New ESXi build, need help.

Hi I'm new to this forum.

This is my first ESXi build, but not my first comp. build.

I was wondering if anyone knows if this motherboard is compatible with ESXi, since it is not listed in any supported whitebox papers.

I am using this combination:

SUPERMICRO MBD-X7DAL-E-O Dual LGA 771 Intel 5000X
2x Intel Xeon E5405
2x Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 FB-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) ECC Fully Buffered Dual Channel Kit Server Memory Model KVR667D2D8F5K2/4G
2x Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM (for now)
COOLER MASTER UCP RS700-AAAAA3 700W ATX12V / EPS12V
EVGA 256-P2-N753-TR GeForce 8600 GT 256MB
Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower

Any recommendations and changes would be helpful, i'm trying to keep this build under 1400.
 
First though: Get more memory.

And you can probably drop the EVGA 8600GT card. I know the board doesn't have video - but you probably don't need to use an 8600GT.

I assume you just have this lying around, or else why would you use it. Leave it in, make one of the machines a dedicated folding machine and put that card to use.
 
Currently i can't afford more memory, i'll be getting the last 4gb in a month.
I don't have a extra video card laying around. I would probably only need a $15-20 vid card, but couldn't decide.

I am wondering if this motherboard and it's built in sata controllers are compatible with esxi.
I'll probably be looking to get a raid card in the future, but too much for my wallet right now.

i wanted to get the cm one because it's apparently more energy efficient.

In the whitepapers, the motherboard isnt explicitly in there.
Is it about the north and south bridges that are important, and those are the ones that need to be compatible?

The PSU isn't that much more efficient than either the 750TX or PC P&C 750.

I think it's about the NB and SB being compatible.
 
Is ESXi able to run without a video card after ESXi is already fully installed?

It's actually more dependent on the motherboard actually. Some motherboard do not boot at all without a video card attached.
 
i'm scared to take out the video card, the whole setup is working great, but doesnt work if a IDE device isnt found, so i just threw in my 10 yr old cd-rom drive.
