I live in China, I will visit my parents in Canada and make a road trip to California.
My parents want a new rig and I talked them into buying mine so that I can get a new one. I'm guessing that America should have better prices then Canada or China but it doesn't give me a lot of time.

My current rig:

ASRock p55m pro
gskills DDR3-1600 2x2gb
ATI 5770
Corsair VX550W
cooler master elite 341
OCZ Vendetta 2
LG DVD

I will be in California, Orange County for 2 weeks and I'm wondering what people recommend. I can order from newegg, or go to either Fry's or MicroCenter. How do prices compare? I'm concerned about newegg in the event I receive a faulty part and need to RMA.
Also, on a side not, what do you think is a fair asking price for my rig? $500?

When I was in Beijing two years ago, I did check out some of the computer stores there. The prices for the computer hardware in Beijing really wasn't that far off from the prices of computer hardware being sold/bought in California or Canada. So you might not be saving money.

Let's do a quick sample though: Find out and tell us the price of the Core i5 2500K CPU and Corsair 650TX V2 Power supply in China.

Also, on a side not, what do you think is a fair asking price for my rig? $500?

The regular prices in China and Canada/US are similar but China doesn't have any sales on computer parts. Would this be considered a price check? Well, I didn't realize that I was breaking a rule with that one.

I will be in Canada from August 17-September 3 and California from September 3- September 17.

I've already checked the prices and they are not cheaper in China, even online running on average $10 over regular price.

Basically I want to know where people would recommend me to buy computer parts in California if I will be there for two weeks.

Answer these questions so we can help you assemble your new build. For question 8, please indicate whether you prefer to build your system in Canada or California.

Price checks for older systems aren't allowed here. Besides, if you were a good son, you'd give your old build to your parents. Or, if you were a smart kid, you'd ask for a quid pro quo.

No. I was talking about you trying to get a price check for your old rig. That is against the rules.

I didn't say parts in China were cheaper. I meant that the parts in China cost roughly the same, probably a few $ more than parts being bought in California due to California sales tax.

Unfortunately, any sales you see in the U.S will be mostly negated since you're buying in California due to the above average sales tax we have. So when comparing prices from Newegg, Fry's or Microcenter, you're gonna have to add 9% to 10.8% (depending on which part of Southern California you're buying from) of that price on top of what you're already paying for. So a $60 part here in California is gonna be $66 total with the 10% sales tax.

Yeah don't bother answering the sticky: Unfortunately whatever build list we come up with this month is barely recommended a month from now let alone 3-4 months from now. A lot of hardware changes can happen in 3-4 months man. Especially since AMD's Bulldozer CPUs are due out during that time period.

So if you really want up to date advice, then ask again in August or September. ZERO point in setting up a build list right now.

If you know someone who has Amazon Prime, then definitely Amazon.com since they do not charge sales tax in California. If you don't know anyone with Amazon Prime and really want to buy parts here in the U.S when they cost almost the same as China, then your best bet would be either Microcenter or Fry's since you can return and replace parts quickly.

Thanks for the advice, prices are similar in China, IF you buy from private sellers in taobao (Chinese ebay) in which case service is not reliable. Example: I have a Microsoft natural ergonomic 4000 keyboard that had some keys stop working. In China they want me to mail it to them and get it repaired. In Canada they just send me a knew one.
