New computer advice

Hey guys.

I'd been planning on building a new computer at some point in the near future, but a friend of mine recommended that I wait until the winter. Is there a time of year which normally brings better prices, or a planned price drop by a major manufacturer which I should be targeting?

My main uses would be 3dsMax, Photoshop, Zbrush and UDK. I'd been thinking of a 460 gtx or 6870 or similar, probably a core i5 and a bunch of ram. For an overall budget, I wanted to go <800. If I wait the 3 or 4 months, will I be able to go much farther with that?

Wait until you can no longer wait.

You can always find a good deal. Furthermore, this isn't like the late 90s where waiting a few months will get you nearly double the clock speed.

450 said it best: Wait until you can't no longer wait, then buy.

Price drops are usually announced a month before they happen. So far, no price drops have been announced. The winter holidays usually have better than normal sales of certain hardware. However such extravagant sales are usually seen throughout the year now. The Ivy Bridge CPUs are suppose to be coming out sometime in Q4 2011. They're supposedly about 20% faster than current SB CPUs. Up to you whether or not that's worth the wait.

Ivy Bridge is delayed?

Yeah they got delayed, I was going to wait for them but I scored a new 2600k from newegg for $250 so I'm down with that.

I agree wait till you are ready to buy unless there is a super hot deal on something that will go in your future rig (like 50% off or some price that never happens). Winter will get you good deals if you can wait.

I didn't actually hear about that at all. Damn, bummer.

Yes I was disappointed too. Depending on whether or not a new game comes out that I need a better system for I think I may just wait for IB.

Well there's always AMD's Bulldozer for you and I......

I no longer have that system that in my sig, I just updated it. I sold off all my high end parts as I am not playing any games atm and the ones that are run fine on the system. Figured I get some money saved for a build sometime when all this next gen comes out. I would either get SB or BD. Just depends on BD performance when it comes...
