I am currently updrading my machine.I live in California and would like to avoid taxes but newegg and zipzoomfly seem to have the best prices (and both are in California).

Any recommendations? I am trying to save as much money as possible while still being able to overclock well... The video card is being recycled:

ATi Radeon X800 GTO2

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition

BIOSTAR TF560 A2+

Patriot Extreme Performance (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450W Active Power Supply *Would the Xclio be a better choice?

Which XClio? And what do you mean by "better choice" ? The XClio Goodpower 500W would be a good alternative if you wanted to save money since its only $50 (vs $66). The Goodpower can supply 28A on the +12V rail, while the VX450 can do 33A... so the VX450 is a better PSU (and is also made by Seasonic), and therefore costs more.

An Intel alternative would be an E4500 for $122 and a GA-P35-DS3L for $86.

I'd also ditch that Patriot RAM for some A-Data ($55 - $20MIR) ram instead.

The E4500 doesnt even need highly OC'able ram to get a good clock speed.

E4500: 11 × 200 = 2.2Ghz, DDR2-400 << STOCK speeds
E4500: 11 × 266 = 2.9Ghz, DDR2-533 << Easy OC
E4500: 11 × 300 = 3.3Ghz, DDR2-667 << Great OC

***note: P35 doesn't support anything below DDR2-667, so your RAM will be auto OC'd if you don't OC the CPU.

OC the E4500 to 3.3Ghz or higher and it will outperform that Black Edition AMD CPU. Not bad for only $10 more.

I'm assuming you mean the E4500 overclocked will outperform the 5000+ overclocked?

At stock speeds, the BE 5000+ will win. I believe they have the same limit as well, around 3.4Ghz. If both OC'd to the same clock speed, the E4500 would still be better, as Danny mentioned. You can't go wrong with either choice, though, imo. They're both easy to OC since the BE has an unlocked multiplier, and the E4500 has an already high multiplier (for a core2 chip; 11x).

EDIT:

Almost forgot! You'll need a HSF for that Black Edition CPU. It doesnt come with one. So, that bumps your price up another $20, for the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro.

If you mean that the Corsair is the higher quality PSU, then yes go with the Corsair PSU instead. It's of much better quality than the XClio Goodpower or Stablpower.

* After the rebate the 450VX is only $5 more than th XClio Goodpower 500W... I should probably go with the higher quality PSU?

Ok, so they either raised the price of the Goodpower or lowered the price of the VX450, lol. Damn, newegg raised the price of the goodpower... guess it was too much for it to be the other way around, lol. Yah, go with the VX450 instead.

Thank you for the help, I'll be placing the order tomorrow morning.

Much appreciated.
