New DC'er, some questions

I just downloaded and installed the Folding@Home client for Linux. It seems to be working as it is eating up one of my cores to 100% constantly. I was wondering how long it is supposed to take to do a work unit... I've been working on one called p2106_lamda_5way_melt_4_100 for 2 hours now and it's still only 3%

Also, when do I show up on the [H]orde "New Members" list. Is it only after I finish this WU? (I'm properly configured to team 33)

no prob...welcome to the team...as for that protien...it takes a while...i think about 2 days t finish it....check the YURT site for it (look for the thread...im lazy :))...and yea...once you get that unit in then you will start showing up everywhere. just sit back and welcome to the addiction. and when you show up on hardfolding.com....get your badge...there sexy...see:

 
Cool... well I'm liking the idea of having my spaceheater be doing something useful while I'm passed out drunk or whatever.

OC, Borg your work computer/school computer/parents work computers/your friend's computer/Parent's computer/friend's work computer....etc etc etc (just be sure to get permission :))
 
alot of people here have multiple computers solely for folding

it's an addiction that's more expensive than crack

 
also, you have a dual-core pc there, right?


you can run two clients at a time.


 
Start donating blood and buy more boxen. A lot of us are running much more than 1 computer. Some are serious borg Gods. Dedicated boxes are much more expensive but give a longer term more reliable PPD (points per day). Borging is much cheaper, but you might feel like a door-to-door salesman at times and you need to get to understand FAH well so you set up other peoples boxes well.

To give you an idea of the effort involved I'll give you my profile (computers/PPD):

I get around 1500-1600 Points Per day. I get this from the following computers:

11 - Dedicated boxen (running 24/7 at my home or office, about 5 I use only for folding)
XP1900+
XP2500+
XP 2500+ mobile
XP2400+
Celeron 2.4Ghz
Opteron 165
Sempron 3000+ (S754)
Athlon64 3400+ (S754)
Athlon XP Mobile 3000+ (S754) <---Bastard child processor for Compaq
Turion ML-37
Pentium-M 1.8Ghz

5 - Borged
Athlon64 3400+ <- Boxen I built for a friend
Athlon64 X2 3800+ (1 Core running FAH) <- Dad's box I built for him
Athlon64 3000+ (off a lot) <- Mom's box I build for her
Athlon64 mobile 3200+ (off a lot)<- Dad's laptop
Pentium D (don't remember speed, running 1 core) <- Mother in-law's box I bought for her

That's basically what I have folding for me. Of my 1500-1600 PPD, about 85% of it comes from my dedicated folders. I get anywhere from 90 PPD (XP 1900+) to 300 PPD (Opteron 165) on average from each of my dedicated systems.
 
Yah, you got a dual core, run 2 instances of folding with the -local flag.

As for getting more done, taking a day, or several days per work unit is standard, depending on how fast the computer is, and how big the work unit is.

As they said, to get more done, run more computers.
