New build help needed

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

I would like to keep it less than $1500 or so w/o tax and shipping, but this is negotiable

3) Where do you live?

Southern California - inland empire

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

I have an ASUS 1920x1080 monitor, EVGA gtx460 graphics card, liteon dvd drive, samsung (i think) hard drive

6) Will you be overclocking?

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?

i think its 22" or 24"

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

within a week or so

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.

6Gb SATA would be nice, USB 3 would be cool too. I really just need a MOBO that is rock solid, something that will definitely last a while.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

I have win7 64 bit already.

...the 650D on newegg (where I wanted to order everything from) is deactivated. Does this have anything to do with the Tsunami? Also I like to run a lot of stuff at once (my old computer would slow to a crawl when I would have visual studio, udk, photoshop, adobe flash and a web browser open at once) so I was thinking 12-16GB of ram. Anyways help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Considering your resolution and if you want higher settings, you're looking at a new video card here.

...the 650D on newegg (where I wanted to order everything from) is deactivated.

Not a good idea: Buy as many parts as possible from Amazon.com since they do not charge CA residents tax whereas Newegg does. Not to mention free shipping on a lot of parts from Amazon.com. We've been able to shave off $100 to $300 off a California build by buying parts from Amazon.com.

Does this have anything to do with the Tsunami?

I'm not gonna touch this one.


Anyway, I'm coming back in the afternoon with a build if no one else has come up with one then. It's close to 4:30 AM so sleep time now.

Just for common knowledge you can find a little bit more about Corsair at their website.

Personally I've always loved Corsair's products so spending 2 ~ 5 minutes to read about them was cool. I have 4GB of RAM from them but yet it runs and feels like much more.

How heavily will you be using Photoshop? Will it be for profit/work or just as a hobby? If it's the primary purpose of the build (which I'm assuming it isn't) then the build could be completely different.

If you are going heavy Photoshop do you use/or are planning to use CS5?

The reason for asking is because if you plan on using Adobe CS5 or future versions of Adobe, you'll want to upgrade to a better Nvidia card as Adobe software takes advantage of Nvidia's CUDA tech.

Also could you give the specs of your

samsung (i think) hard drive

An SSD could be a huge upgrade, especially with a $1500 budget.

Yes the 570 is a big upgrade over the 460. Yes the 750W PSU listed above will be enough.

If Photoshop is just a hobby and will remain so, then I wouldn't go with the GTX 570 then. I recommend the HD 6950 1GB card then:

I only have 1 more question. The RAM that was linked did not have heat spreaders. It gets really hot in southern CA in the summer and I was wondering if this is a big issue or not. I was also going to use the retail heatsink for the CPU and that would be sufficient, but honestly I dont know what the limits are for RAM in this heat.

I live in SoCal too: Those heat spreaders aren't really needed unless you have spectacularly shitty cooling in your case. I've had/have RAM with no heatspreaders running for years now in hot and sunny SoCal.

With that said, a 3rd party HSF might be a good idea especially with the heat wave hitting us now:
