i recently sold my 8800gt, 2gb ram, e4500 and built 8500gt, 2gb, 5600+.. now besides the gpu, this computer should be faster right? Overall it feels pretty slow, bootup takes forever, facebook chat lags the hell out of me, and gta4 only gets 15fps on the benchmark(got 33, though it was a while ago and updates might have changed stuff).. is there any way to make sure im getting the most out of my pc? thanks

is it overclocked? did you change your ram, or hard drive? what mobo did you change to? gotta tell us more man...

What about the harddrive? Are you using the same harddrive? Also, do you know for sure that you have the correct multiplier and frequency bus settings set correctly that the X2 5600+ is operating at 2.8GHz clock speed?

Not much of an upgrade. Also could have down graded on the motherboard.

Your "upgrade" is pretty-much a sidegrade. 2.2GHz Core 2 = 2.8 GHz Athlon 64 x2

The GTA4 numbers are irrelevant, because the 8500GT is limiting things (serious downgrade).

I can't help you with the sluggishness in-use; did you reinstall the OS? Did you install your chipset drivers?

8500gt isnt the problem, i know its a slower gpu, but my gta4 scores shouldnt of been cut in half.. that also doesnt explain the sluggishness.

its an older ide hard drive, had sata on my old one.. installed all my drivers, and it seemed pretty quick when i first installed the os.

now that i look it seems that my oc of 2.91 is still in effect, i thought i reset it.. could this be a problem?

Old IDE drive your useing? It's obvious here that downgrading do a slower IDE drive vs a SATA drive will show sum sluggishness. The 2.91 ghz shouldn't be a problem unless that is it's running hot? How's the temp on that cpu? It's not a high o/c by any means but, is it running cool? No heat issues? Also, do you have alot of programs starting up on the taskbar when windows boots? I normally turn off the ones I don't need.

would loading my pagefile decrease load times? I have to have my 4gb stick to boot up my computer anyway, and it would be faster than ide correct?

Your computer is free from viruses, adware and spyware? These apps running would slow down a pc.

typing "lol..." really helps me, thanks. and ill just pull $100 bucks out of my ass, brb... theres a reason i sold it

Theres a reason you sold it but yet you come onto the forum complaining that your computer is slower? Hold on let me sell my Ferrari and buy a honda then complain how the honda is so much slower...(not to hate on honda :D)

It seems like you don't want to accept what everyone is telling you, and that is that your "new" computer is a complete side-grade. I would suggest saving up and when you have about $400-500, sell what you have and purchase a new computer with tech that isn't 3-4 years old, THEN you will truely be amazed by the speed of newer computers (trust me I went from a socket 754 to a core i7 lol). I'm not trying to attack you but you have to realize you traded down in many ways, so don't expect the same performance you had (especially not any better).

Your GTA scores would definitely be cut in half compared to the 8800GT since GTA4 is a GPU intensive game as well as CPU intensive.

The slower IDE drive would explain the slower speed. Just to be clear: You did do a fresh reinstall of the OS correct?

i believe so, i have adaware

Supposedly the newer version is ok but I still don't trust Ad-Aware. In addition, Ad-Aware only looks for adware and spyware, not viruses and worms. I'd recommend using Malwarebytes alongside Microsoft Security Essentials to make sure that your system is mostly clear of worms, viruses, adware. spyware, malware, etc.

Also you never answered HG's question:
Also, do you have alot of programs starting up on the taskbar when windows boots? I normally turn off the ones I don't need.

Now assuming that you've reformatted again and there are no unnecessary background apps running, the slow system response is more than likely due to the IDE drive. Especially if it's an older model like you said. Not much you can do in that case besides getting a faster SATA drive for the OS.

Getting a faster SATA drive does help. I swapped the original harddrive off a Athlon 64 3700+ system and put in a newer WD SATA drive and it was noticeably faster. Also, you mentioned you have adware. I don't think that alone will protect or remove a pc from many spyware, adware and viruses that's out there. I normally run at least 3 or more different programs to remove as much of the spyware and adware. Going to alot of untrusted sites you pickup alot of adware and spyware. Do you normally do a disk cleanup and clear the browsers cache as well? I browse the web alot and do purchasing online. I have my browsers set that when I close my browser, it clears all the history, cookies, cache, active logins, etc.

Selling your E4500 and using an old IDE HDD and a slower video card is more of a downgrade than an upgrade. The performance between an E4500 and X2 5600+ cpu is overall pretty close.

BTW, what O/S are you running?

Explain to me how im in denial, i came here asking why my computer was sluggish, outside of video games i should have near the exact same performance.(for the record, i got gta4 to run well enough)

sorry if i didnt explain it correctly, but i sold off the whole computer and built this one from scratch. its running xp sp2.

I regularly clear off startup programs i dont want, i only have steam, skype, and ad-aware load up first, but it still seems to take a whole lot longer than it should.

So it's probably the IDE hd right? If so im alright with that, too broke to afford anything better hehe.

thanks for the help all
