New Features for 2006

With the new year, we would like to bring in some new features that would liven things up a bit around here and hopefully add some content to this forum that we all can enjoy.

There are going to be 3 new positions here in the [H]orde, and we want you to apply!

The first two positions are going to be for news guys/gals. We would like to institute a weekly "[H]orde Happenings" to be written up, emailed to King and posted on the HF.com website for publication. We are going to split this between two folks so that no one person is burdened with it each week. We are looking for reliability here. Anyone who accepts this job, please take it seriously and don't let us down. Here is how the positions will be filled.... If you are interested, please post here that you are. At some time in the near future, you will be asked to PM a writing sample to us. These will be posted and a poll will be created. The team will elect the two news people and then they will be put to work.

The third position is similar but completely different.

In relation to the "[H]ard|DC'er of the Month" polls that we are running, we want to have someone interview each month's winner. I would like to start this as soon as January. A list of questions will be drafted and each month, this person will conduct an IM interview with the DC'er of the month. The transcript from the discussion will then be posted here and I hope to have it archived at HF.com as well. Let me know if you are interested in this, and I will select someone to be the official [H]orde interviewer.

If you have any ideas or suggestions on how we can improve upon these ideas, or any new ideas of your own, please let us know.

2006 is the year that you all can have a part of this team by doing more than just folding. :)

Just one question Mr. Moose,

The [H]orde [H]appenings news position. Would it involve just what occurs [H]orde wise, or any news related to the two projects or medical news in general?

i read into it that it would be some of everything

It's a little bit of everything. Some examples, the news blurbs that King_N occasionally posts on hardfolding.com with general cancer advancements, project related information, team happenings. If its related to what we do, or our team, its fair game. :D

Sounds good. I would be interested in the news guy/gal. Maybe a poll on if I should be a news guy or a news gal if I am selected? :D

Well Moose's plan is, all the nominees will submit entries, little blurbs kind of like what we see on the front page of the [H]. It'll be a blind choice poll where all the listings are thrown up and the team will vote. The two best will be the news people. :D

Re-read his comment. It's a mary/marty complex type thing. :p

Also, you may want to give more ideas on what would be posted up there for updates. It would be nice if there were updates like we do for the [H]ordeBowl in the forum. Things like posting the winners/losers each week and maybe a link to the thread in the forum. It would make the front page of hardfolding much more dynamic which it needs to be. I'm assuming things like this would be put on there. Maybe there should have been a thread asking about what should be put up there. Obviously with King's input of course as he's the one that does the posting.

Volunteering myself as an interviewer.

Hell, I don't think ive won the [H]DC of the month yet... maybe i'll get to interview myself :p

I'd like to be a news person, but I'm afraid that my coming semester in college is going to get really tough, and my time on the forums and on the internet in general is going to sharply drop. I wish the best of luck to everyone who is entering submissions. I know you'll all do great.

while i hate to undermine our fearless leader is the interviewer really nesisary. couldnt we just require the winner to answer the preset questions in a new thread. unless i dont inderstand the concept

I would like to apply for the interviewer postion, but I am probably too new to do so....

Since I am not going to be paying him, I say no harm, no foul.
;)

I kinda like the personal touch of the interviewer...the questions are going to be scripted, but the conversation may go elsewhere and that is what I would like to see.

Those of you that have responded so far, please check your PM boxes....

Viper, Make some room! ;)

If anyone is still interested, please let me know. This is still open to everyone.

yeah i got and I just sent one to ya

but if you wait to long to post it it might look bad b/c of how fast somethings change online and what not.

At the end of this week, I am going to make the poll and the News folks will be selected. If you haven't gotten your news item to me via PM, please do so. If you are still interested, please let us know.

Since only 3 folks were interested in the news position and 1 dropped out, no poll was needed.

First up is magnusvir:

Over the Atlantic, scientists at the University of Newcastle in the UK are developing biosensors which are used to detect cancer proteins. Each of the sensors is as big as a dust speck and is coated with proteins and DNA which bind onto cancer cells. Here is the interesting part, it uses the same technology used for navigation. And the accuracy of the sensor means that the cancer could be detected a lot earlier than currently possible.

Second is Duster:

Well unless you have been under a rock, the [H]orde is once again number the number one team

It looks like we are not the only ones trying to up our numbers. Over 200000 active CPUs! (in Aug) Man that is a lot of power. Folding has grown to 212499 active in just a few months

All those CPU’s might make you start Dreaming about boxen.
You might want to make sure that they all get the safest config or otherwise you might be yelling at the top of the lungs ”I am getting angry” because some of them are sure to spew out some bad units. Some might even have No record of work unit problems that need to be worked out. With that many b0xen you would probably break this Post your total number of folding machines poll.

If your new look here for the official Welcome to the [H]orde post from Duster. Go look at Newbie challenge And don’t be afraid to post or make fun of the moose while you’re here. We all enjoy some good or bad photochops of him.

Also don’t forget to nominate your favorite DC’er for this month

And don’t forget about DC either. Get it started and lets try to make this a tad more healthy.

Some people have started to wonder what folding does well how about helping doctors use drugs to fight those nasty cancer cells. Dr. Luo and his biochemist team in China are doing just that.

Protein folding was Dr. Luo's area of expertise at Stanford. He read papers about the well-publicized drug, including one in which Dr. Folkman described endostatin's structure. "My intuition was that (endostatin) should work," Dr. Luo recalls. "I felt we could improve it."

Congrats Duster and magnusvir!! I will be in touch via PM to get some scheduling down.

We are still in the process of getting the interviewer position filled. More updates to come on that. :)

I would keep my ears to the ground, but at the moment the ground is rather mucky and the mud would get crammed in with the ear-cheese.
