

Pretty close to what I'm getting Bojangles.

I scored a QX6850 for a little more than a Q6600.

We are going to have similar rigs. Good luck with your build, I want to see pics of it when you're done in that case!

Link to the QX6850 deal?

edit: lol nvm those are $1000 chips

Heh, Intel Retail Edge.

6850 was $239. I couldn't go wrong with it. I'm ordering the P5Q Pro, DDR2 G. Skill 1000 (2x2), the 620hx Corsair Modular, and teh same 4870 as you.

However, I still don't know what case I want. I may get another Antec 900.

Can't think of any places, online or retail, that specifically sell G0 steppings. Just going to have to chance it with Newegg. Though by now a good majority of those Q6600 CPUs should be G0 stepping.

Anyway, your build looks good to me. The only major problem I have with it is the case. Looks very very cheaply built to me. In addition, the thickness of the rear and front girlls will impact airflow a bit. I recommend going with this case:
Antec 300 ATX Case - $60

Get a bigger hdd, i recommend you this. As for the heatsink better go with one of them:TRUE, Scythe Ninja, Mugen or Zipang. The rest of the system is very good!

That case looks like it would have pretty poor airflow, only 2 fans(one in the back and top, wouldn't one in front and back be better? I prefer at least 3 fans personally)

Actually it depends on the setup of the PC. There are some cases/situations where two exhaust fans will cool better than one up front and one in the back. In addition, note the front part of the 300 case: It's pretty much just a mesh. So that will allow air to be pulled from the front of the case by the rear and top fans. Whereas the case you chose only has a tiny vent for front fan. So in addition to the somewhat thick grills in that Xion case, the front fan wont' be able to push or draw that much air.

You can always add more fans since the front of the Antec 300 can fit two more 120mm fans like these:
120mm Yate Loon D12SL-12 Case Fan - $3.60

Nice build. Cases are personal preference, but danny made a good suggestion.

Ever hear of tabbed browsing? It takes literally 3 seconds to click all the links and have them open in tabs.

Takes too long, 3sec * 12 links = 36sec, and my P4 2.8Ghz can't handle all those tabs at once. :p Its MUCH easier if people list it so we can simply read it while replying. With all those tabs, you have to remember each item from each tab, or switch tabs between typing comments per item. Some of us are just here for a quick browse to offer any quick input we can, and it would be much appreciated if people seeking help would help the people that are trying to help them. :) Oh, and thanks for listing the specs, finally. :D

Hey bud my 3000+ AMD64 handles tabs just fine, and you have hyperthreading :p(also I meant what I said, I can open all of those links in 3-4seconds in tabs)

Good for you... I can't... at least not in the same fashion as my Q6600 can. :p Plus, I have no hyperthreading. :( I'm also running sims in the background, so that makes it even slower. I'm not gonna stop my sims just to click on a bunch of links.

Even with the tabs open, you can't comment on each part without having to switch tabs, which is painstaking if someone listed out more than 3 items. It takes 3 seconds to type out the name of each part per link. All I'm saying is, if you want people to take the time to help you, take the time to make it easier for them to help you -- which you did afterwards. ;) So why are we still talking about this?

dont buy a fucking 2.4ghz quad for a gaming rig, get at least the 2.85 or whatever 9650 if you have to have a fucking quad 3ghz core 2 will eat a 2.4 quad in games.

PS3 ftw.

Not if you're only playing FSX, Crysis, and/or SupCom.

Getting sick of "hype" is useless.

You do realize that a G0 Q6600 paired with a quality aftermarket heat sink is almost guaranteed to hit 3.2ghz and be rock solid stable?(many people hit 3.6ghz just fine)

3ghz core 2 will eat a 2.4 quad in games.

At lower resolutions. At higher resolutions (usually at or above 1280x1024), the performance between a 2.4Ghz Q6600 and 3Ghz E8400 is practically nil. You really should read this article:
http://www.guru3d.com/article/cpu-scaling-in-games-with-quad-core-processors/

So yes while there are no positives for getting a quad-core CPU for gaming (unless you play FSX and SupCom a lot, then there's a positive), there are no negatives to getting a quad-core CPU for gaming either (unless you play at 1024x768)

Actually: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Q6600-Q...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1219205036&sr=8-1

"Amazon is only shipping the Q6600 with confirmed BX80562Q6600 SLACR, with G0 stepping"

That's where I got mine just a couple weeks ago, and Yes, it is SLACR G0 Stepping. :D

By the way, which aftermarket Heatsink will fit without issues in a CoolerMaster 690 case? Seems that reviews are all over the place on newegg.... options besides the xigmatek w/bracket.... under $40?

The only suggestion that I would make is the video card... that card is 512MB of DDR3.

The 1GB versions (DDR5) should be coming out within 4-6 weeks, and they are rumored to not cost too much more than the 512 ddr3 version.

Just something for you to think about.

The video card I have listed clearly states DDR5, which is a main feature of the HD4870

I think he was emphasizing the 1GB part, not the GDDR5 part and just did a typo at the end.

4-6weeks is still a very long wait, if it was coming out soon I would probably be all over it as it is a nice midpoint between the 4870 and 4870X2

You probably don't need that much VRAM, though, for a 22" LCD. IIRC, more VRAM just helps with higher detail at high resolutions.

Well I'm still on the fence on whether or not to spring for the 4870X2, yeah I only have a 22" but the system would certainly last me longer :p

Vidcards are the fastest depreciating component, so its best not to spend top dollar on one. Buy whats within budget and best for your needs, and just sell it later on when you need to upgrade. Thats been the best approach, IMO, and its worked for me for quite a few years. My hand-me-down chain has no need for gaming cards, lol, so I typically sell mine off and pickup a cheap card for the hand-me-down rig.
