new build need help with memory

hi, im kinda new here and have a dilemma. im about to buy a new system prolly in the next couple of days and dunno what memory to get for my new rig.
system specs:

Evga 680i
Evga 8800 Gts 640 Superclocked
E6600
Corsair HX620
Antec 900
Zalman 9700 NT
HDD's (already have)
Viewsonic Vx2025wm 20.1" 1680*1050 (have it)

i was looking at the corsair dominators ddr2-800 but ive been hearing some good stuff about the much cheaper buffalo firestix. im planning on doing a mild overclock prolly to 3ghz. are these modules overkill? or will they do fine? i really like the dominators and they fit in my budget but would the firestix be better for my OC? or are there better choices out there?

oh and i know this is off topic but would the 8800 gts 640mb be good enough for my res and be future proof (dx10 games)?

with the higher cpu mulitplier of 9 of the 6600 any decent PC6400 memory will get you 3 GHz. Actually with a 9 mulitplier and 1:1 memory divider you will be underclocking your memory. 3GHz / 9 = 333.3 MHz FSB so memory with the recomended 1:1 mulitplier will run at 2x FSB = 666MHZ way under its 800MHz rating.

Might I suggest to you a perfect sweet spot would be to drop the cpu mulitplier to 8 and run a FSB of 400MHz , this will put your cpu at 3.2GHz and your memory exactly on spec running 2 x 400 = 800.

per above you are not going to be overclocking ANY PC6400 memroy at ALL, unless you change your OC goal beyond 9x400 = 3.6GHz which starts to get you into the high end cooling area. 3.2 is a nice spot and will be a little much for the stock cooler (3.0 might be too) but will not require any super duper cooler. So some perceived or actual abiltiy of some brand of memory to OC to some frequency is not going to matter a rats ass when all is said and done.

I recommend you go with quality and good support and warranty. Other than that its not going to matter much if at all.


I like Corsair because it has never failed me.and I build a lot of machines. I have not tired the others but lots here say they pretty good at overclocking, which is good I guess if you need to OC. Actually my Corsair (see sig) did pretty well as I have a cpu with a low mulitpler and had to push stuff hard to get into the range your 6600 will just waltz into.

there is no better card than a 8800GTS at the present time.

I dont have your board, it would probally be a good idea to check evga website and the support forums for issues about that board and memory hmm there is a memory support sticky, good place to start.....

thx a bunch. so at 3.2ghz i can run my memory at 1:1. ok good. oh and i must have overlooked something on that mobo. it says its ddr2 standard is 1200 will i still be able to run the dominators at 800? or do i have to buy ddr2-1200 memory?
i would really like to get the "AR" or "A1" version of the mobo for its lifetime warranty and extras in the bundle.
