Where the hell were these "wasting time on the internet" classes when you and I went to school?

Next semester at the University of Pennsylvania, students will walk into a classroom, pull out their laptops, their smartphones, their tablets, and sit there, for three hours, doing what they no doubt do pretty often: Waste time on the internet.

Clearly designed for those liberal arts majors and/or frat/sorority folks. ;)

So they're basically getting a small sample of what it's like to hang around [H] all day when you're at workies. :)

Seriously though, they have to write a paper about it and there's some vague, out-of-touch-with-reality academic artsy expressionism stuff for those of you that didn't waste time on the internet to read about it.

and this is why I've always thought college was/is the biggest scam ever.

hundreds of thousands in the toilet, and these days, kids can't even get a job. or if they do get one, it has shit to do with their degree.

Has less to do with degrees or no degrees and more to do with shipping jobs to asia or replacing them with computers.

Would seem like a waste of time altogether teaching a bunch of porn-addicted brats how to fuck off.

Meanwhile most people in this country do NOT spend hundreds of thousands on a college education.

Oh, look. Meanwhile I busted my ass for a degree I don't have and am paying back the loans on while college kids fuck off in a classroom. That seems legit.

Seriously, net sucked back in the day.

BBS and Forums were awesome though. Very active. Now everybody is too busy loving their own self images on social media to have any actual conversations.

Course projects include: making meaningless posts on Facebook, visiting free porn sites and reading listicles.

I bet all those kids will fondly remember this class when they get old enough to realize that choices have real life consequences as they make the check out to pay their student loans over the next 20 years... Idiots.

That makes wasting time on the internet seem like work! What? I have to read this forum and make my post? Dang it! Since nobody is telling me to code, I'll do that instead. :)

Some good reverse psychology right there!

I think Professor Cat would concur:

Hundreds of thousands? It sounds like either you never went to college and haven't the foggiest how much it actually costs vs. what FOX/NBC/CNN tells you it costs in the nightly reports (ie. 60 minutes, Lary King Live, etc.) you love to watch after your stories, or you went to college and partied for 4-12 years instead of furthering your education.

It's hilarious, people are always complaining about wanting to get the best bang for their buck, stretch the value of a dollar,etc...

Yet Education seems to be the 1 thing where people don't want to get their money's worth. One of the few things that will allow you to elevate your life, yet they are taught to ignore learning, nerds suck, partying is cool, get as many credit cards as possible and bury your life in debt so thick you can never dig yourself out perpetuating the system.

I call those people 'employees', and it's not all bad. Not everyone can own/run a business, and if they are happy to work their life away for someone else's happiness then woot!

/le rant off

I can't seem to find the American Dad scene of the dude in the library doing hot or not. Or maybe it wasn't American Dad.

Unless you run your own Law Office, Accounting Firm, or Medical Practice, I doubt you needed your degree to start your business. My family, and extended family are all small business owners. Only a couple have degrees, and they mean nothing to the businesses they operate. We do everything from construction, glass and mirror production, realty (commercial, residential and development), and we run a handful of gas stations.

To be honest, many kids don't belong in college or need to go to college. If they do go to college they need to understand that only a handful of degrees are marketable, and really only a handful of universities will help you get ahead.

Many of the current crop of college students would be much better off pursuing vo-tech careers. Our electricians make $60k/year, and we don't pay them as much as they would make working for a utility company. Seriously, we have kids in their 20's making that money, and they don't have soul crushing student load debt either.

Other than books, I haven't paid a cent for my education. Even my PhD (in progress) is fully funded.

Oh, and if the young adults of my generation can't get a job related to their degree...maybe they shouldn't have gotten a degree in underwater basket weaving. Or maybe they should have studied more. Even with a degree in engineering, it's gonna be pretty hard to get a new grad job (related to engineering) with a 2.0 GPA. Before someone jumps in and says GPA doesn't matter, you can bet your ass it does for your first post-college employer (especially for technical majors).
