Im trying to help my friend solve a issue. He just put together a new system.

anyway specs as follows
Aerocool ExtremEngine 3T case

Amd 5000+ x2 black zeromtherm 120cm cooler
asus M2N32SLI Deluxe
bfg 650watt sli psu
2 1 gig kingston 5300 ddr2
80 gb sata hd
evga 7800gt
sata dvdrom
zeromtherm 120cm cooler
win xp

we had a issue on boot up, trying to solve what it is now. first it would beep once fans spin 1 second or so and nothing. remove the video card it would run fine. so we thought maybe try another video card, we did same result. i had another friend look at it, he moved the ram and it booted this time, but he unplugged the case fans. however we thought it was the ram. plug the fans in, and it wont boot. unplug them and it boots, i think both case fans are 2pins in a 4 pin molex housing. From what it looks the fan control knobs and the case fan are the only issue. If the are plugged in no boot,Im trying to figure it out, I could try another psu, but i dont see how power can be the issue with the minimum hardware in the machine, any idea on what to doublecheck or try would be great. thanks in advance.

the mobo is mounted flat in the case, not on the supplied posts that come with the mobo. there was not enough for a even setting. could this be causing a short somehow with a improper ground? that was my guess, but my friend does not not wanna take it back out.

Motherboards don't come with "posts," cases do. If you're not using the standoffs, there's definitely a short somewhere. To help illustrate what I'm talking about, here's a link:

Also, that BFG PSU isn't the greatest of quality, so you might want to try another PSU if you still experience problems.

my bad, he opened everything up and had it on the table, been awhile since i built one and forgot what came with what. however i paid attention when they decided to mount it on the metal alone, but they shot me down so i said do what you want. I always called them a post, like a fence post, anyway. His mobo tray is fixed. with some hills on it, like a natural standoff but stamped in the metal.
its screwed into the raised part, which im not sure doubles as a built in stand off, all the screw in ones were not used. so it rests on those 6 screws, and the 4 little mounds you see in the pic. so its not flat like some mobo trays, its a little flimsy though since they did not use the others at all.

he got it running fine without using the fans, but i figure he should be able to use everything. since its there.

Yah, those hills are built-in standoffs, but he may need better support, so he really should've listened to you and used the additional standoffs that came with the case, wherever there's a hole in the mobo but no matching built-in standoff.

If plugging in the fans prevents the system from POSTing, then there's either a short in one of the fan's wiring, or the PSU just isn't strong enough to power those fans.

im going to look at his wiring to see if one of the case wires is on the wrong pin or something. i had a issue with no booting like that years ago. I do have another psu that i could try in that system. One i bought for myself since it was at a killer price, yet have no new system to pair it with. If the issue goes away i figure its the psu, and if its still there something else. I asked someone, but if the power wires from the fan are crossed could that cause the issue, it would run with both fans if the video card was not installed, but the minute you have the video card and the fans plugged in, nothing. They are low rpm fans, i cannot see them drawing that much power, even for a 500watt psu or slower there should be ample power at that watts even with fluctuating power, im just guessing at that since he loaded windows and been playing WOW on it for hours with no issues.

feed it a donut via the rom drive, if it doesnt power on to open, use the EMERGENCY eject system. gonna need a high density paperclip to initiate the operation, but typically i find that most problems with pc's can be fixed with a nice glazed donut. if you are really having serious problems though, might want to try the boston cream / eclair combo.

If you're going to take it out of the case to remount the mobo anyway, I would suggest you try running it out of the case with the bare essentials (cpu, 1 stick of Ram, video card) and see if it will boot that way. You can try with/without fans, which should determine if there is a PSU issue.

ive got a spare fan somewhere, i think he has one to. was gonna try it and see if the same problem happens. Im guessing it will, i think the odds of 2 fans being wired wrong are slim. if it gets taken out i think ill have him try it out of the case to see what happens.

I would feed it a donut, but its a diabetic and all operations would cease.

thx for the ideas

rofl. gl. i think the chances are slim, too; and i'd be surprised if the spare fans work, lol, despite the bad rating of the psu by jg.
