Well so my old computer seems to be going out and I would like to try my hand building a new one. I want to try to hold out until the Q9450 comes out if I can but will sub in a Q6600 if I must.

I was thinking that I would start to order some of the parts between now and when the Q9450 comes out in Q1 2008 to save a bit of cash on holiday sales etc... My budget is around 2k.

Here is my list tell me what you think or if you see any bad mistakes...

Case: TJ09-BW

Cpu: Q9450 (or Q6600 if my current computer doesnt hold together a bit longer)

Cooler: Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler - Retail

Mother board : GA-P35-DS4 Rev. 2.0

video card: 8800gt (might sub something else in if a new and better card comes out between now and Q9450 release)

psu: SILVERSTONE SST-ST75ZF ATX12V / EPS12V 750W Power Supply

memory: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT12864AA804

hard drive: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD7500AAKS 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

Sound card: Creative 70SB046A00003 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series Sound Card - Retail

Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler - Retail

LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write Black SATA Model LH-20A1S - Retail

SAMSUNG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S203B - OEM

OS: xp pro

The sound card, memory, psu have fairly good rebates/price cuts at newegg at the moment so I thought I would get the ball rolling. Tell me what you guys think. Thanks!

If you don't want to deal with rebates, you can get the Ballistix RAM for $60:

Now before we can help, we need some questions answered:
- What are you planning to do with this new rig?
- Will you be overclocking?
- If gaming, what size monitor do you have?
- Any reason why you went with the DS4?
- Are you buying a new copy of XP? Or is it from another PC?

- What are you planning to do with this new rig?
gaming/multimedia mostly. My wife also does work from home at times on her research /work

- Will you be overclocking?
I'm new to overclocking but I would like to try. I'm not going to go crazy though.

- If gaming, what size monitor do you have?
I have a Dell 2001FP at the moment. I most likely will upgrade later but need to save more $$. If I upgrade I don't seeing getting a monster screen that would need SLI, 24 inch would be my max.

- Any reason why you went with the DS4?
Not in particular I read some reviews of it and it seems ok, I was also looking at the Abit IP35 Pro, and the Asus P5K-E/WIFI-AP. I'm up for other suggestions as well on this.

- Are you buying a new copy of XP? Or is it from another PC?
Well I have a copy of OEM Windows xp on this computer. I know you are just supposed to use it on 1 computer... I have a disk and key, I might try and call Microsoft and say my motherboard 'broke'. If that doesnt fly/work I guess I'll have to spring for a new copy.

If you need any other info let me know, thanks for the help.

I think you're pretty much set. Your build list is pretty good. If your rig can't hold on much longer, get the G0 Stepping Q6600 since they run cooler than the b3 stepping they have at Newegg. Link to a G0:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping CPU - $274

But one more questions, what features are you looking for in a mobo? Like RAID, more than 4 SATA ports, firewire ports, etc?

FYI you have the Ultra 120 Extreme Listed twice. A

why is that? From what I've read the 750 caviar is pretty fast, approaching raptor speed.

mainly cuz of the price, but there's also that saying about eggs and baskets...
