Running games on mid+high settings with onboard video? That's almost an impossibly tall order..
I'm going to say LLano-type fm2 stuff (new AMD Trinity)
It may bite you in the butt down the road though..when the cpu is underpowered for a real gpu.

Agreed, there is no way Intel onboard would work. Problem is, at 1080p I am not confident that Trinity will play things at mid-high settings very well. Aren't all the benchmarks that show decent FPS tested on a res well below 1080p?

So, the OS would need to be part of the budget. I suppose also if there is a video card we can just include in the $700 budget as well. He could always upgrade it later. looking at Radeon cards

Here's the deal: mid settings is still a bit too high for games like ME3 and SWTOR using onboard video at 1920x1080. For LOL, onboard video is more than enough.

While you could go for the FM2 CPUs with its faster onboard video, the second you add a dedicated card, you've essentially negated the whole advantage of those FM2 APUs and you would be stuck with a CPU portion that trails behind Intel CPUs in games.

So in other words, he's gonna have to get a dedicated card now if he wants mid-settings in games. That will kinda CPU performance in the long run due to having to go with a cheaper CPU but that's the only way he can get medium settings gaming right now.

So what it will be? Onboard video gaming at low resolutions and settings now but faster CPU and even faster GPU long term or medium settings gaming now but slower CPU long term and additional GPU costs?

That GPU should allow for mid-to-high settings for current games.

That wasn't a smart choice at all. First, it's still $41 until you get that rebate. At $41, that was a poor buy for three reasons:
1) It only has one 120mm fan. The NZXT Source 210 Elite has one 120mm fan and a 140mm fan
2) It lacks front-panel USB 3.0. The NZXT Source 210 Elite has a front panel USB 3.0 port
3) Its cable mangement is severely lacking compared to the NZXT Source 210 Elite. Note the lack of holes near the motherboard tray's edge in the Coolermaster compared to the cable management holes found in the NZXT Source 210 Elite. In addition, if you look at the rear of the cases, you'll notice that the space between the back of the motherboard and the case's side is very thin with the Coolermaster. The NZXT Source 210 Elite has a bit more space behind the motherboard.

If you can,.cancel the order and go with the NZXT Source 210 Elite instead. As you can see, it comes with enough extra features to justify its $9 higher cost.
