Guys,
Im in the market for a new dvd player. My requirements are DVI out, dvd-a and sacd. Ive been looking into these: Bravo D2, Samsung 841/941 and Momitsu. Any review links or personal comments. Sorry if this needs to be moved to htpc mods...thanks in advance guys

I don't see where the Bravo D2 meets your requirements of SACD and DVD-A; The Samsung lacks SACD; and the Momitsu lacks both like the Bravo. I am interested to see if such a player does exist, which is why I researched your alternatives, but I only see more of the same. SACD support appears to only come in expensive Sony players that have only analog outputs, and DVD-A is apparently rare in affordable units and has similer restrictions. They went Nazistyle with the new higher-definition formats it seems, alsmost like you have to have a system separate from your home theater with it's own speakers to enjoy such things.

Just so you guys know, you can only get DVD-A out of those analog outputs, they haven't agreed to standard for digital yet [due to piracy issues] You can get SACD through digital out, but only using the firewire link, and that will only interoperate with receivers equipped with the same. Those, of course, generally fall into a very high price bracket, and since that standard is very new also, there are some compatibility problems.

If I were you, I'd look at a combination of two players: One dedicated DVD player with DVI/HDCP, and one universal player to handle the other media. Players that immediately come to mind, staying under a thousand dollars [which is about the minimum for your requirements] are the Momitsu v880 for DVD's, and either the Marantz DV6400 or Denon 2900 for the audio formats.

Head over to www.avsforum.com , www.hometheaterforum for more info on both players, or try asking the same question there.

Be prepared to fork over some serious cash though.

um this one doesnt support sacd and dvd-a?

yea they recently pushed the release back from june to sept. Is the lower model available?

That is a cool peice of technology. Certainly beats the POS Kenwood 5-Disc changer that came with my HTIB. Will have too keep that in mind, thanks for the research and linkage.

Don't bother with DVI on DVD players for another year or two, anyway. We need to see them come with good MPEG decoders and good deinterlacing/IVTC before DVI is even worth it. A good quality component player will look a lot better than the Bravo.

That goes against anything I have heard up to this point. Do you have any proof to back that up, as well, any immediate solution? Your opinion stinks of someone that either knows nothing or knows far too much for it to be useful to any of us.

It depends on the output device. LCDs, LCD based projection TVs, DLPs all use digital control, all the way to the output. For these devices, an analog signal line loses information, because the signal is converted from digital to analog to digital again. CRTs and CRT projection systems need an analog signal prior to output, thus they may benefit from an input signal that is analog, because there is no further D <--> A conversion needed.

Digital to analog to digital conversion will give you less of a quality loss than a crappy MPEG decoder and/or crappy deinterlacer. Believe me, I am all for digital connections, but throwing DVI in a player otherwise not much better than an Apex is not going to look better than the older generation Denon or Panasonic players with Sage DCDi chips (AKA Faroudja) and decent-good MPEG decoders.

You should take a look at the Momitsu V880. It has both good quality digital and analog connections. Not sure if it is Faroudja based or not though.

Hmm. That one looks interesting. I'll wait until hometheaterhifi does a comparison with it, though.

By the way, the Bravo is a junk unit alltogether. Some of the Samsungs have Faroudja but they use junk MPEG decoders.

Already understanding this, this is where my kick in the nutz to dandragonrange came from. Basically, digital in, digital through, digital out. Why polute it with analog? I'll have to investigate those links, but I think they may be a bit fanatical.

While DVI isn't going to solve the fundamental image quality problems with the MPEG decoder and deinterlacer chips, it's hard to argue against having one. At least it offers a theoretically bit-perfect path to the TV or output device, and allows for HDTV resolutions without any problems.

(DVI-D, of course.)

That is exactly my understanding of it. Oh, I checked those links- one is inaccessable, the other I'm going to need some help finding what you would consider proof to back up your claim. Not trying to be an ass, but you are claiming that something logically backwards is true, and if you believe it, I want to know why. Especially since I am interested in the technology for personal use.

I am not saying DVI is bad! I am saying it does not make up for other crappy components. Here, I will make it super easy for you:

Good MPEG Decoder + DVI > Good MPEG Decoder + component > Bad MPEG Decoder + DVI

The Denon DVD-5900 meets all of your requirements, but it's in a higher price bracket, so to speak.

High quality stuff, though.

That is a very nice DVD player, it supports Denon-Link so if you have a reciever that supports Denon-Link you can have a simpler connection for the DVD-A format. As soon as Sony gives them the go-ahead on the SACD for denon-link you can have it too. Makes for a far simpler wiring job, not sure how much it adds to quailty though. Short runs of analog RCA is not going to be noticeable to digital, and since the Denon 5900 has pretty much the same DAC that are in the reciever that has Denon-Link you wont see a diff in the DAC area.

So the really only advantage to Denon-Link is easier to wire, maybe less potential for noise but that is marginal. My Denon 3805 has denon-link and if they put denon-link on a player that is more reasonable priced I most likely would get it.

5900 is just well a little too much to spend for a transport for me.

i dont want to think to hard (i just took and organic 2 test) but the denon direct link allow for digital bass management. Which is currently the biggest problem with rca pass through for dvd-a/sacd. I know I use em. Also dandragonrage, what player do u use? What else would u suggest?
Faroudja chip = best quality i thought, dvi out to dvi monitor = perfect solution.

Will the output be hdcp'ed so i cant play it on my sammy 191t? I only have a sdtv right now

You are right I forgot about the bass management, which is a big thing.

Faroudja is the best deinterlacer right now, but it is not an MPEG decoder. You need both of those to be good. Denon has some good players and if you can find a Panasonic RP82 or XP50, those are good too. Both of those Panasonics are discontinued, so you'd have to be very lucky to find them. Personally, I use my computer for DVD playing. I do not think there is a single DVD player worth buying, but that's because I do not have a great TV. I would prefer to watch DVDs on a 22" monitor than a 27" TV.

I'd have to go with a Denon if you want something right now.

Notice that the Denon does not currently support DVD playback through the DVI port...

Says "supported in the future...."

Only big downside I see with the Denon 5900 is that you have to have an HDCP enabled TV. The Momitsu V880, at least in terms of straight DVD playback, supports both DVI and HDCP standards, along w/ 720P/1080I upconversion, both digitally and analogically [? I know that's not a real word, but I also don't know its real equivalent]
Check out some thread in the DVD Players forum at www.avsforum.com , many people are singing the praises for this guy. At 300$, it's not bad. However, I'm waiting for the V880N, which has ethernet and can play streaming music, video, and photos from your computer, and a few other things!

Sounds like a great device, assuming it's bug-free.

BO(V)BZ any word on price or when it will be release? I guess thoose features are cool but i would never use them as my comp is hooked up to my ht already.

I tried looking some info up, but I didn't really find anything. Their website doesn't really bother to say. In fact, I think their website listed them as being out since March... so who knows?
