sorry for posting a new thread with out doing a lot of research on my own but im really out of touch with technology with school + work eatting up most of my life over the past 4 months. i want to build a new pc in the next month or two...ill answer some questions about my build:

-- What your budget is: ideally ~$600. thats WITHOUT a monitor. the monitor will be paid for as a gift.
-- Which parts you need within that budget: everything except the monitor
-- What the system is going to be used for: mild gaming such as L4D, CS...but mostly school work such as 3d modeling/rendering programs like SolidWorks and graphics software like Photoshop
-- Which components you are considering getting (list out your components with model numbers/names along with links to the stores you're getting them from): AMD or Intel...nVidia or ATi. i dont really care as long as it works and works well

like i said...ideal price is around $600. im willing to go to $700 if need be, but really want to stay at $600. i figure having the monitor as a gift should help lower the cost.

i also need suggestions on a good monitor >.< ideally >19 inches

$190-Q6600
$100- Gigabyte P45
$65- 7200.11 500gb Seagate Barracuda HD
$25- Optical Drive
$45- CM 330 Case
$115- 9800gt
$40- 2x2gb ddr2 800mhz Ram
= $580

this does not include a power supply. not really sure what budget ps is good for this right now. thinking some antec might do..

you can always drop down the q6600 to like a e7200 and then oc if needed. you can oc the q6600 as well.. xigmatec s1283 cooler and xigmatec retention bracket if u plan to oc.

cases are really up to the builder's likes. other "cheap" cases that id look at are antec 300, cm 590, cm 690.

Here's what I recommend (FS = Free shipping):
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU - $190 FS
MSI Neo3-F Intel P43 Motherboard - $85
G.Skill F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ 2 x 2GB DDR2 800 RAM - $40 FS
Western Digital WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $75 FS
Samsung SH-222F 22X DVD±R SATA DVD Burner - $25 FS
Cooler Master RC-590-KKN1-GP ATX Case - $60 FS
Corsair 400CX 400W PSU - $55 FS
XFX PVT96OSDFH 9600GSO 768MB PCI-E Video Card - $78 FS
-----
Total: $608 plus tax and shipping

The quad-core Q6600 should help out a lot with photoshop and the 3D modeling/rendering apps you use. The 9600GSO 768MB is a good choice for light/mild gaming.

Monitor wise, I recommend getting this 22" monitor since it's close to the same price as 19" monitors:
Hanns·G Hi-221DPB Black 22" DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor - $159
