New Card

i hear the prices of the 6800 series are coming down on August 11, 6800 msrp will be 199$ and it should scale up like that i.e. GT 299$ Ultra 399$
 
In most cases, the 6800 will be faster than a 6600GT.

Depends on your needs, though. The 6800 is also hotter and consumes more power. If you are building an SFF system, for example, that may be a problem.

I see you are looking at AGP parts. Something else to consider is that the WMV portion of the nVidia Purevideo decoder is broken in the 6800 hardware, but not on the 6600GT.

On the OTHER hand, I've never liked the HSF mounting mechanism on any 6600GT I've ever seen. The card has such a TINY little GPU core, and the HSF balances across it (very poorly) sticking to the card with two pins on opposite sides. It easily rocks back and forth a fairly ridiculous amount if you are not VERY careful, and that is sure to screw up the dispersion of thermal compound on the core.
 
The 6600GT is a great performer for a great price. If you can afford it, go for the 6800, but if you can't you won't be dissappointed with a 6600GT. And it uses less power etc.



Actually, dderidex, you may like my 6600GT's heatsink... it is large, but held in place very tight, in fact there is little gap between the bottom of it and the card. And, it doesn't wobble back and forward either. But thats just one of, I'm sure, hundredds of thousands out there.

This XFX, if the newegg specs are accurate, would be a 16 pipeline 6800GT GPU but with the slower memory of a 6800nu. This would make it faster than a 6800nu but slower than a true 6800GT. Still, it's the best you are going to do for that price; unless its just a typo and thats just a 12 pipe 6800nu.

6800GT > weird xfx 6800GT hybrid you linked if specs are not typo > 6800 > 6600GT
 
k thanks for the advice, i guess im just gonna think about this information untill it is ready ro buy one then i will have to make the choice. Anyways thank you very much for your input. :)
 
I've seen these before, good buys really.


Edit: if you cant afford a real 6800gt anyhow. It's better than a 6800nu too.
